One of our Bettas was a tail biter. My daughter started playing with him, training him to swim through a hoop and it helped. We also got him a few mystery snails during this time. He never bothered them and he seemed to like the company of one in particular. I know that sounds strange. We also moved him from a 29 gallon tall to a five gallon and he seems more chill, no more surfing the glass. He's an old man now who no longer bites his tail but lounges around on his plants. 👍

I was gone from my house for about a day and a half and when I got home tonight, I was shocked to see my bettas tail Practically emaciated. He likes to hide up behind the filer…his tail sits up against it… could it be from the filter or from stress of being alone that long? Being up by the filter isn’t anything new for him so that’s why I don’t think it’s from the filter. TIA

Great video! This is why my first long finned betta will be my last, I got a gorgeous full moon betta and he's now a beautiful dark blue and red coloration. Sadly, shortly after he grew accustomed to his new home, he began nipping. I changed decor, did salt dips, got a new filter, tried almond leaves, everything possible before downsizing him from 5.5 to 2.5 gallons and just letting him have his way. He nips himself less now, but I have a feeling his fins are just too heavy for him as he even has some broken rays now. I lend it to bad genetics, exotic animal breeders just don't hold themselves accountable unfortunately.

I've kept betta's for eight years and my super delta Kepler is my first tail biter. I do the API stress coat, almond leaves, planted tank, changing decor, food variation and after food, I remove the barrier between Kepler and Freddie's tanks for them to play for a bit.... and none of those things worked. His tail grows back and overnight it will be gone. I did a salt treatment once when it was bad, but I just keep the tank clean and not worry about it anymore. He doesn't seem stressed to me... he isn't shy or hiding. Maybe he is just a wilful little bugger! lol

great video, I tried enriching my Betta with a dwarf frog, but my once busy fish became timid. the frog would stand up to look for the fish and lunge at him. And my kuhli s use to be out all the time . I took him out today, and the tank seems less stressed . He's in a temporary 2.5 with my more aggressive rescue, working on twisting my wife's arm for another ten gallon , if she wants to keep him ( he is really neat , and I trained him to target feed)

I've owned my veil tail Betta about a month, 2-weeks ago we noticed his tail looked torn, we changed all plastic plants to silk but the tearing continued. Being confused with fin rot we started testing the water which showed high ammonia, we're lowering that atm with water changes. Now the past 2-days I've caught him (several times) chasing/biting his tail. He uses the glass on the tank or rocks inside to get leverage and snap at it. Now we're unsure whether its fin rot, just tail biting or biting his tail because of fin rot. I'm in the same room with him all day and haven't seen him biting before. Regardless his tail is a real mess and pretty evenly torn and tattered.

On the video you made about honey gouramis on chris' channel, you said that you got dwarf gouramis but they were too aggressive. Thats probably because you got a male red flame, most others do fine and are peaceful. And when you said there are 3 types, there is actually 1 more. It has a black head, deep orange body and bright yellow dorsal fin like the male that you have ( and i have in my profile picture :-). ) Ive been wanting them for a while but theyre really hard to get a hold of.

My male started nipping his fins when his tank got damaged and I had to put him in a very small tank temporarily then a new one with a light that didn't have adjustable brightness. Lost most of my plants and it was just nuts. Caught him biting his fins which already have a very frilly edge, he's very aggressive (he kills anything put in with him) and I guess he thought his fins were something to chase because he was stressed. Different light and completely redid the tank (more live plants, some driftwood, those leaves, and a leaf hammock) and he's almost completely healed now and swimming around happy as can be.

Every time I see a betta with fin rot it reminds me of my aunt's betta Red. Poor guy was in a small cricket carrier with no heat, filter, and weekly water change. I told my aunt I would give her a bigger tank and she said she didn't want something big because it would be to hard to clean by herself. When I was finally getting to her, my other aunt came to visit her to and said she had one in a vase and he lived for years. I got mad and said you try living in only one room for years and see how it feels. She just said I was over reacting and spoiled my pets. So what I did with visited my aunt with my betta and took my smallest tank I used for growing plants. It was only one gallon so still to small for my liking. I also took my filter and told her not to change the cartridge because it was cycled already. It was also half full because I wanted to make sure he didn't die and she could blame me. The deal I made was if she didn't like it I would take it back. But I f she likes it, she could keep it. When I saw him last his tail was growing back. Plus my aunt said it's easier to clean because the filter. It's specifically made for bettas and can supposedly clean up to 10 gallon tanks. But has very little current, so he won't get stressed out. I'm going to try to upgrade it again, I found a used tank that is 5 gallons with a light. Hopefully she takes it, it even came with an LED heater. Hopefully she takes it.

