I was just in Mexico City this past August, hung out with someone who lives there, and she said in no uncertain terms to avoid the taxis. Supposedly the cartels and gangs work with them a lot, they are involved in Human trafficking.

When I went in 2017, I traveled entirely by bus and subway. Apple and Google maps can tell you exactly what lines go where and where they stop. Just search using public transport. And yes, pay close attention when using public transport in any city, because while it's mostly safe, there's always a chance you're caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Yup there are pick pockets both in metro and metrobus, they will stand around you and push you on the stops so that one of them can take your phone or wallet out. I don't use neither lately but what I do (as a guy) if I need to use them is that I put both wallet and phone in the same pocket and grab them both with one hand, the other hand is to hold to the tubes. Or if possible just don't get in if it's too full.

This was a good review, one of the more realistic ones without rose-colored glasses or agendas. CDMX was great, I visited in March for 6 days with my wife & kids (14 & 11) from Houston, TX. We stayed between Polanco & Chapultepec. No issues there, but the vibe in that area changes dramatically after sunset. In broad daylight, two drunks in Alameda Park were shoving each other & yelling (in Spanish & English) near us, with big dogs barking in front of police who just stood by them, though it stopped pretty fast. And the airport (landside, by the entrances) was a bit sketchy with people loitering & sleeping on the floors. Otherwise all was good-- it was a great trip and we look forward to going back. It's an easy 2 hour flight from here, but is sadly overlooked due to certain politicians and "news".

Hola Toms 🙌 Awww, thank you so much! We always love sharing our personal opinions without sugarcoating things. The city truly transforms into a different world when it's dark. Love your videos! 1. The police in CDMX do nothing. I've regularly walked past groups of people shooting up drugs, smoking marijuana, etc. and cops will be standing right there ignoring it all. 2. It's not that bad here in July in my opinion. It rains in the evening/night mostly, so just wear rain booties and bring an umbrella with you. 3. We really enjoy staying in Coyoacan--for more peace and charm--or the area between Centro and Roma--easy walkability to both popular areas. 4. Definitely agree about not going past Garibaldi. I even know people who've gotten robbed or assaulted AT Garibaldi Plaza, so we just avoid it altogether. 5. I got such bad food poisoning here before that I ended up in the ER due to extreme hydration. Things I've learned to avoid with street food (I still eat it sometimes): there's no make-shift sink, the veggies are washed in tap water or not washed at all, the stand looks dirty, food that should be cold is sitting out all day, the employees are touching their phone or money constantly without gloves or washing hands.

Hola Bailey 🤗 First and foremost, thank you for watching, and commenting, really pushes our video to more people and helps us grow our channel. So, do you live in CDMX? that's cool 1. We saw something like this at the Estela de Luz (I think is the name of the tower right at the entrance of Chapultepec in front of BVVA Bank Offices) but we asked and seems to be a protest for legalisation so the police could not do anything, but we just got the info from one person 🤭. 2. Maybe the flooding is just in particular parts of the city, we suppose. 3. Yeah, we liked being at Roma Sur, we felt very safe and we were walking most of the time, we enjoyed the area. 4. Really, we like Garibaldi for the mariachi, but we were in the afternoon, but we did not feel pretty safe 🤭. 5. Great point, yeah, unfortunately, these bad hygiene practices are quite part of the culture, which sucks, because can make people very sick, is hardly seen a food stand with decent food handle practices, I (Geo) grew up eating street food, but this hasn't made me immune of not getting sick; as what happened to me at Xochimilco 😂😅. Thank you again for watching Bailey, we hope you are doing amazing, sending you great vibes from PDC 🌊 🇲🇽

We just returned from Mexico City and I wanted to share this lesson learned. After our day in the central historic district, we took a pink taxi parked in the street. We were charged 600 pesos in a typical 80 to 100 pesos ride. Looking back, there were many signs that tells us DON’T take this taxi but we didn’t listen to…Lesson Learned: Never use pink taxi can but use Uber instead for safety. The pink taxi cab we took is an old beat up car. The taxi does not have any identification displayed in the taxi. The taxi meter was not visibility seen. The meter was placed on his side (driver’s side) tucked deep down on the left dashboard and it was faced down. When we shared this to our hotel staff, he said that it was a good thing that we do not argued for we do not know how the driver would react. I am sharing this experience to avoid getting similar experience. Best to use Uber for transportation for SAFETY reasons. Mexico City is a beautiful city and has lots of amazing places to explore. Enjoy exploring and be safe!! Peace 😊❤

