Believe me, if the person is a complete idiot it does not work. I have dealt with people that say that I explain that mine is not friendly and they still would not put their dog on a leash. I had one guy say oh don't worry my dog won't do anything after I tell them my dog is not friendly. Its like what I say went in one ear and then out the other.

Great video! "Don't worry, he's friendly" is seriously one of the most spoken lies in this country. One response that worked for me was getting our Aussie behind me and really loudly yelling "no" in my full-deep, I really mean it voice. I had the advantage of time as the dog was coming across a soccer field, and I am not a small man, but still it worked.

I had a high-anxiety fear-aggressive dog that used to attack high-energy dogs. I used this same "stand in front of the dog" method (my behaviourist taught me this) for years. I always did the intimidating body posture and voice thing. Worked every time, thankfully. My dog and I did this so many times together, it was so cute to see him just fall in line with it and RELAX. To see him relax was one of the best experiences of my life. Knowing that I helped him.

Thank you for these suggestions! I have a young GSD, does well on leash but VERY dog reactve...while at the park (leash required) a lady walking toward me with big Labrador off leash yells "don't worry, he is friendly!" - he comes charging up to my dog and she went crazy - my GSD is a rescue - besides being mistreated by people she had been attacked by another dog - her yelps of pure fear attracted the attention of other walkers who tried to help the women catch and control her dog, it was awful. I worked hours building the confidence in my little girl to trust I would keep her safe, this experience set us back. Please, please, please....even if your dog is good with other dogs...never allow it to approach another dog without owner approval.

Perfect! This is one of my biggest fears when I'm walking my dog. My dog is dog reactive. The last thing I want is for her to get terrified and get aggressively defensive. It could be the tipping point for her and she might never be unafraid of dogs again. But I know that, being the one with the big German Shepherd, I'll be the one blamed for the encounter.

Just today I caused a charging pitbull to retreat when I discharged my teaser, the sound and the spark scares them. I got my dog use to the teaser sound and trained him to stand beside me when I discharge it. The backup is pepper spray! Both were suggested by a police friend. A spike collar is great protection for your dog as well! Here in Southern California so many people get putbull dogs and fail to train them! There are lots of dog attacks and dogs getting lose from their yards! Do not take a risk, have many back up plans. Different defensive things work but not all work on all dogs! The Pepper spray is a blessing to have when all else fail! Report all encounters so that future dangers might be prevented! Honestly my teaser by teaser made in USA has been the best tool and can be used against 2 legged threats as well!

I have a hundred pound german shepherd who was previously used as a guard dog and was never socialized so is reactive to other dogs, thankfully with a lot of hard work he is extremely well behaved as long as dogs dont run up on him. My go too's are an umbrella, I have a long flash light that doubles as a stun gun, and foam pepper spray. I never leave our house with out one of these. The popping open of the umbrella surprisingly works rather well and seems to frighten dogs off and it gives a visual barrier which helps distract and break the other dogs concentration.

So grateful for this video. I have two small terriers that I walk and a large aggressive dog charged us a few months ago, I had enough time to pick up my dogs and luckily my yelling stopped him but it was terrifying. These are my first small dogs as I've always had large shepherds pit bulls and mixes and I knew if they were attacked they would survive it but these little ones wouldn't. I'll be using your method!!

I can tell you for a fact that even a small dogs bite hurts. I been through it many times and stepping in front of my dog and using loud commands to stop have worked ever time except once. The time it didn’t work it happened to fast and 2 dogs were on mine before I knew it. Both the loose dogs had collars and I was able to grab them. I did injury my wrists but was able to stop the attack. The 2 owners were useless and until I stopped it they didn’t even try to help. Plan , plan, plan or you will be sorry. Carry pepper spray or a dazer 2 type until. Most dog owners are totally unprepared for what will certainly happen eventually. I was, but not anymore.

Thank you for this! My dog is not usually dog friendly. One time when I took her for a walk there was a pit that i see occasionally loose. My dog and this other dog circled each other. Fur was raised on both dogs. I was so worried it would turn into a fight. I just started yelling shoo! What’s worse is the owners were watching from the window and thought it was funny. Luckily the other dog found something more interesting across the street.

