As a person who is currently homeless, while also working 48 hrs/week in a Walmart, and am actually in the process of getting my sh!t together: 1) you cannot get a PO box while homeless; the post office requires a home address for anyone registering a PO box. Best you can do is sign up for General Delivery service. 2) I've been working for 2 months now, and it is harder than you might imagine to eat enough calories while staying under 600/month on food with no place to store and prepare food. Especially when you're on your feet all day, both at and off work. 3) also, getting a vehicle first is never an option, actually. You must have a physical address to register the vehicle and sign up for insurance. Just things I wanted to point out. I am gonna keep grinding and am hoping to find a room to rent by next month. I already had a phone before I started working and I stay very clean.

Keep kicking ass man! Good on you. Keep it up and soon you'll be in a much more stable place since you've built up awesome skills. I've been in some low places in life and personally one of the worst things that kept me back in the past was my victim mindset. It's weird when I realized that the world wasn't out to get me, it sure as shit wasn't there to help me out much, but in reality it's usually more indifferent to you and me. This really helped me learn to capitalize on things that helped me and to avoid those things that were traps and would only end up hurting me. Even one day my poor ass ended up owning a home! (Well the bank owns most of it ) but comeon! I even live in an expensive ass state. Now I got an edge on life because of the "lower" standards I have. I don't respect needlessly expensive or fancy shit. I can make due with a hell of a lot less then your average guy and don't mind renting out rooms in my house to entirely pay my mortgage and then some. Keep it up man, once that snowball starts rolling it just gets bigger and easier every step.

600 a month for food seems incredibly high. Thats $20 a person a day. Growing up we were never homeless, but we were scraping by, our goal was $10 for the both of us (me and my mom) per day and we never went hungry. and today you can get 2000 calories for exactly $7 at mcdonalds with the app deals and value menu (buy one get one free mcdouble and buy one get one a dollar mcchicken)

You could get cans of food and keep it in your locker at work. Thats what i did i bought a 50 cent bowl from walmart while in my break and bought about 5-6 cans of soup and ravioli for about .60 a can and kept that in my locker i would show up early and eat one for breakfast and stay late and eat one for dinner along with my lunch. Personnel should be able to get you a locker and the break room has a microwave and you dont need to be at work to use it.

One thing that helped me out was working at a hotel. Idk if they're all like this but my hotel would cook for you for your lunch so they could keep you working as long as possible. This worked for me since I couldn't afford food. They also had employee bathrooms away from the guests so I could freshen up. On top of that they had a nice employee lounge that was open 24/7 since a hotel is always open. I would leave after my shift for a couple hours and then crash there at night. That job was a blessing. Wish anyone luck going through homelessness! You can make it

Find local work you're willing to walk to instead of buying a car. Get housing first and use transport systems (or get a bike) to save money. Plus, you can't get pulled over by a cop for no reason, if you're riding the bus. Also tags, insurance, monthly payments, maintenance, etc.

@@TheYellowSignal a car isn't necessary, the problem is that most of the time, the decent paying jobs that can actually help your situation will require a car to get to. Walling or biking is way better and a good way to save money, but most of the jobs I've had that are within walking distance actually didn't pay enough for you to afford rent, you would need at least 2 jobs.

One thing you did forget to mention is if you’re a 17-year-old and your parents keep on saying when you turn 18 you’re getting kicked out make sure you get all the documents you need to set up your life to be successful Social Security number and your birth certificateand any other documents that you think would help but those two are the main ones because once you lose them it’s really hard to get them back. It is quite impossible to do it.

A long time ago in america the Multigenerational home meant that the elderly did not go to retirement homes because the young took care of them, and the elderly could watch the children. All the money stayed in the family, instead of being given to landlords. The fact that your family is kicking you out(providing that you are willing to pull your weight) means several things: 1. Your family unit is dysfunctional. 2. When your parents get older, or begin to decline, it really is not your problem since you were pushed out. You don't have to worry about driving them to their appointments, helping them with mobility, making sure they take the right pills on time, because "tough love, you are on your own" goes both ways. 3. You are likely to be on your own for an extended period of time, you will want to build social connections outside of the workplace. 4. If you have siblings expect to fight over the estate when they have passed away, and get nothing. If you do not have siblings, expect long term care to eat their estate, and you will still probably inherit nothing. I personally would not mind children staying past 18, so long as they have a job and are pulling their own weight if they are able.

