I'm in tears. I feel so vindicated. Thank you, off leash dogs running at us has been our main problem for years. You are the first person to make me feel like I was right the whole time. One of my dogs is a reactive mastiff/boxer cross who loves dogs but doesn't like being accosted by off leashers. Ive lost all the skin from my butt SO many times.

I have done the stand your ground and yell go at a charging dog and it works. I said it with force and the dog knew I meant it! This technique stopped the dog in the middle of the road and I shouted go again and it put it's head down and left. This was a bulldog that was after my smaller dog.

Happened to me too! Big dog was charging towards my two smaller dogs, I yelled firm and loud while stepping forward in front of my dogs, and the other dog stopped dead in his tracks. I can't count the number of times I've had to protect my dogs from off leash dogs. They weigh 3kg and wouldn't survive an attack.

It's always scary walking my dog, especially since I'm disabled. I had a huge dog come running out to attack mine and I have no way to defend us so I yelled as loud and mean as I could at it. Evidently I can be really scary because the dog bowed down and my hyperactive dog was frozen in place. The dogs owner seemed surprised to run out of his house to his steroid dog cowering to a girl in a wheelchair.

You should really invest in a can of the bear spray. I haven’t seen any reg pepper spray that throws as big of a cloud and as far as the bear spray. Plus it will have multiple good big blast in it. Don’t want till something happens. I dog that truly means to do you or your dog real harm yelling is not going to do a thing. I guarantee you that. That spray should deter even the most aggressive dogs though.

@@apbt067 I wish I could use sprays, i physically can't use them. I have a condition that affects my muscles and joints so I can't even hold a small can. I just try to be vigilant and watch ahead for any danger. Usually I have someone with me like my dad. He's had to physically stop a couple of dogs. We had to have a talk with a neighbor last year because they were fostering a very aggressive dog that they would leave tied up out in the front yard. One day it slipped its leash and my dad ended up shoving him to the ground because he wasn't intimidated by us. I know where all the dangerous spots in the neighborhood are so I actively try to avoid them. In four years we have been very fortunate to not have a dog bite any of us.

It's all about reading the temperament of your dog. Some respond extremely well to only positive reinforcement and that's great some of the more hard-headed alpha dogs only respond to respecting you and that requires from Corrections and consistent behavior on your part all the time
@bslizardette4669
@bslizardette4669 2 жыл бұрын
My first dog responded perfectly to full-positive, so I of course stuck with that since she was reliable with it. My current dog, however, is higher energy and dominant type. At first I started with purely positive with him as well (he came to me at 18 months with issues so I wanted to be gentle), but about a year later I realized that he was only 80% reliable, followed my commands only because he wanted to make me happy, and had the illusion that we were equal in our position - this meant that whenever we were in a stressful/high-stimulus situation and he needed to listen to me the most, he chose not to. Establishing clear limits to reinforce my leader position worked wonders, and now he turns to always check on me first. I can tell whenever I've been a bit too lenient with him, because he starts to question my commands, so I need to go back to the basics of reminding him who makes the decisions here. My last dog slept in my bed, under covers, and was allowed on furniture and I would go around her if she was lying on the floor to let her be comfortable. My current dog sleeps beside my bed on the floor, never gets to be on the couch, and always changes the place he's relaxing at if I want to walk there. Small gestures, but if I don't keep up with these, he starts testing my resolve. It's all about balancing your strategy with techniques that provide the best results with your dog and creates that trusting bond of working together, puppies usually respond the best when you focus on teaching them that working for you is fun and rewarding, albeit never forgetting where you want to establish the limits.