*Hola amig@,* Thank you for sharing your experience. It's always helpful to read insights from other travellers that can assist people when visiting CDMX or any other destination. On our most recent trip to Mexico City, which was a year after the video was taken, we encountered a situation. We had booked an Uber to take us to the airport, but due to a taxi strike, the Uber driver was unable to drop us off at our intended destination, which was CDMX airport. Since we had luggage and couldn't walk long distances, we decided to take one of the pink taxis. We placed our luggage in the trunk and closed it. However, we soon realized that the car didn't have license plates and was actually covered in plastic. Immediately, we asked the driver to open the trunk, and luckily, we retrieved our bags. However, in 99% of cases, these taxis are unregulated (illegal). Thank you for watching and sharing your experience. 🙏

Great video! Love CDMX! What helps me to avoid "Montezuma's Revenge" is to take 1-2 pepto tablets every morning. That way, when I am exposed to bacteria - and I will be - my stomach will be protected and the likelihood of getting sick is fairly slim. "Mexico City is both wonderful and dangerous city." 1.Dont take a taxi, maybe be Uber. 2.Dont ask directions. May be to the police. Metro bus or metro station(subway station) is the cheapest and relatively safest transportation. The historic center of MC is best to stay because most beautiful things are concentrated there. July is the rainest and the hottest season in MC like Ethiopia.

Hola Gebru 👋👋 Thank you for watching and sharing your insights with all of us 🙏. We did take taxi only once and was with a friend other than that we opt for Uber. Police has been always helpful when asking for directions or information at least in our personal opinion. We've used more metro than any other public transportation during our travels, most of the metro stations and wagons are clean, and we felt safe pretty much al the time. We actually stayed in Alameda area, which we do not know if it's considered the historic center, but we really really liked the area, very close to Palacio de Bellas Artes 🤩.

I have been wanting to visit Mexico City for years, and I really enjoyed your video. My biggest safety concern is actually water - what would you recommend to foreigner (who REALLY does not want his trip ruined by Montezuma's Revenge, and therefore will probably avoid 'street food') as far as safe drinking water? I am assuming it would be bottled water, but is there any brand you prefer? Is it all basically the same? Thank you for your video!
@ForTheRoadTravels
@ForTheRoadTravels 10 ай бұрын
Hola Tom! 👋 If your main concern is drinking water, I highly recommend only buying purified water, which is available everywhere. There are convenience stores called Oxxo almost everywhere, where you can purchase 1 or 2-liter bottles, and even 5 and 10-liter options. However, never drink directly from the faucet. You can try either Ciel or Bonafont, as these are the most common brands. Additionally, you can consider the Gerber brand, which is typically sold in pharmacies and is mainly for babies. Thank you for watching and for your comments! 🙏🫶

Howzit Brian 🤗🇿🇦 That's awesome - I love to hear that more and more Saffas are travelling to Mexico, the culture is warm and friendly like it is back home 🫶 Well, it really depends on how much of a city person you are - if you love cities, I'd plan two weeks in CDMX. But if you really want to see other parts of Mexico, a good seven days in CDMX should give you enough time to see a lot of the major things like Chapultapec, Xochimilco, Centro Historico etc. I hope you have the most wonderful time here 🥰🇲🇽🫶

Hola amigos 🤗🤗, Awww thank you so much, these were the things that helped us in our CDMX trip 🤭. Exactly, Mexico City has been stereotyped as being very very dangerous, but you just need to be aware of your surroundings, and of course there are some areas you should not visit, but other than that it's an incredible city. Yeah, we actually had those releasable cable ties, when we move to Mexico to tie Ted's kennel as requirement from the airline, and now we have used them for our trips, they're always in our backpacks. We hope you guys are enjoying Mexico, we miss you and we hope to see you guys again 🥰🤗🤩

It's a whole world of its own!! I always stay in Centro Historico--right off the Zocalo & have walked around on my own at night!! That said, I'm aware of my surroundings & avoid streets / areas with nobody around. And I love the street food!! I'm curious about the zip cable ties... You called them releasable?-- I only know them as requiring being cut to be removed? I rewound the video several times to try to see how you were using them but it was too short & fast. We highly recommend choosing either the ADO or ETN bus companies, as they have a longstanding presence in the market. I lived in Mexico City in the late 80’s and was told by locals if ever pulled over by the cops to offer to buy them “a couple of cokes”. This was code for negotiating your infraction. In Mexico you are guilty until found innocent. Always offer a bride if the cops tell you they want to take you into the station.

