this is the best saddle stitch video I've watched. so many others don't show good enough angles to really see how the looping goes. or they stitch way to fast. thanks for this, its getting saved in my leather craft playlist.

Thank you so much for this great feedback. I remembered having a hard time finding out how to do it properly. And I didn't want others to struggle that much. Happy it helps 🥰

Great job and great tutorial! I have been sewing for a while and suggest to notice the punched holes slant direction, bottom of the holes are towards you. This detail is veeery important! Patience and consistance are also crucial! 😂

Thank you for your feedback and for pointing out this detail. It might help other people who struggle with their first steps at saddle stitching 👌🥰

Beautiful thread looks like linen! 🧵 whats the make and color?

Thank you for asking. This is a polyester pre-waxed thread from TenColorsOfLight. This one is a 0.6mm round thread in turquoise.

I'm so happy about this and have to try to pull in another direction. Seems like I have been pulling my threads the wrong way which might be why my stitches look wobbly, even though I am doing the needle and thread crossing correctly🤔
@LordLeatherCraft Жыл бұрын
Yeah sometimes just trying a new way can make things better. I was doing it differently at the beginning and couldn't get my lines right. Now it's all good with the pulling and the small cross/loop on my left side 😁

I did this with waxed thread on much thinner leather. Just two layers, but thinner. My stitches never look as neat as yours, though the holes are punched by a proper tool. Any hints? I tried coming in the back of the thread as you did, then in front (several stitches worth to get consistency) and nothing worked. It looks messy compared to yours. I did tension, then stretch the leather out to make sure there was no bunching etc. Help?
@LordLeatherCraft10 ай бұрын
Hello, Sorry this is happening to you. It could be several things. Some hints, I have better results on thin layers: - putting a bit less tension - not exaggerating the movement (left hand less high and right hand less low) - using french style pricking irons instead of diamond style. It's mostly a feeling you'll get by practicing so it's hard to explain. I know other crafters have other techniques, so I suppose this can be an individual approach each of us find with time and practice. Hope this can help you at least a little 😊👍

@@LordLeatherCraft thank you mate. I will then continue to practice and see what I can do. Appreciate the help

Armitage leather just released a 3 hour(!) series on saddle stitching. Super long I know, but it really helped me understand the mechanics of the stitch and in turn how to get a consistent look, would recommend.

How to do it with soft cloth like leather ? I cant maintain tension
@LordLeatherCraft3 ай бұрын
Unfortunately I don't know. I suppose the stitch pattern can be made with a machine and the right tension. With soft leather it's also hard to get the right shape because of the tension, but you usually need to apply less tension to get it right.

Can you do this with flat thread ?
@LordLeatherCraft Жыл бұрын
Hello 👋 Yes you can, that's the exact same process except you'll try to keep the thread flat on the visible part of the thread to avoid having a twist directly against the leather.

It's a french style normal direction iron of 3.85mm and a thread of 0.6mm 🙂

Will be better if got different color of needle..for newbie
@LordLeatherCraft10 ай бұрын
That's a good point 👍 thank you for your suggestion. For teaching, maybe having 2 colours of thread would be easier (colour doesn't last on needles 😁)
@dompetmerah10 ай бұрын
@@LordLeatherCraft yes too bad, the color will disappear, except on the curved parts if there is such a needle.

What's the advantage?
@LordLeatherCraft2 ай бұрын
Hello, The advantage of what exactly? The french style saddle stitch? They are two things in one: stronger that machine stitch, and they also look fantastic 😊
@devinfahada48802 ай бұрын
@@LordLeatherCraft I mean what's the difference between French style and regular.. I don't really know but regular saddle stitch is same IMHO
@LordLeatherCraft2 ай бұрын
@@devinfahada4880 oh I see. The french style is the look of the stitch line. All points have a slightly diagonal shape. The Saddle stitch is the technique of using 2 needles to create a strong seam by balancing the tension on both sides of the pieces you are stitching. You can saddle stitch on a round, diamond, flat or diagonal holes. The diagonal is called French and I think diamond is called Japanese because of their origins. Both the technique and aspect of the holes can change the end look.

My issue is threading the needle 😂
@LordLeatherCraftАй бұрын
@@BlkKeyCptl my pro tips: cut the thread in diagonal (bevel) to make a slightly pointy tip. Easier to thread the needle! (Works on waxed thread)
@BlkKeyCptlАй бұрын
Thanks.... However, Im ok with getting the tread through the eye (which im told is the hardest part) its the knotting. I put the needle through the thread a couple of times to create loops but it doesnt knot

Thats what ive been doing but when i get to the end where you pull it off the needle to a knot mine just falls away and does not knot. Ill try again. Thanks.
@LordLeatherCraftАй бұрын
@@BlkKeyCptl ha that's weird indeed. Is it waxed enough? I also know I can't achieve this with some brands that put less wax in their threads, but I have my own block of hard bees wax now 😁👍