Drug withdrawal can be life threatening. Do not quit harder substances cold turkey. I almost died of a heart attack when quitting xanax and had horrible pain and hallucinations for about 3 weeks. Im no longer homeless now but it was rough I live in Alaska so most of the money I got went to fuel for my heater. Depending on the type of heat itl cost about $1.75/hr to heat a small tent. Same goes for a car. Panhandling and begging are heavily cracked down on in the city I live in. What i ended up doing is getting some tobacco and papers and sold rollies for 25cents each. Dont forget $15bucks to get a new ID. Great video nonetheless. I appreciate you talking frankly about the subject. Cheers!

If there is a homeless aid center near you (basically a step down from a shelter), use the services they provide. Sometimes they give out food and clothes and some will also allow you to shower and may even handle mail for you. If this is the case, you may be able to use this place as an address to sign up for benefits, which will vary from state to state but it is better than nothing. I was homeless for about 6 months and a place like this is a lifesaver. Also, if you can't get a phone or you don't have a place to get one on the cheap, see if your town has a library and if so, see if they have computers that you can use. Some will allow you to use their computers without a library card. And this also can be a huge asset.

You only gotta have a license to live in your car if you're in a city where the cops got the automatic plate readers, cause they'll nab you for bad tags or no insurance or anything like that REAL quick. If you're in a city where the police budget isn't higher than the education one, you can pretty much drive anything you want as long as you don't do anything stupid enough to get pulled over. Just make sure you stick to big-box-store parking lots for sleeping, those are private property and they usually turn a blind eye, versus street parking where you're in the cops' domain and they can either tow you to impound for bad tags, or throw you in the holding tank for violation of a "no sleeping in vehicles" ordnance. Also, most fast food places got free refills on drink cups and nobody's paid enough to give a shit, so for easy calories to keep you going, just grab a cup outta the trash and put a fresh straw in it cause it's literally free real estate. Worth noting, do NOT go to shelters, they are absolutely hot garbage ranging from "actively trying to keep you homeless" to "religious nutjobs" to "you literally cannot have possessions". What you really want is a nice piece of secluded land like a drainage easement or a hedgerow that's outta the public view, a $20 Walmart tent or a free-with-purchase Harbor Freight tarp, and a decent frame pack. Yeah, the backpack's gonna be expensive, but your back will thank you and it'll carry as much stuff as a suitcase while being harder to steal or destroy. Acquire a sleeping bag and a Therm-A-Rest (way less fragile and better long-term than a regular air mattress, and smaller) and one of those Zippo hand warmers, those things in a sleeping bag can keep your whole self warm and toasty for 8 hours. Make sure you shoplift some spray paint so you can camouflage your hideout, a bright blue tarp sticks out like a sore thumb but a little O.D. Green, dark brown, and Coyote Tan with some leaves and onion-bag netting for stencil patterns makes it disappear quite well. As for transportation, if you want it for free and don't mind committing crimes for it, there's no shortage of forgotten bikes on college campuses that haven't moved since the start of the semester, that are brand new, and secured by locks that can be decoded with no tools. Just look for the pollen grime outline around the wheels and the rusted-solid chain. Nobody's gonna miss it and the campus cops are gonna cut em off the rack in 6 months anyway.

That's what AirBNBs are for, just look em up on a library computer and give em that address. Nobody's living there during the week and the owners never even check the mail, so if you need to actually provide PROOF of address you can sign up for some dumb mailing list or a catalog or something to get sent there. You can also try abandoned houses but sometimes they'll show up in the system, or sometimes the mail service will have already been cut off there, but AirBNBs are always reliable. Also a great place for short term squatting, cause you can see the availability online and you know that any days they're available, there's nobody around, and they always use those cheap doorknob lockboxes for the keys that are super easy to decode. Just make sure you clean up after yourself and GTFO when there's a booking and you basically get a whole house on weekdays.

If you are 18 you should already have a phone so you dont need $90 a month for a plan. Just get a sim only plan and use your current phone. Its way cheaper.

