How To Stay Warm Deer Hunting

Staying warm while you deer hunt is partly making sure that you are wearing quality clothing, as well as protecting your head, hands, feet core and base. Pac boots are a must to truly be comfortable in extreme cold , 30 plus years of late season hunting Mn, ND, Ontario, Sask. -10 to -25 degree air temp mornings plus rubber boots and your not going to last very long. You need to have a boot with a liner. Spent many below zero days sitting Dark to Dark , carry in your outer layer in a pack put it on in your stand. If you have a very long walk take your time , Ive carried in pac boots and walked in rubber but thats a PIA and a scent nightmare. Everything else was spot on IMO. Love your content, your small parcel info is way above anything else out there.

I came across your channel a year ago and have watched every video faithfully. After a ton of research and pondering, I recently "invested" in Sitka gear and I've gotta say...thanks for the great advice. Though the price tag was hard to swallow the stuff is amazing. The fact that it's designed for bow hunters makes it even better. Everything is super well thought out and designed for a specific purpose. I was always cold before Sitka...no longer. One thing most people overlook or disgard as a way to keep warm on stand is an old sleeping bag. If hunting ground blinds it can be left in your blind. In tree stands you can pull it up around your waist, even up to your chest and belt it. It can be left at your stand wrapped up in a heavy contractor's type trash bag to keep it dry. Obviously a camo bag is best if you have or can get your hands on one, in a ground blind it really doesn't matter. This is something I've only used in extremely cold situations, but it works. As far as the head goes...Mad Bomber hats literally laugh at the cold. They mock the cold. And i agree 100% with the tubes for hands. I've been using them religiously since the 90's. Absolutely love em'. My first base layer is a very thin wicking layer. Next is my miltary ECWG(Military Extreme Cold Weather Gear). Fleece layers after that under my outer bibs and parkas. I do wish i could afford to buy Sitka. But right now I can't, but the methods I use do keep me warm.

I would just like to add that when buying boots, buy 1 size larger than regular shoes because if you cram your feet into boots with wick and wool socks, plus the warmers....and theres no room to heat the air layers you're creating, you're hurting your ability to stay warm more than you're helping. I remember 2003 rut hunt in Minnesota. The radio: "today's high for Grand Rapids is -17" Had to break ice with an oar in the front of the boat in order to cross the lake. Shot three that day though!

Great information. I found that layering and sweat control is extremely important. I start out in almost my base layer when I get out of the truck. I will try to get my temp up by turning the heat up n the truck until I’m ready to go. That should keep me warm during the walk out to the spot. Add clothes when you start getting cold. The MOST important is to remove a layer once you start to sweat. Once you start to sweat it can be almost impossible to stay warm when you finally get to the stand.

Love my lacrosse alphaburly boots. This is my 3rd year and they are still going strong. I condition them twice a year. I hunt the Louisiana swamps and Illinois hardwoods.

In my opinion the Lacrosse Aerohead Sport 7MM boot is hands down the warmest boot I’ve seen! The way the boot is made is incredible. I wear a thin moisture wicking base sock, then put on my base layer thermals over that sock, then put my calf high thick cotton sock over that, then my all cotton sweat pants over that sock. Then my Camo pant last, cuff the pant leg over and tuck the whole mess down in that 7MM Lacrosse boot and reach back and cinch that strap down snug, & I don’t care how cold it is outside your toes will stay nice and warm. Make sure you get the 7MM, they do have a thinner 3.5MM one in the Aerohead. The boot is well worth the $200-300!! Found mine on Amazon for $175, that’s a steal! Most important, I keep my hunting boots on a boot warmer at all times during the hunting season expect when they are on my feet. Sweat builds up inside the boot from walking, and if you keep your boots outside like most hunters do, it’s too cold out to dry out that moisture before your next hunt. Boot heaters are a must.

The one thing I will say when it comes to your feet is that you have to be careful with the warmers or extra thick socks. It is all about balancing the warmth. "IF YOUR FEET SWEAT" you're going to cause your feet to freeze faster. I actually went with a lighter sock, and that made a big difference. They also make heated Vest now too that work wonders.