*Hola amig@* Unfortunately is a reality of the country, and sometimes they just stopped you to see what they can take from you, without committing any offense. We now heard that are ways to report any corrupt cop via an app, and is not beneficial for them to take people to the station, gets more complicated to "get" something out of you. Well, luckily we have never experienced but we share what other tourists, travelers, and locals recommend based on their real-life situations. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment amigo

I'm 76 and frequently go to Mexico City/ Over the past 10 years two attempts by pickpockets on buses. I broke the thumbs of both. I enjoy criminals thinking me an easy target. I served 32 years in the US Army and was a Colonel 0-6. But that is their mistake. I have practiced martial arts from age 9. I currently practice Muay Thai, Tai Chi Shoalin and Dim Mak. My blow with either hand is still in excess of 850 ft pounds. But stay away from drugs alcohol and prostitutes you won't encounter many problems. But should add I have complete confidence in any environment and a great sense in avoiding dangers. Certainly a lot safer than anywhere in the US where both criminals and police compete as threats to your well being.

@@riskyron1416 Well first off, I didn't ask if you were Mexican. I wasn't even talking to you. I said if one was a citizen which is different, but I realize you are getting quite old now, so I will type slowly, LOL. The only sentence meant for you was the very first one. But let's act like I was talking to you. Just because you served in the US Army doesn't mean you haven't embraced a retired status as a citizen of another country as I have. I too had expatriate status in multiple countries prior but obviously you don't understand any nuance or lifestyle other than your own. So why do you choose to be a jerk in your response? Oh I know. You didn't like me calling you a braggart. Most people that learn martial arts are pretty chill but not you. Just because you haven't been arrested doesn't mean you are doing a good thing. It just means you've been lucky vigilante. Others are best to heed my advice which is who my comments were meant for anyways. I know you'll need to respond to this because your ego requires it. Self-absorbed, which is why you misinterpreted who I was talking to in the first place. A lack of control from a very likely control freak. I am quite sure you have the inability let things go even when there is nothing left to be said. Goes to show age has little to do with maturity.

You're right to be concerned. Its beyond me why channels like this promote this country knowing good and well that it is not safe. Who wants to be on constant guard for corrupt police officers, being scammed by locals at every turn, restaurants, taxis. Stop PATRONIZING a country that does not value you. Yes there is crime everywhere but it is tenfold in Mexico. The only way change will happen is to bring tourism to a halt. Then they will perhaps see that if they stop killing, kidnapping, robbing and scamming visitors we may come back.

Lol, not all of us have the privilege of being born into a ‘safe’ country. I’m assuming you’re coming from a developed country? I come from a country that is ACTUALLY dangerous- like one of the highest murder/rape stats in the world. So for me,when people call Mexico unsafe, I can’t help but think how out of touch with reality they are. In the last three years I’ve lived here, I’ve throughly enjoyed being able to walk the streets at night and live in a home with minimal security- far different from my upbringing in South Africa 🇲🇽 If you’re so concerned with Mexico being unsafe, simply don’t visit.
@DebeNicole
@DebeNicole Жыл бұрын
@@ForTheRoadTravels you are missing the point. People are looking to get away from the crime of their own country and choose Mexico only to be faced with more crime and daily scamming. Not everyone is going to encounter the violent crimes that take place but you always have to be on guard for the basic everyday things, taking a taxi, withdrawing money from an ATM, eating in a restaurant...easy to say just don't visit. How about just fix it!

I give police near my hotel bottled water, soft drinks and sometimes buy them lunch. The result is they will stop traffic for me no matter what the light is. They are always appreciative. Try the electric assist peddle taxis. Half the price, they can also go where cars cannot. Of course with my age the buses are free. Once on a bus the driver would not let me exit the front door. So I made like a bulldozer and shoved 12 people out the rear door, but allowed a woman out ahead that was having the same problem exiting.

Wish you had done this video before we went 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 we went to Tepito and we stayed at a hotel in Garibaldi. 🤣🤣🤣 Garibaldi wasn’t to bad as it seems. People just want to sing and have a good time there. It was a very unique experience. Tepito only in Sunday with the Tianguis and you always stay in the middle isle. Never go to the edge where house entrances are. At least that’s what I was told. It’s funny I was with Daria who you know is guerita. It was a very scary experience at first because you feel like you might be targeted more. But actually we had an amazing experience. But I won’t go to Tepito again 2x was enough 🤣🤣🤣 oh and got a good deal on shoes and clothes. Turibus is the best. We did the 5 day one. It was the best.

Hola Frank and Daria, Exactly, I (Geo) visited Tepito with my parents when I was 9 or 10 years old, and was such an experience, but I had always that in my mind that if you go to Tepito you should be very careful, next trip to CDMX I'll take to Simone to the Tianguis 🤭. Yeah, tourist are more susceptible to get targeted by some scammers, it really helps them (our wife's) being with a local, they get somehow local and price preference because of us 🤭🤭. To be honest, the 2 times we've been in CDMX we have never felt the need of renting a car, we think might be more stressful having a car, while touring the city, so that's why the Turibus is the greatest option. Thank you again for watching guys, sending you a big big hug to both of you 🤗🤗🤗