I wish I could shop at Walmart and just pick up something that fits without there being a problem 😅 I’m so small I gotta buy kids clothes, but my booty is thicc so I can’t fit the pants, and I end up having to wear dresses made for children if I gotta pick up something from the store and don’t have time to alter it. If I don’t buy adult clothes then alter them myself, I end up looking like a middle schooler going to temple. Not a good interview look. If you’re like me, the laundromat is your friend when you’re homeless. If you got just one outfit, find an old lady and ask if you can toss your interview outfit in with her stuff. It’s a good way to make friends

Damn, literally a month after i turned 18 i graduated high school and about four days after graduation my mother moved and left me all alone in an apartment with rent paid for one month. I never had a job yet at that point, so i ended up living in my uncles shed on a mattress and got a job in a factory.

Gotta learn how to live homeless too especially if your a lower class (in terms of wealth) citizen. That being said you do want an apartment or a house but I believe that learning how to live homeless is an essential tool for people who live with lower income.

I live out in a rural area so if I found my self homeless food would be the hardest thing. Oddly enough though shelter would be easy, to start I have a tent, but being in the woods it would only take 2 to 3 weeks to build a shack from logs and stuff. Job would be impossible at first but if I trap, fish, and hunt I'll have food. So I could probably trade for useful things like solar panels and find one of thoes free RVs for an inverter, boom power. I can wash in a creak or boil water for cleaning as well as drinking. Lastly, would be doing odd farm jobs until I could afford a car. After that smooth sailing.

Ya know most of this stuff is useful advice, but there's a bit of a big one. Getting on food stamps. When I was homeless, food costs were like 300 a month. You'll definitely not want to pay that out of pocket.

I went homeless over Covid. 1. Buy a tent. Or borrow one. Or steal one. 2. Hit that local food bank. Yeah, it's like a walk of shame, but nobody there cares. That's what it's there for. 3. Save some soda bottles, and find a place where you can fill them with water for free. 4. If you're somewhere you can make a camp fire, do it. Otherwise, buy a cheap camp gas burner and a couple bottles of fuel. 5. STAY AWAY FROM HOMELESS SHELTERS. Hit them up if you need a free meal or a shower, but DO NOT sleep there. You'll get rolled in your sleep and have your stuff stolen, or you'll end up with a drug/alcohol addiction you didn't have. 6. Libraries are your friend. Get a book, it'll help you pass time. 7. Be careful whom you befriend. There's a lot of good people out there, but there's also a buttload of scumbags who will take advantage of you.

So many places have free wifi, you can avoid the data package on the phone, dropping the price down for around $30/mo for unlimited calls and text - you're probably gonna be chilling in these exact locations (McDonalds, Starbucks, etc.) to charge your phone anyway. Some locations will drop a data limit on their wifi but you can legit just log in and out when it's used, that extra $60/mo can make the world of difference, tbh I don't even have unlimited data on my personal phone and I own my place (uhh, the BANK does fr but let's not get into that)

Nah, you don’t go buy food from fast food lol even the value menu is too damn expensive. If you’re homeless you’re better off getting the cheapest little portable burner and a few pots and pans. All of which can probably be found at a thrift store for $15 or less. Buy some rice, ramen, cheap bread, etc. whatever you can get to last you and long as possible

Over 15, years of constant up to 12 hours a day effort....and i finally got a full time minimum wage job as a janitor for low income housing! It only took half my damn life to get one place to give me a real full time job. If you're struggling, maybe leave America. Also the last year out of all US new hires every job in the entire country, only 6% were white people probably at least half of those were women. With probably 3% or less of a chance to be hired im thinking about leaving America while i still have this job

This works in the USA yeah. But here were I'm from you A. Can't beg for money on the street. B. It's illegal to be homeless. So basically state gives you money. When you are living on your own with basic income subsidy. And living with rent they also give rent subsidy. And here comes my first issue with this. Let's say that you have rent of 500$ a month. You can only get 310$ of rent subsidy for the month but it's registered as income so your basic income subsidy goes down. So if you get around 800$ -20% holding tax. Yes that too is a issue. - 310$ you can see that yeah. Not much money but you can just sit on your ass. But then if you get a job. And you do not fill out the bureaucratic papers correctly. You'll have to pay that months money back or multiple months of income back. So most young people here just don't work and drink and too drugs because it's hard to start going to a job if you have fear of loosing the little money you have or getting a strike so you won't have any financial support for a year or you get a job and find out you have less money to spend after taxes than just living of welfare. I have personally been unemployed for the past 7 years now because I have low education. Plus I'd only have few hundred € to spend after taxes when I do the math of taxes and here I can't get a tank full of gas with 50€. So I stay in this system until it's fixed that I have more money if I work than just staying at home I absolutely hate this but what better can you do.