Great episode Jeff! Always look forward to see what you've posted when I wake up at these late hours to work. Its great working from home. Anyways, even though I dont own a single piece of Sitka gear I know people who do and swear by it over and over again. For those who cannot afford it or just cant justify the investment, dont overlook Cabela's Brand Clothing. It may not be as warm as Sitka but if you can keep your hands, feet, and core warm you wont be disappointed. Here's my trick for staying warm. I first start with my feet. Moisture wicking socks, followed by a pair of wool or mock wool socks, followed by a high quality boot with removable liners. On colder days I slide a pair of Hot Hands Toe Warmers into the toe warmer pockets of my boot liners. Keeps feet toasty all day. Second I wear 2 pairs of base layer pants followed by insulated jeans (if its bitter cold). Then, depending on the chill factor, I will wear 2-3 base layer shirts, if its warm I cut it down to 1 or 2. Then Ill add my Cabela's brand weather proof bibs. Then Ill wear an off brand (Trails Crest) synthetic wool jacket that's usually all I need unless its bitter cold like 20F or lower, then Ill add my insulated Cabela's jacket. From there I wear wool gloves, and a fleece hat and sometimes through a face mask into the mix as well. But keeping your feet, core and hands warm are critical if you want to enjoy your hunts. If you're getting cold feet and have tried multiple pair of boots such as me and still get cold feet, get the Cabela's Trans Alaska Pac Boot. They weigh just over 5lbs for the pair, but are the warmest boots I have ever owned. They run about 200.00 a pair but you wont be sorry. Remember there are alternatives to Sitka out there, they may not be as high quality as Sitka but they do what they need to do and thats keep you warm, quiet and comfortable. Like Jeff said, your hunting clothes should be an investment and should last you a very long time. You get what you pay for. My Cabelas brand clothes have lasted me a very long time and they still look like new.

Thank you, Jeff! I just discovered Sitka thanks to your video and was originally going to go with KUIU. I started hunting in 2016 and my gear is mix and match of store brands with different patterns. I didn’t have good luck with blinds for bow season on the public land. My goal is to get higher quality gear so i can hike further and sit longer. Your video gave me right tips. I have been wearing the same hunting clothes for around 20 years, not the best stuff, got tired of freezing, plus being 59, it gets harder to take, being on blood thinners, your cold all the time. Awesome video! I FREEZE all the time, makes hunting miserable, well, used to freeze. I bought the IWOM XT, it's like a sleeping bag with arms, but the bottom unzips and you can cinch it at your waist and just wear it like a jacket till you're in your stand. That thing is so warm, I wear just my regular warm weather hunting boots, random pair of socks, light gloves, it has a built-in kangaroo pouch for your hands, I stick one hand warmer in there, and literally, fear I'll fall asleep it's so comfortable! I use it in climber and my lone wolf hang on stand. Feet are toasty, and if they were to get too warm, just unzip the bottom and let some air in; it also keeps your scent contained in the suit. It also rolls into a self-contained pouch if you don't want to wear it in. I am going to invest in some wool and Sitka for next year, for when temps are cool, but not freezing. Foot warmers in a boot before a 3/4 mile walk I have, don’t care how cold, my 800 gram boots would have a puddle of sweat in the bottom and my feet would be cold. Great video keep it up!

No problem. Diabetes is nothing to mess around with. You just have to make sure you take care of yourself good. She unfortunately didn't keep it under control for a number of years which lead to her needing a kidney transplant. It was a very rough part of my life then because i was only 13 or 14 years old. I remember getting home from school and seeing her just lay there for hours very sick. Hopefully everything keeps working out good for you! I also appreciate all of the videos. Just starting doing some habitat improvements on my property here in mid Michigan.

I still have my dad's 40 year old wool-lined lumber jack checkered coat, which I wore for 10 years and still wear when the temps permit. I like my Sitka gear. My favorite is the Stratus Jacket and pants than the Fanatic Hoody. But I still got cold in the lower thirties to high 20's. Looking at getting the Celsius midi for insulation. I’ll be 51 this year...and staying warm gets harder every year. I did price some sitka...and i just couldnt do it...But I can always find slightly cheaper clothes and add the hand and foot warmers. Also bought some artic boot covers which really work great. The mitten flip gloves with the built in pocket for the hand warmers work perfect for me...and the same fanny type pack filled with hand warmers.

Jeff, i use a Northern Outfitters parka, insulated liner and bibs that Iditerod mushers wear only if i an sitting during firearm season as its too bulky for bow hunting. Never been cold -54 windchill,feet are another issue, toasty toes help untill my feet sweat then they are no good. I wear cotton gloves but carry fleece lined sheep skin mittens for my hands. Got lucky, found Northern outfitters outfit at a garage sale 20 bucks, over 600 retail!!!