Because I love them and would give my life for them but I don’t baby them near as much kr often snd when I say come and they don’t I walk out there and get them. Haven’t had to in a while though. Love this! Especially the pepper spray part. Your videos are my favorite dog training videos. Super helpful and practical. Thanks for posting these! I’m adding this to my earlier comment …. Tonight I had to employ this technique while I was walking my 6 month old puppy in the field behind my house. Two very large dogs got away from their owner and were running towards us. I scooped her up, stepped forward, waved my other arm and yelled “GO”! And it worked! Both dogs stopped, turned around and went back to their owner. I’m so grateful you posted this video; I never knew what to do in this type of situation and it can be scary. Thanks again!

I have a neighbor who lets their dogs roam free, so I've gotten into the habit of correcting their dog when he comes charging up during walks. I don't care if they're outside too lol. I'm glad my instinct was right on that. e: I like to divide "scary things" into actual threats (dog charging up, car driving too fast down the street, etc) and loud noises (fireworks, vacuums, construction work) and teach the dogs that loud noises are no big deal. My neighbors were shooting some kind of firework off a few days ago and my 8 wk old puppy was scared to death by the first one, I called him outside again and told him it was no big deal, by the third one he was just sitting on my feet in concern but not running away scared. I get being scared, but once they get used to something just being a loud noise its ok.

I was walking my puppy today and a lady was about to walk by and asked if he was a puppy. I said yes, shortened the leash and made him sit. She told me she has been attacked before and thanked me for understanding her concern. We are still working on puppy manners and he wants to meet everyone, so he did get a little jumpy as she passed. I made sure to keep myself between them and to make sure there was no way for him to get close to the lady. I was happy that she expressed her concern and was more than happy to do whatever I could to make sure she felt safe around my dog.

I’ve been walking my Aussie mix for four years and have never had an encounter with an off leash dog coming at us. I watched this video yesterday, and first thing this morning I had to use the technique he demonstrates. A cocker spaniel came charging at us, and I don’t think that he was going to attack my dog, but I didn’t want to take the chance. So I used his technique and when the dog got within 8 feet of us he dropped his head turned around and slinked off. Amazing. Thanks Joel.

Fantastic video! Pepper spray is the safest most effective way to stop an off leash dog! I’ve had to use mine twice. I don’t have a little dog I have a 60lbs American Staffordshire terrier but still. I don’t need my dog getting hurt or the other dog. Stopped both dogs immediately and they both were pitbull type dogs that charged at us. Owners weren’t to happy but i immediately told them would you rather go home with just a leash and collar? Temporary eye discomfort is nothing compared to serious injury or death. Also! Train your dogs “back” after the first incident I went home and started training my dog “back” so she gets completely behind me and I would put my arm behind my back and lower my hand to my butt and give her the treat without turning around and looking at her and once she learned it I started doing it outside on walks with the leash on and that’s how she learned “back” that helped the second time around.

She no longer blocks the door and barrels out when I take her out for a bathroom break. When she gets too crazy with the cat, she comes when called and she will stay in the next room instead of returning to her crazy chasing. Your techniques have been very useful and I think you are very sweet, yet firm with all of those dogs.

This is very eye opening with the pepper spray! I had a situation happen last year where I was walking my lab pit mix in my neighborhood and a very old not super quick old gentleman was walking his medium sized dog but still smaller than my dog for sure. I crossed the street to avoid the dogs having contact especially since I saw the other dog was off leash. Since I've been slowly socializing my dog more and more its been getting better but he still is not 100% comfortable. I know this about my dog. This old mans dog was off leash and the dog suddenly crossed the street on his own to come greet my dog. The dog wasn't controlled off leash and my dog was scared and became aggressive. I was afraid that there would be an altercation. I yelled at the little dog to go and continued to move away from the situation. The little dog didn't care and continued to come towards my dog. The owner is completely helpless running after his dog slow as ever. I was able to get away from the situation and no dogs got hurt.The dogs never got nose to nose. My dog followed me running after only a short time when he lunged a little. But if I had had pepper spray I absolutely would have done that spray method. I'm gonna buy some to have on me just in case. There are people I see do off leash with their dogs in a normal neighborhood and I live in Los Angeles too. Busy streets cars etc. Even at public non dog parks I see lots of completely off leash(no long leash) But they don't have complete control of their dogs. I don't understand off leash in public. I just don't. Its a choice other dog owners are making to put other dogs at risk potentially. This video helps put me at ease at what you can do if you're in a bad situation.