I kicked an off lead kelpie the second time it went for my terrier (also off lead). This caused its female owner to hit me (a large male). Now I was already in fight or flight mode and I had a sudden impulse that I’ve never had before to hit her back. Thankfully I didn’t, but I’m not proud of the horrible verbal abuse I gave her. These situations can cause aggression in people as much as dogs. Need to prepare myself not to get into fight mode when protecting my dog.

The other videos I've been watching have comments disabled but I wanted to say a quick thank you! I was feeling quite defeated after taking our leashed dog to a off leash/leashed dog park. Its 1000 acres and as there are specific trails for leash and non leash we decided to continue on leash. We only encountered about 3 groups who respected our boundaries and knew we did not want to be approached. On the flip side there were 3 dogs 2 of which with owners very far or not even in sight and they charged. The only regret I have is tensing up my dog which I'm sure made her flight mode not any better. But as soon as dog showed it was not stopping we took both sides of our dog and became loud and vocal to call off the dog. Sometimes I feel like it's a never ending battle but if I can be more confident I know my dog can be also.

Just recently I was going for a walk and noticed an unleashed dog wandering around. Of course as soon as he spotted me he ran right up and started growling/barking. I just yelled "HEY" as loud as I could a couple of times and told him to "GO". Surprisingly he listened. 😂

I found that people who yell, "my dog's friendly!" as their big dog charges toward my dog, either don't know their dog or are full of BS. 75% of the times this happens, their dog sniffs then attacks my dog, or just attacks unprovoked. Then the owner says, "my dog has never done this before," or they try to say my dog must have done something their dog didn't like! Hello, my dog listens to commands and is leashed! If your dog was under your control, this wouldn't have happened. It happens so frequently that it's taken the fun out of our outdoor hikes and my dog is afraid to be approached by any big dog. I'm going to try this method. Thanks! 👍

I walk dogs in south philly and off-leash dogs are the biggest problem I face regularly. It is so frustrating that people think it is okay to do and act like they are dog experts while doing it. Perfect example of the Dunning-Kruger effect. Someone actually died a few blocks from my house because they asked someone to leash their dog and the guy punched him so hard that he fell over and smashed his head on a rock

Nothing smooth or good about the situation period. It happens lighting fast and you have 3 concerns to contend with all wrapped up in a moment. First, your dogs. Second the charging dog and get ready for #3..The Owner ! Oh and BTW, the attacking dog is still loose while you deal with the aggressive owner. Count on the owner next, because the mentality is there. Believe me, the owner knows about their dogs aggressive behavior, and the leash laws etc.. They know and don't care. They don't care about you. Your dogs or even their own dog(s). Laws, nothing.. So be prepared for that HELL ! Remember this. Dogs are a reflection of their Owners. Just like children are a reflection of their parents. The raising and the training. Both accounts ! So if you have an aggressive dog charging or attacking you. Know the Owner is trouble as well.. Double Trouble !

Oh em gee..i'm so glad i found your channel! after watching a few vids, i smashed that subscribe button. I have a rescued 3 yr old 90 lb GS/Husky?/Pitty? ...Heinz 57 mix. that I am working with ..he's coming around and getting better on walks...still reactive to other dogs, squirrels, skate boarders...etc....I can't wait to try out your techniques tomorrow! I had two separate "oh shit" moments with walks recently. We have a big open field/park that backs up to residential fenced yards. Some times there are two yappers that my guy reacts to when they are in their yard. we were the ONLY people in the park area at the time....Well they were out one day in the yard yappin thru the fence.....my dog is growling, lunging and whatnot....BOTH of our attention is directed towards the dogs on the other side of the fence.....unbeknownst to us....another dog owner joined the park from the far end ..about at least 100 yards away and let his dog go off leash....his dog bee lines for us!! my dog is already is all hyped up from the dogs on the fence..and in my periphs, i catch some movement heading our way.....i see this 25 lbs soon to be dog chew toy running right for us..... i yelled to to the owner.....DUDE. GET YOUR DOG NOW!!!.....he casually jogs over, meanwhile I am doing a ballet dance pulling back on his body harness handle to keep his front paws and head up, and this other dog is running around us in circles trying to jump up and nip at my guy....who would DESTROY this dog in a blink if i gave him the chance. i was trying to use my leg to punt his ass away, but he was moving too fast around to make any solid connect. The owner FINALLY gets over to his dog and grabs him...and just walks away...no "SORRY" ...He had ZERO recall response with his dog....highly irresponsible ...i was so winded from doing my "dance", and focused on just getting away...i didn't give him a piece of my mind as i wanted to (in retrospect) . following week, I am just out minding my own on a quiet street....and i see this tiny mop with legs come running from his yard....we are walking in the street (no sidewalks on this particular street)..hes not full on bullet mode, but he's moving at a quick pace right towards us.....i'm looking at the house ...looking for an owner or someone to call the dog back...nothing...i'm trying to move away briskly, my dog is going bonkers.....this dog is still coming at us, i'm yelling...stomping...just wouldn't stop....just trying to maintain distance...it was like the tiniest stalker....just wouldn't stop ....finally we got far enough he lost interest..or we were far enough from his turf. Really looking forward to watching the rest of your content!!! Thank you !!!!

