Very clear video thank you. I was going throw a sewing drawer looking for my stitch in the ditch foot just yesterday and came across the box my walking foot came in and wondered why I had kept the box. I’m now thinking perhaps there is another foot in it. I’m excited to go and have a look now, and then having a trial run. Thank you so much from a beginner quilter. ❤

Hello Laura, Thank you very much for your return message. I am asking what is the best brand of safety pins to purchase, for pin basting a quilt. I have seen a safety pin fastener that is supposed to make it easier on your hands to close the safety pins but not sure if it is one of the "can't live without items" I have not purchased these items but I am in the process of gathering things that will be need, to start quilting smaller quilts. Thank you for the tutorials you share with us. KZbin is wonderful! Pamela Granger

I do use a good safety pin like this amzn.to/2kIhIsF it has a curve on it, which makes it easier to use. I do also have that tool amzn.to/2sDBlFN It is easier on the hands. You can also use a spoon! Try the spoon and see if makes a difference :) hope this helps!

Laura, I have always sent my quilt tops to get quilted, but it is getting rather expensive and I would like to be able to quilt smaller items myself. I noticed you uses pins for this baby quilt but what sizes and brand of safety pins do you recommend when having to pin baste for larger items? I do have some arthritis in my hands and wondered if you ever used a pin fastener or is it not a real useful tool? Thank you for all of your wonderful tutorials. How to purposed construction of stone masonry ditch work?
@jolynnrood96505 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your help. This was the 1st time I was going to try "Stitch in the Ditch". My problem is, I already I ironed & lightly starched the back side of my rows open! I watched how to do this long time ago, to help the fabric lay flat. It looked like I shouldn't have ironed them open, to make a hill, on one side of the ditch. I'm going to hate ironing them back to one side. Can I still try "stitch in the ditch" with leaving them ironed open ? Or should I just Ditch it, & do it on the next quilt I make?
@jolynnrood96505 жыл бұрын
Never mind I read the comments from a year ago, where you said, "not to sew in the center because it will weaken the stitch. Instead sew 1/4 inch over, to sew on 2nd layer of fabric underneath. I saw that commented on twice, so I think that's right. If that's not right let me know.

Can you still use the stitch im the ditch if you press open your seams?
@SewVeryEasy6 жыл бұрын
yes it is, however keep in mind that you are stitching over top of the stitching line, and it can weaken the threads. For seams press open I would recommend stitching 1/4 beside, so that the stitching stays strong.

This makes me wonder: Why are seam allowances pressed to the side, instead of being pressed open?
@adriennegallagher62826 жыл бұрын
It results in a stronger seam. If they were pressed to each side, there would be no fabric in the middle to stitch on. That being said, some sewists like to press open for a flatter seam.
@DWRead-ms8wi6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Adrienne. I'd always wondered about the reason. Would it be easier to control the foot if the seam is flat and pressed open?Stitching on the median instead of stitching in the ditch.
@adriennegallagher62826 жыл бұрын
While it is technically easier, it's not a great idea. Keep in mind what is going on. The stitches are falling in the ditch, which in the case of pressed open seams means that the quilting going over the connecting patchwork stitches and then falling into the batting. No fabric to support the stitching on the top side. So if you press seams open, you're probably not going to stitch in the ditch. Free motion quilting or stitching across the seams would be more long-lasting. That being said, every quilter has his/her favourite methods!
@SewVeryEasy6 жыл бұрын
I can see Adrienne answered you:) I have the best viewers, it is great how we what to help each other out:)