Within my first two weeks of hunting and definitely glad for warm hunting clothes. Twice already I had to swap clothes to prevent developing hypothermia (temp below 30 before wind and lack of sunlight) I figure if I can’t use my hands, head, or body I can’t shoot my bow. When I originally looked at your table of clothes I thought that is a ton of money on clothes. I roughly calculated over $2,000 worth of clothing on your table. There is definitely a huge shock factor with Sitka clothing. I love the fact that you emphasized over and over that it is not for everyone because of price. You gave the 3 most important items bib, coat, and hoodie which equals around $800. Now that seems much more appealing and affordable FOR ME. The clothes will last longer than most people keep a bow which commonly outfitted is well over $1000. If your too cold to be out in the woods your bow doesn't matter. You gave the necessities to stay warm and the best of the best in your opinion of clothing. You have truly made me reconsider my clothing options. I live in Michigan and know about the cold. I traded my Swarovski for Vortex...a great WI based company! Crazy...I had lacrosse boots in the 80s when I didn't have enough money to buy them. Been shooting Mathews since I was 22 and had to rely on a sponsorship from MJC archery to be able to afford one. Purchased my first Swarovskis in the late 90s with a contract for shooting. Also Sitka of course with a sponsorship. It is amazing how dreams can be made when you work extremely hard at your passion...literally trying to work harder than anyone else in what you do. Starting with absolutely nothing...we live in an incredible country and I am truly blessed.

Boot blankets have been the best product for keeping me in the stand. I had some 2000gm insulated boots that still froze my feet. Now I wear the same uninsulated boots all year and just take my Arctic Shield boot blankets when it gets cold.

Last year, I used them in the late January bow season on the east side of Michigan when it was below 0 and with 20mph+ winds. Just threw a few hand warmers in them. First time ever that my feet were the last thing to get cold on my body. If you do buy some, order bigger then you think. XL fit over my size 9 neoprene rubber boots with a little room. XXL fit my friends size 12.

I like to use the stick on toe warmers vs the foot warmer. Super comfortable and doesn't allow for the friction that a foot warmer can cause. I like to scout hunt so its a must that friction is reduced to keep blistering down

New Upstate Ny Hunter here. Hunted the cold front yesterday ( to no avail). It was a brisk 14 degrees. Im new to this and haven't made the investment for really good gear yet. Still rocking the Wal-mart camo and Surplus Airforce Boots. Layer up and make due. My buddy brought a heater for the blind yesterday so we were toasty, but thats not always the case. Don't push it if your cold though...as an upstate Ny lifer I know cold very well. Its nothing to mess around with. Especially you folks in Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin and what not.

Great video Jeff, I was going to ask if you could do a video on layering and how you dress to stay warm in the stand. The Michigan gun season opener and week leading up to it was brutal. Definitely going to invest in better, higher quality clothing. What good is it to practice... do all the prep work and take time off work to hunt the rut if you can’t stay in the stand (because you get too cold). Thanks again!

If I could add to this video … merino wool is your Friend , scent lok make a heated vest that’s pretty awesome .. and I found jamming hand warmers in the toes of my boots keeps my feet warm. I also sowed pockets all over my base layers I can slide hand warmers into. Just some extra tips I’ve learned along my way of watching this guy … wind break material is vital as well

Agree on the clothing. Having to get a few pieces at a time. I need good recommendation on a warm pair of boots. My toes get freezing cold. Tried insole warmers but they don't last but a few hours

I bought an IWOM last year and they keep you warm. BUT BUT they are a different way to hunt. They're a little tricky in a stand. I hunted many days in 10-15 degree F. Long walk in wearing poly long leg underwear, jeans, T-shirt, sweat shirt, and nothing else. In addition I used arctic feet in the IWOM. They aren't cheap either. The weird thing is your body gets used to regulating heat in the IWOM and when you get out of it YOU GET COOOOOOOOOLD until you get really moving. Great Channel Jeff. Rally enjoy the content.

