Can those plants live in tropial country ?
@PaulZyCZ9 күн бұрын
38:00 - pH is just acidity (but it can be relevant, for wild-caught fish for example). Water hardness or dGh refers usually to several different minerals, mostly "calcium and magnesium carbonates, bicarbonates and sulfates". TDS meter says even less, because it measures conductivity (demineralized or distilled water is insulant). Kitchen salt for example raises conductivity, but not the hardness. Other thing is the water can be like a cave water, but not containing enough Calcium or Magnesium. That can be issue with plants, but it's bigger issue with shrimp, scuds or other animals and there are other things to consider (Nitrates and Phosphates in the tap water). Interestingly in hi-tech tanks water turns soft and slightly acidic, because plants use all the nutrients fast and CO_2 acts like a weak acid.

I'm at my 8th too with 4 more on the way :D I'm now building the tanks from scratch and built a floor to ceiling 'cabinet' in the living room they are filling in. I still only use small bubble filters and internal pumps as I feel they're enough - only problem is I usually want the water flow at the front of the tank which makes it harder to hide than a canister pipe. What styles have you been creating?

I think it would be great to give my own timeline. 3 years ago I put a loose bag of soil in a tank and ruined it. Then I mesh bagged the soil in the next tank. I used the cheapest and easiest stem plants. I added grass (died). 5 tanks later I’ve got the most beautiful planted tanks. A cube for shrimp FULL of epiphytes on spider wood and an amazing 2 foot tank. It took me 2 years to settle in the cube. It was empty and a piece of wood. I bought soil, plants. My 2 foot had co2 and it grew in very nicely until co2 ran out, now it is fine and where I like it. 3-5 years is a great time! If you want to rescape every month.. bad news

Great video. I really enjoy your content and how you present your information. I have seen in several of your other videos about how you leave on your lights for 10, 12 maybe 14 hours a day. Do you always start with this length and adjust the intensity of the light. For example, you have the light on for 12 hours at 60% intensity. Leave it like that for two weeks and if you don’t see algae you bump up the intensity by 5/10 % and repeat? On the other hand, if you see a ton of algae after two weeks, you lower the intensity by 5/10%? Bottom line - Don’t mess with the light duration and focus on adjusting the intensity … is this the correct approach? Thank you for the video and keep up the great content!

A decent way to keep diggers out of the nutrient substrate is to cap it with 1cm or 2 of sand then put some "eggcrate" on that & pile the rest of the sand on top. If you put the eggcrate directly on the dirt layer, chances are, the movement of the fish hitting it may still kick up dirt into the water, so the sand layer gives it a little more flex room.

Great vid! BTW, You probably already know this but, If you want to show the changes in lighting intensity on camera, set the camera for manual exposure, no auto exposure setups such as aperture and/or shutterspeed priority or auto iso. Set tghe camera in manual exposure mode then set the aperture, SS and ISO manually and then change the actual light level on the aquarium light. This will show the changes because the camera will not adjust accordingly.
@MDFishTanks9 күн бұрын
Yeah, I only use manual mate. Aquariums are just hard in general as you have such bright lights above and then can make everything below dark if you expose for the light brightness. Not to hard but though it was worth mentioning
@danbrown89799 күн бұрын
@@MDFishTanks Humm? You mentioned that the camera "adjusts" to the lighting intensity changes. It shouldn't do that if every setting is truly in manual. I guess I just don't understand your settings. Keep up the great vids!

Something I've come to see with hard water is that it makes it tougher to run tanks without water changes. The phosphates and other minerals accumulate if you're just topping it off. For me, it's led to black beard algae issues. Phosphates aren't talked about enough. I'd love to see API include the test in their master test kit.

29:00 - very good point, esp. with the low-tech approach (no CO_2 injections to supercharge plant growth) there is always some plant which should be growing, yet it doesn't. For me Staugyrone Repens doesn't grow at all, despite being "Easy", Pearlweed grows slowly w/o CO_2, but Rotalla Walichi grows at normal speed, despite being "Difficult". Sometimes the plant just needs to be moved to a different tank.

Great video. Quick explanation on the pH to clear it up. Water hardness and TDS has little effect on plants. Its the high pH caused by calcium and the resulting carbonates that causes high pH. High KH is detrimental to plants . You can have high hardness and yet moderate pH based on other factors. However, you are fooling yourself thinking your 8 2 tap like I have isn't an issue. I constantly figh with beginners to get their starter tank to a pH of 7 and ignore other factors. MD admitted his Mbuna tank is in the mid 7s, and that's miles away from 8 to 8 2 I hear they prefer.

I do dirted tanks with that 4" of dirt & sand substrate 😅 In my first tank, I wanted to see all of the layers & how they change over time, as well as the pond critters that would emerge as it cycled. But the rest of my tanks are also dirt-plated (except 1 betta tank because he's a digger) with the dirt mounded up in back & pulled away from the sides (1") so that just the sand is visible. I know lots of people don't want to see the dirt layer, but can we talk about aquasoil looking just as out of place & equally messy too (unless carpeting plants are hiding it).

Is it acceptable to use wood from coniferous trees in a fish tank? I’ve seen some debate about this and it’s unclear to me. I see it a lot in natural fish bearing streams here in the Pacific Northwest, so I’m very curious.

A sump system of some kind is perfect and it can be made cheap.

Oh yeah, I'm over here in the US with liquid rock & these methods work perfectly fine here as well. Calcium rocks = hard water, botanicals = soft water. Mine's a little too hard for my neocaridina shrimp, straight up, so I keep them in tanks with 3-4 oak or catappa leaves at any given time, just to lower the ph .5-1 degree.