Go to a hardware store. Buy metal chain pieces that can be fused together into a loop, normally any hardware store offers a service were they do that, costs not much. Carry such a rattling metal chain loop with you when you walk your dog. If a strange dog advances swiftly towards you and your dog throw the chain loop approximately in front and between the front legs of the dog. Any normal dog not having rabies will get away from you. This methode is called "Thunder and Lightning" and helped me a lot to defend my peaceful American Pitbull Terrier that was for some reason a favorite target of off leash dogs. The metal chain loop should fall from "higher up" and does noise, hence the name. It is the best, quickest non invasive defence against strange dogs I know. If you practise the throwing you will be able to do it well. The chain should not touch the other dog, it should rattle and snap the strange dog out of they prey drive. If for some reason the chain touches the dog one normally does not need to worry, if you buy a normal white metal chain it wont harm a dog. I never had the problem that I missed, my dog trainer demostrated the chain loop on his dogs for me when he introduced this technique to me, it is safe. One big pro point versus pepper spray is that pepper sprays can get into you and your dogs face/eyes if it is windy, the "Thunder and Lightning" was easy to learn and very reliable. The best to you and your pitti! 🙏🏼♥️🙂

As a pitbull owner all this crap people are suggesting here is nonsense. Like this guy got to the hardware store and what?? He talked about the spray for a reason. I’ve said it several times here order good size can of BEAR SPRAY!! Much easier to carry around the some stupid chains or whatever was suggested. And as back up a good size pocket knife or a firearm. I dog that wants to fight and engage if it is a strong breed or dog with any balls at all hollar if stopping any of this mess just isn’t going to work. The attacking dog will zip right around you while your rain dancing. And then you will panic and be one of those dummies pulling there dog back by the leash spinning circles holding the dogs head up where is literally can’t defend itself. He said he carries spray for the strong breeds. I have literally picked my dog up to head level to keep him from snatching someone’s smaller loose dog up. I don’t have say anything they could tell my thoughts by how I looked at them. But if you have a real game bred pit which isn’t likely. Let whoop some of those dogs around that are loose. Long as your is leashed they can say shit. Or get a firearm and take a few out when they try to attack your dog. The will start to put them up. Do what you have to do.

Of course my tip is made out of the wish not to harm other pets, other people and still secure the well being of my dog as it was given to me by a very competent dog trainer. 😉 My pitbull was an import from the US, came from a very "gamey" breeder, still never attacked herself, but was attacked a couple of times on the leash walking quietly on heel with me. Once the attack of the other dog was so swift, that I let go of the leash and let her defend herself. Luckily the other dog had not too much damage, she let go when I asked her to let go (we trained that specificially) and the policemen that were called believed my side of the story. Is still a situation I do not wish upon anyone. Carrying and using firearms is of course a solution for people, who would like to escalate. In my country hunters sometimes shoot dogs, who are running wild in the woods. The police also shoots dogs, who are out of control. The methode I mentioned is successful. Nobody needs to do it. People, who prefer to solve such situations peacefully will like it very much. In Europe we normally do not spray bearpepperspray (I really have to laugh about that one, I would like to see an average woman using bearspray in a correct way without training😂) or shoot our guns (which we also have 😅) at dogs to solve such situations. Especially if one can do it without escalation, never mind other people in the average city environment. If one lives on an insolated homestead off grid somewere in the country in the US one can surely use a couple of rounds to shoo off a dog or whatever. 🙂 I would like to see how that goes down in any larger City in the US today in "normal" districts.