Being charged by an off-leash dog is the WORST. I’ve had my dog for 3 months and it has happened 4 times. Two of those times, it was TWO unsecured dogs charging my dog. Yesterday morning on our walk before I leave for work, two Pugles were loose right in front of my house. Looked like they had escaped their yard. I pulled my Husky behind me and yelled/stomped, but those two Pugles had tunnel vision on my dog. Kicking only works for a couple seconds. Maybe I didn’t kick hard enough because they kept diving back in. Well… my dog pinned one of them on their back, biting it as it yelped. My dog’s instincts kicked in and he wasn’t hearing me. I really thought he was going to kill this dog on my driveway. But my dog finally released his bite to take a breath and I could yank him off the dog. Both dogs ran away. My dog ended up with a small cut on his eyelid. I really hope he didn’t puncture that little dog. Idk what house they live at or whether they found their way home. My dog was fine with other dogs, but these attacks are making him aggressive against ANY dog we encounter 😢 It makes me so mad. I’ve also gotten the “My dog is friendly” then I respond WELL MINE IS NOT! ffs

I have a retractable baton I run with so if we get approached by off leash dogs I flick it open and swing it or will even “bop” the other dog on the nose and block them from getting to my dog. It works really well and is easier to aim with (for me) than the clip method!

this exact same thing happened to me yesterday, me and my chow were out training his structured walk. we just started 3 days ago. my neighbor let’s out his big ass malamute. i damn near shit my pants and tried to turn my chow around before he saw the neighbors dog. My chow is VERY dog reactive, we’re still working on it. my chow sees the other dog and immediately starts pulling on his leash. the other dog comes towards my chow, i’m trying to pull him back. all of this is happening while i’m yelling at my neighbor “get your dog!! my dog isn’t friendly!!” the other dog comes towards my leg, my dog lunges at the other dog and accidentally bites my leg thinking he bit the other dog. my very first dog bite. i would’ve never thought it would’ve been my own dog. very discouraging, but i want to get better, for the both of us. all i could think about walking home was your video. you’re amazing for what you do. i got a prong collar and it has completely changed both of my chow chows walks. we’re still working on their reactively but it’s a work and progress. any tips to avoid this from happening again apart from the video? thank you koco!

Oh I’m so sorry, that’s so frustrating😣 the best way for me to control those situations is to remind myself “I don’t care how their dog reacts, MINE will remain neutral” - the more calm and neutral I can keep my dogs, the better chance I have at getting away from those situations unscathed. Keep working with your pups!! Sometimes, you just chalk it up to “shit happens” and move thru it♥️

Easy to say teach structured walk, not for me I really need to get a professional trainer. I finally have him after 3 walks a day doesn't lunge at cars or bark, or go crazy seeing people. He's a mini schnauzer and major arousal issues. He's one year 3 months, he's came so far but a long ways to go. Thanks so much for the video, had one come at us other day, it's like they stay calm but all I can think is him getting hurt. Wish I had money to get a good trainer but don't right now. Watch all the videos like yours very helpful.

What do you do when you are out running with your dog and a dog either runs at us or chases us? I've had both instances, luckily we were able to get away but I would love to learn the best possible approach. I have a GSD and people automatically go on the defensive against my dog and I. Often times it's the smaller dogs that run at him. Most recent instance, we were running through a gas station and a Frenchie bulleted out of a van and went at his neck from the side. I grabbed my GSD quick and whipped him behind but the small dog was already under my feet. The owner just stood there, in shock I think, but I was not a happy camper. I'm usually very loud in my "NO" or "BACK" but my fear is my dog or I will get in trouble for another dogs actions.

