How to Sterilize Wood for Your Reptile Enclosures (Bleach Method)

So there’s two ways you can go about securing wood for your enclosures: collecting it yourself or purchasing. It is nearly free if you have the energy to collect and sterilize the wood yourself. There are 3 methods that are generally used for sterilization. You can either bake, boil or soak the wood in a bleach solution. In this video, I will be showing you the latter. If you do decide to use bleach please be sure you have done a thorough job of leaching the bleach from the wood.

Would I need to soak it in water after bleaching if I'm not using this for any animals? Just creating cool background pieces for my jewelry photography.

I dont see why not. If you bake it in the sun that can also help with the chemicals.

Does the bleach make the wood last longer as well? How many years do these branches typically stay good for in a humid python enclosure?

Admittedly im not sure if the bleach has an effect on longevity. My main reason for using it is disinfecting. I imagine you could use a reptile safe sealant like polyurethane if you're concerned about the humidity.

I would also look up what they do for driftwood that they use in aquariums since that would obviously be a wet environment

How long do I need to soak it in water afterwards? How periodically should I change the water?

I'm not sure if there's a correct answer. If you are not in a hurry then just leave it overnight to allow the bleach to seep out. Allowing it to bake in the sun definitely makes a difference as well.

Do you have the option of bringing them inside? If there are small enough you can safely put them in the oven.

Chlorine evaporates after 24 hours. you had a lot so maybe not all of it was gone after 18 hours.