@manjoumesan No worries he gave me a good chuckle. I have friends in the US and also ones, who own guns, none of them would shoot at a dog in a City environment. 😁 Too much hassle. I am glad that this idea is doable for you. I liked it a lot. Of course one other methode is to use a walking stick, nonetheless I preferred the throwing chains, I like having my hands free. I have lots of experience with "dog people" old shepherds and hunters, asked them a lot how they trained their dogs. Shepherds liked to use sling shots with paper balls to guide young herding dogs until they learn the verbal commands. If one starts to do some research one will find different creative training tools and methodes for various situations. Normally the rattling chain falling down "from the heavens" (dog perspective) stops them immidiately. That increases security for everyone involved and is absolutely harmless. I wish you the best! I also had my chain on my fanny pack, ready for action if needed. 😉

I don’t have a dog because I get nervous of many dogs that are off-leash. It felt better to see that even a professional trainer would get a pepper spray to stop another dog in attack mode. I think I will buy one and maybe reclaim my park and get a doggie.

Service dog handler here. Do you have recommendation for maintaining my own dog's comfort with approaches by strange dogs? Can I block another dog's approach and verbally ward off contact without causing my own dog to decide other dogs must be dangerous? We do get approached by pets in stores and it's important my dog remain calm and unbothered so he can work. BTW, pepper spray *does* work to stop an attack. It isn't necessary to spray the owner either. Being told their dog had been sprayed for biting a service dog was enough to ensure this particular dog was well-fenced from that day on. Thanks for talking about this.

Here where I live thousends of them every evening are out and no mather how much I try to walk loose leash and be good, problems are evrywhere.I am all the time alert and the walk is a nightmare.No one is taking care of it or will ever.I figured out that the only thi g I can do is make myself a powerful leader to solve this problem.I am totaly a peaceful woman and hate conflicts ,so be a leader is hard for me,but 6 month ago I started a big learning and working with myself on it.I hope it will work in the end.I was loosi g hope after 2 years of stress,but now I can finaly walk most of the tome halily.Conclusion...Work on myself the best way.The dog is only a friend who talks a different language than me.If I try to understand he also will try.I learned so much with the dog obout humans and myself as a mother.Corected a lot of my mistakes.And I didnt even want the dog😁

I was discussing this with my daughter who has a year old golden retriever. She and her placid dog were being confonted by a rapidly approaching snarling dog. She knew she could not rely on her much loved mutt for help. She crouched and snarled at the approaching dog which immexiately turned on its heels and fled.

I was walking my 9mth old Akita early one morning and had a stag hound and Staffordshire bull terrier attack us. My dog grabbed the stag, I yelled and booted the staffy, it came straight back for another. By that time the stag was high tailing it so the staffy decided to follow. Not a pleasant experience and I’m glad it wasn’t a woman or child with a small dog.

We’re in total agreement with Joel. All he says on dog training is 100% reliable and it works . . . . especially with our own dogs. A strange attacking strange dog coming at us fast from out of nowhere, that’s a whole ‘nother ball game folks. The only time my loud shout at an aggressive dog didn’t work for me was a large pitbull mastiff type monster that was hellbent on attacking me in our own yard late at night, when I interrupted it with my loud shout to stop it from trying to dig under the farmhouse to kill our pet cat. That 115 lb. invading beast came out from under the house looking different directions trying to find me. I shouted again for it to get out of here. That resulted it it making a silent charge straight for me, and had I not stopped it just a few feet from reaching me, it surely would have ripped my throat out. God helped save my life that night. I had no pepper spray and it probably wouldn’t have worked on this particular situation. So Joel you’re right, pepper spray is better than nothing, that’s for sure. An already enraged beast may not be phased by the pepper spray. That dog’s partner in trying to kill our cat came out from under our farmhouse moments later, and my warning shout at this same sized shepherd mix DID made it turn tail and run.