I've said that. My pitbull is terribly friendly. She ran out to the street to greet someone walking their little dog who was terrified of her. The neighbor stayed calm and didn't move which allowed me to get my dog. I stopped allowing her to be off leash because she scares people and their pets- unintentionally. I've been on the other side of that but either I wasn't told if the dog was friendly or it clearly wasn't friendly. And it's not fair to anyone else to have my dog off leash.

You don't know if your dog will be friendly to the other dog, if that dog doesn't want to be approached. I'm a friendly/neutral person, but if you charge at me, I'm going to become defensive and attack you. That's why you never allow your dog to approach another dog without express permission. When I've had reliable off leash dogs, I always called my dog to my side until we passed the other person. It's just basic courtesy. Dogs, like people, will never be 'friendly' to every other member of the species and the first time your dog ends up in a fight, might be the other dog's last day on earth. So I would say you're doing the right thing. If I see an off leash Pit running towards my dog, I'm not interested in whether or not the owner thinks it's friendly. So called friendly Pits have casually out holes in my dogs' throats three times now, luckily just puncture wounds, and each time the owner seems surprised.

wish I had watched this sooner! I had my fairly well trained shitzu tied to a bench I was sitting at in a park and in the distance an off leash pittie mix was coming to say hi and I had no idea what to do but walk up to the dog and hopefully distract it from my dog sitting under the bench. the dog walked around me and went to try and see my dog, I grabbed my dog and attempted to walk away from the situation (as previous videos suggested to get your dogs focus back on you) as the owner very slowly tried to catch up and tells me to stop moving so her dog will stop following us and then she can leash him. I was terrified!

Carry a pick axe hiking stick. They have a spike at the tip and small axe and pick at the top and have a leash on the top to wrap around your hand. Or a walking stick with a spike at end. A pitbull or mastiff will NOT let go of your dog. I've seen one clamp on. The dog owner dog being attacked kicked it repeatedly in the chest and it would not leg go. It sounded hollow. This was broad daylight in a busy street.

Watching this because my 9 year old yellow lab was attacked by a young pitbull this evening. I'm not as brave as you. don't think I'm going to try to swing something or kick that dog. Doubt if he would of cared. Luckily his owner tackled him and held him down giving us time to retreat back in side as we were only a few feet from my front door. My dog only suffered one small cut to her head from the pits teeth. Another video recommended pepper spray, I think I will get some of that.

Yeah, no. First thing to do is drop the leash. Most dogs that come running up to you are actually friendly. But what happens is that humans get scared. It transferred to your dog, and your dog goes defensive. Changes are if you just drop the leash, your dog will meet and greet and everything is. But then ther is that one in a million time where it's actually an aggressive dog. When the leash is dropped, your dog is able to increase the distance from that other dog. Assuming your dog trusts you, it will not run away from you. It will circle around you, trying to get away from the aggressive dog while simultaneously keeping its distance from the other dog. Your job is then to be the wall that separates the dogs. Until the other owner kan catch up to its dog.

Soooo I have had to straight up toss my dog in a trashcan to get her out of harms way of a dog charging us. Not the prettiest method but always an option

@Entity Water Well put on leash your dog then, good for you and your dog. Since most attacks were from street dogs that doesn't matter.

Carry a knife if you cant carry a gun. If a dog attack you have to save your self. Big dog would of been a alot worse and if more then one. Carabiner won't hurt a pitbull.

That’s terrible advice! Just kick the charging dog in between their front leg in the chest area. One good kick will knock them out for a few minutes out of breath. Or walk with a pepper spray

This idiot is giving very bad advice; NEVER kick a dog - it is cruel, and it is (rightfully) illegal. You are not "keeping everybody safe", you are maliciously assaulting someone else's pet because you didn't have the maturity to react with words. Grow up and get over yourself.

If the dog is physically attacking me and or my dog, sorry but I'm ok with kicking that dog....or using any other method or means to stop the attack. Words are not enough! (Sadly)

That is absolutely not illegal in many places. In many places, you're allowed to use whatever degree of force is necessary to protect yourself, just as you can against a human. I've spoken with police officers in a number of cities about this and they've all said the same thing. It's self-defense and that is absolutely legal where I live, as long as the degree of force is appropriate for the situation. "Words" are not going to stop a full-on attack.