Heh... Cold. Been there. Was at base camp. Plan was for two weeks, first few days scouting in the mountains. Minus twenty F. Thermax. Gore-Tex. Wool. Long Johns. Liners. Multiple layers. Face masks, the whole kit and kaboodle. Day after day of blistering cold. Then one morning I woke up it was warm... ahhh sooo warm. Went outside in jeans, flip flops, a t-shirt. Sooo warm. Made breakfast. Sipped on some coffee, looking over the map and considering the current state of the plan for opening day and turned on the radio for the weather report. Plus Twenty Degrees F! I laughed and laughed. Twenty degrees and I was bare foot and wearing a T-Shirt, comfortable as can be. My body had adjusted. Never made it to opening day though. Night before the sun was setting to the south, at nine pm. WTF? Turned on the radio, caught the news. Fire. They were abandoning the ridge, fire was sweeping over the mountain and into MY valley! Damn... the tent is now a giant bag. Throw everything into the tent and haul it to the vehicle, we have to go. Saw the area burning as we climbed over the eastern ridge on our way home. When we finally got home it was hell. Temperature was 65 five degrees F inside, my wife was wearing a thick sweater and saying she could turn the heat down some more if I wasnt comfortable. No, I told her, thanks though. Before Im comfortable the pipes will freeze. Cutoffs, spread out on the sofa with a big floor fan blowing on me, sweating from the heat. I had to adjust again.

I definitely need to get a layer that is windproof. This next year I am going to do alittle research and buy a new outer layer. The wind in Wisconsin can and will get brutal. Opening weekend so far looks like it's going to be windy. Thanks for all the information on this subject.. I always put something on the bottom of my stand so my boots aren't directly on metal and that helps. I also take a small sleeping bag or fleece blanket to cover up with when needed. And I've been loading up with hand warmers. They really do help.

Hunting some of the hollows in North-Central PA is just over 1,000 feet from bottom to top and we have to wear t-shirts to hike in and change about a 3/4 of a mile away from the stand and seal all the sweaty clothes in ziploc bags.

Great video. I froze last year, especially my feet and hands (also diabetic). Love the non brand level advice. In the past I've have just kept buying stuff to try and find something that was quiet, comfrotable, and works. I'll use your tips here. Have you ever thought about doing something on other equipment like scopes? I have bought so many scopes to find one I like (just like clothes), because I didn't know what to look for. That’s all that matters to me is staying warm. We’ve had a lot of wind lately in temps running in the low low 20’s to the teens. I went to Academy they was sold out of hand warmers. Them tube hand warmers I mean. I have a Rocky insulated coat it’s waterproof and very warm.

Just passed down a set to my Step son last year,I also purchased quality clothing in 1998. Purchase good stuff,take care of it and it will last you a long time. Hi B! I wash them in ElimiShield laundry detergent roughly every 4-6 sits. Before any real important rut sits, gun season opener, etc.

Last year it was 10* prior to wind. I had crappy boots and used foot warmers under my toes..and yes there very uncomfortable. My BIL is trying rechargable heated socks this year.

Jeff I watch a lot of your videos and the ones on how to dress and stay warm. I get my first Sitka clothes this fall. I have hunted in other brands. An I will say Sitka is good. I uses to dress in layers using fleece and wool plus some type of wind stopper clothing, like a wind breaker type pants and top. It worked since I'm on a budget but it was also bulky. I will say that when I got my Sitka clothes this fall. I watched very closely for sales on them. And feel I got a great deal on them. One thing I did notice that you didn't say anything about wearing your Mickey Mouse boots for cold weather hunting. An I believe they are a great rubber boot that will keep your feet warm in extreme cold weather hunts.

I like mine but with the over 20 treestand setups I hunt, it is awkward in many. Low cover trees especially. Great product tho! I think it takes a lot of experience to get away with the movement needed for a shot with one. Just my opinion. My wife loves it for extreme cold blind hunting!

I got a old pair of dux back overalls I bought before most of your viewers were born and they’re still warm as can be. I’m diabetic to and on blood thinners so I can’t stand cold 🥶 neither. I got a pair of Lacrosse rubber boots a couple years ago and they roast me sometimes

Great vid! As a snowboarder merino wool and strategic layering has been a staple for yeara when we go out west on the big mtns. I am a true believer in the sitka gear and like you said, a moisture wicking base layer is crucial. One other trick for cold feet. I noticed that my feet would sweat walking in and then cold toes was a foregone conclusion. If you have a heavy hike in, wear a thin pair of socks and when you get to your stand take em off and throw on your warm ones. Also make sure you loosen your shoe laces to allow for full circulation. Lastly, what part of PA did you go rifle hunting? 7-800 feet of elevation change sounds like clinton county. We have a camp up in Clinton, crazy steep mountains. Had to move away from a climber and switch to a saddle to not die climbing those steeps.
