I've watched thousands of videos on workflow, project management, personal knowledge management systems plus software, tablets, and e-ink devices (etc) trying to get a sense of control over my work without much lasting success. THIS is the insight I needed and I'm looking forward to the rest of this series.

More seriously, this guy with his bullet journal method has changed the life of a lot more people than he might think. There might be thousands of people in the future that may change and act locally because of what he did. He is obviously not the first but he made it accessible for the mass at the age of internet. People will change their life follow their goal and improve the life of others because of his contribution.

Love this! As a fellow product designer I constantly come across situations where people complicate their processes by adding in technology and unnecessary structure where it can be done manually in a moment, and vice versa - stubbornly rejecting optimization where it can decrease friction and time for maintenance. As for the devices - I deliberately don't install any entertainment or social media apps, or messengers on my iPad. It's reserved for studying and illustration mainly. It also gives this connection and context - once you're on iPad - it's study time. No context switching, no distractions. Looking forward to the other videos!

Wow, 😮 thank you for taking the time to make this video. I work in the tech world, and I had noticed my life and memories seemed more blurry than when I was a child. I believed tech to be some of the issue and as a Christian I have noticed an equal unhealthy relationship with consumerism. Hard does not always equal bad, slow doesn’t always equal inefficiency, and less with gratitude is better than plenty with strife (proverbs 17:1).

This is where I love your work Ryder. Your ability to sit and think on a subject, with discernment. As the years have passed, you haven’t become ideologically biased towards Luditism, as so many have, in order to create content. It’s a continuation of your philosophy of mindfulness, and intention. Great video and why I consider you the more zen version of Cal Newports message ( both understanding the need for deep work and computing discernment )

This presentation hits exactly to the point. The programmers that are developing AI based apps and a lot of other modern tech platforms seem like kids in a candy store." We can do it there for we should". I want to thank you Ryder for putting this to words. We really need more folks voicing the perspective of care and some caution. Well said!

This is such a great video that it hit me on an emotional level. How much technology do we really need to make us happy? You've perfectly encapsulated many of the ideas I've been struggeling with recently that I didn't know how to precisely put into words. Thank you!

I used to work in IT and over the past few years i find i am increasingly frustrated with tech. I do more and more tasks without tech or with reduced tech. We've gotten to a point where we dont question the tech. We have it to have it, and where it once was supposed to make things easier, it now can make things more difficult. We seem to want things to be overly complicated, ignoring the simple solutions.

a friend introduced me to a Bullet Journal system and as a person who loves to write and mind map it made it so much more Interesting to me. I Came across your book as well and picked it up. Its much more than just a Book on Bullet Journaling. It was one of the easier reads for me this year I finished it (and took notes personal book reports). I enjoyed the book very much and enjoy the videos just as much. Reading has always been one of my harder things to do, to sit and not be distracted, but active reading and finding books that interest me and dedicating time to reading has become a silent pleasure for myself. Loved the Book, love the Bullet Journal System and thank you very much for the Content on here as well.

I have a boox note air 3c. I use it as my bullet journal, ereader, sketchbook, and I listen to audiobooks on it. It writes much more comfortably than pen and paper and it takes up less space. I have a hand injury so journaling had become difficult for me the eink tablet in color with a great pen and writing tech has changed the way I use a bullet journal. I even long form journal now. It's really been the best of both worlds for me. Our technology has advanced enough that I can carry 1000 books with me and several journals and a sketchbook in one form fitting object. I even decorate my journals now with images that I didn't have to have the space to store before. The boox note air 3c is one of the best color eink tablets on the market that has built in software that doesn't require a subscription to a app to use.

Omg you are great at what I’m thinking and been able to explain exactly what I feel, and understand with tech that was meant to give us free time and improve human intelligence. Eg. In satnav we lose the use of our ability to homing pigeons of routes, reading signage, remembering buildings etc I use the Goldilock analogy in everything too! Find that balance is just so hard and time is so precious.

At the same time, interesting to see the choice of the “3 devices” that you chose…because all three of them have seen a sudden spike in interest and also marketing push, in the last 3 to 6 months. It will be interesting to see your unbiased view of them in the context of “conscious computing”, especially when so many KZbinrs have been raving about these products the last several weeks and months and many of those have been sponsored by those companies.

I currently use the reMarkable 2 tablet to write my yoga flows (stick figures). I like the ability to move part of a sequence to another part of the page. Even though I could duplicate an existing flow. I always start from scratch to make the flow new for me and my students. It's like writing on paper but it's forgiving when I want to move things around or erase parts. I'm looking forward to hearing your review on this.

This is why I am concerned about people speeding up KZbin videos. We won't be able to stand people talking at a normal rate of speech. We will retreat even more into tech. Are we going to start telling people to record themselves so that we can listen to them sped up? Or avoid them all together?
@NinaKatharinaWeber
@NinaKatharinaWeber 4 ай бұрын
Yes and no on the „speeding up“. We were taught at university (linguistics), that humans speak at very different speeds - and only consider their own speed „normal“. I used to click away from a lot of videos and podcasts because the slow speech was driving me nuts. Speeding up to 1,2x still sounds normal but helps me keep my focus with slower speakers. It‘s especially helpful for many people with adhd, to keep their brain engaged.

I know that stuff... I am just saying we are on a slippery slope right now. In the past, people had to just learn to live with people that spoke slower. Now we don't have to do that. We can tailor everything to our liking which will mean we will be less tolerant. In the case of adhd, people won't have to develop skills they might have been able to develop with practice. They'll just get a crutch.

You mentioned about at 14:00 that you fed your own material to an AI to produce a newsletter for you. This kind of AI seems like it would be useful. Do you recommend an AI engine. Don't want one that is so broad that it fowls up or takes over or uses our product to benefit its database and others.

You misunderstand digital minimalism. Cal Newport's own definition: Digital minimalism is a philosophy that helps you question what digital communication tools (and behaviors surrounding these tools) add the most value to your life. It is motivated by the belief that intentionally and aggressively clearing away low-value digital noise, and optimizing your use of the tools that really matter, can significantly improve your life.

Remarkable Paper Pro came yesterday. What is your opinion on this kind of e-ink notebook? I'm choosing between Remarkable and a Caran d'Ache Fountain Pen to start journaling or maybe BuJo. On one side, I am a tech geek. On the other side I have so called digital cognitive overload. That is why I think, although I like new tech, I will choose a fountain pen with a paper notebook. To ease my mind and relief stress. What do you think Ryder?