Great video, it's very interesting the way you teach. New subscriber. However on dog running up to your dog off lead in an aggressive manner use pepper spray here in the UK pepper spray is illegal. So would be great if you could give an alternative method either by reply or KZbin video. I actually avoid parks where people take there dogs because my previous dog got attacked twice. Because of irresponsible dog owners not having control of there dog makes my blood boil.

Very interesting for the what to do when a dog runs towards you pepper spray is illegal in Canada to have so I guess it would have to be a little can of hairspray a lot of dogs on my street if they're not on the flexi leash going nuts they're running free and charging people that are trying to walk their dog so it's difficult to walk my dog cuz he's an Alaskan Malamute and he weighs 140

People who let their dogs off leash at leashed parks or in crowded neighborhoods without having an absolutely ironclad recall are the wooorst. I had a Malamute who loved other dogs but did NOT like dogs charging her while she was on the leash. Luckily she was much bigger than most at 110 lbs so she could roll them pretty easily and handle business if it came to that, but I had to be very vigilant about keeping her socialized or those incidents would’ve made her more and more dog reactive. The worst seemed to be golden retriever owners for some reason, those were always off leash!

My malamute had a fear of loud noises after a super explosive thunderclap during a storm when he was a puppy. He went virtually deaf over the past couple years so he isnt as fearful. But he was relatively well behaved despite the fireworks we had in our old place. We now live in suburbs arizona where fireworks are banned so we dont have to worry about it anymore ^^

A few years ago I was mindlessly walking my puggle (RIP), and an off leash German Shepard runs up on us from behind. I don't even know the dog is there until my dog is attacking him. Without thinking, I make like I'm back in high school wrestling and headlock and pin the German Shepard. Then I get a bystander to take the German Shepard away. I later heard that the owner came looking for him about 10 minutes later. My current dog is much bigger and younger, so I've become motivated to do some proper dog training. (Yes I should have done that with the puggle too, but it didn't happen.)

My whole neighborhood was basically terrorized into staying indoors and not walking our dogs because this one neighbor had 2 aggressive mastiffs they kept in the backyard that would constantly get loose. They’ve cornered people who had to jump on top of their car in the garage for protection, tried to get into houses, climb people’s fences to get to their dogs, and even brutally killed 2 small dogs, one of which was my neighbor’s old, harmless corgi mix who was sleeping near the front door of his favorite neighbor’s who happened to be out of town. Killed him in the yard, ripped to shreds. Animal control was called but but they refused to come out since the person who called didn’t know who the dogs belonged to. Wouldn’t even come get the body of the dead dog b/c they didn’t have permission to enter the person’s yard who wasn’t home to get it. By then the dogs went back home and the owners locked them up in the garage for a few days b/c they surely saw the blood on their faces and didn’t want to get caught. And the neighbor who had the dog killed on their property went and told them what happened but all they really claimed was that “they were good dogs”. When neighbors found out what happened they were warning others not to go down the street they lived on. And the neighbors with the mastiffs had the nerve to threaten suing b/c people had identified their house as the one with the dogs and said it was “harassment.” Animal control apparently KNEW the dogs BY NAME they’d been called in so many times, yet they gave them back each time. HOA finally threatened them to get rid of the dogs by a certain amount of time before getting fined by selling them to someone else. But they only got rid of one. I heard they’re even trying to get the other one back now. It’s sickening how irresponsible the owners are and how calloused they are to the people who lost pets b/c of their lack of training and proper gating. Sickening how the HOA is so quick to threaten to fine someone for not cutting their bushes compared to having killer dogs on the loose, and sickening how Animal Control did squat to fix any of it all these years despite knowing these dogs had killed. One day they’re gonna get someone’s kid, and it won’t be pretty. I’m in my twenties, scrawny at 120 pounds, and my dog is only 30, I can only imagine what 2 mastiffs could do to either of us if they found us, let alone someone’s kid. In all honesty I think any dog like that should be put down, but I’ll keep the pepper spray and air horn ideas in mind!