@@_glint yes, the filter I gave her broke and she had to get a new one. It was to big for the tank, so asked if I still have the other tank. I told her that it broke but I had a 10 gallon with a lid. She took it and he is so much better. I also sneak him some freeze dried bloodworms whenever I visit. He gets as happy as my fish when I give them frozen brine shrimp. My fish get that for spacial occasions. I want to give him some as a late Christmas present tomorrow. But not sure if I would be able to. But his fin is completely healed, even without medication. It was just the bad water quality.
@_glint
@_glint 3 жыл бұрын
@@lahormiga1989 That's great! My betta fishes have been tail biting each other so I've seperated them and they're healing too! Do you nned to soak bloodwormsin water before you feed them or do you give them normally? I usually soak a worm and snap it in half otherwise my betta fishes will peck it and then leave it alone
@lahormiga1989
@lahormiga1989 3 жыл бұрын
@@_glint I completely melt them in water. Plus I have 3 tanks that I feed. My smallest is a 15 gallon with one male betta, the second is a 50 with a bunch of neon, black neon, and glowlight tetras, guppies, and 1 female betta. The last one is a 150 that I had to get because someone was moving out and needed to re-home her fish. She gave me the 50 gallon with 2 bichirs, 1 common pleco, 1 brussel nose pleco, and a few corydoras. The common pleco was sucking on the albino bichir's slime coat almost killing him. We got the 150 so they would have more room to run away. I also medicated it to help him heal faster. My albino is ok now, and the female would help him by getting the pleco to chase her while he swam away. The pleco is doesn't chase them anymore either, especially because I only have decorations on one side of the tank. I think he felt crowded in such a small tank. I need a bigger tank, but will need to move out first. The lady I got the fish didn't even know want kind of fish they were. She called the pleco an "algae eater", the brussel nose an "alien looking fish" the bichirs "eels" and the only ones she got right where the "catfish" or cory cats. It took me a month to find out what the bichirs were because I've never seen them before. I knew what everything else was, and knew the tank was to small for the pleco. A pleco needs a 150 and a bichir needs 50. So that's 250, she said she had a fever other fish that died and she didn't know why before I got them. Pet stores need to start educating people before they sell them fish, because it's obvious people aren't doing there homework. They also need to start updating there pet care knowledge, my aunt said the pet store said it was ok to keep the betta in that way. The big tank wasn't even cycled before she put fish in it, a lot of fish died because of that. The pet store told her she needed to just temperature acclimate them. Not all the fish died, and the ones that lived are doing very good. But that could have been avoided by either cycling the tank or buying live bacteria.

My daughters Beta looked beautiful on Tuesday before we brought him and her home for Thanksgiving from University. She put him in the cup we got him from at the pet store, she uses that when she changes his tank water. It was a 2 & 1/2 hour drive home and as soon as we got home she set his tank back up and put him in. Then today (Thursday) his fins are all bitten up. I think he maybe stressed. His name is Teach (after Black Beard the pirate). My daughter is actually really sick with the flu (awful timing for her but I’m thankful she’s home and I can care for her) so I’ve been feeding my Grandfish. I feed him exactly how she does and the same amount. Could he be upset that it’s me and not her. He lives in her dorm room so it’s very quiet and only her and her roommate. At home there are 6 of us moving about. Should we move his tank to a quieter room? He’s in our kitchen. He has all the same things in his tank that he does when he’s at the University with her. I feel bad because his fins were so pretty and now they look awful! I noticed yesterday they were looking bitten but today I could for sure tell he’s been biting them. Next question, if it’s stress should she just leave him with me to care for when she goes back to University. She will only be there a week and a half before coming home again for winter break. Would this reduce the stress. So he’s not in the cup again for the drive up then a week and a half later to come back??

I just got a betta a few weeks ago and I have spent so much money and done everything for him. I am always so worried about him being bored, I got him betta leaves and a betta log. I bought colorful ping pong balls and fun treats. He only really reacted to a mirror, which I show him for maybe one or two minutes once every couple of days. I noticed him swimming erratically after a few times of showing him the mirror, so I stopped for the most part. But when I tried again this evening, he started swimming sideways and twitching, along with flaring, and then ripping off giant parts of his tail, piece by piece. I found that isolating him in a small container kept him from continuing to bite, but each time I put him back in his aquarium, he was frantically swimming in spastic motions, continuing to rip his tail. I ordered aquarium salt and those special leaves, and I am trying the bettafix treatment currently. I just am afraid to leave him unattended in his tank because I think he is going to continue to try to hurt himself and I don’t know what I can buy or do to get him to snap out of it. Please help!!

My betta had a small ripped fin for several weeks, so today I decided to move him to a small aquarium to get aquarium salt treatment. (His actual tank has many plants, a snail, and tetra, so I tried to separate them). Wrong move... It's only been like 8 hours, and I found his fin ripped even more (like a looot worse). I feel so bad for my betta. I have been trying to heal his fin for quite a while, but I haven't found the right method. -At first, I used the bacterial infection remedy from imagitarium, but it did not work. I started to think that the ripped is not from a fin rot, that is why the medicine didn't work. -I thought the leaf hammock was the cause of his ripped fin, so I took it out. Nothing changed. -I put almond leaves twice (5-6 leaves for each week for 5 gallon), but not much improvement. Seeing from today, I am sure that he bites his own tail. I feel hopeless at this point. this is my first betta, and I am so confused about what to do. I put him back to his main aquarium and hoping almond leaves can distress him/whatever and makes him healthy again.

My butterscotch is currently dealing with a tail biting problem, I think it’s because he’s in a 0.5 gallon bowl because we’re moving in a few days and packed up his 2.5 gallon tank, hopefully it stops once we put him back in his original tank! The weird thing though is that his brother Fred is in the same size bowl and does not bite his tail.

@rabbitport

your betta is most likely healed (or not) but if you have the same problem heres some tips: It isn't normal for bettas to have white spots, unless its part of the pattern it is, it shouldn't have tiny white spots around its body, thats a sign of White Spot Disease (Or Ich for short), and I learned that the hard way, if you see tiny white spots, start treatment for it before it gets worse. Your betta turning brown and not eating is caused by 3 things: Stress, illness, or poor water quality Ich and a combo of something else And thats it! I know your betta most likely is healed (or not sadly) but if you have a issue like this, heres a mini guide!

@GirlTalksFish
@GirlTalksFish 5 жыл бұрын
Oh no! Sometimes no matter how good of an environment we provide, betta fish can do this out of boredom, neurological issues, etc... no one is quite sure. Check out my video for ideas on how to perhaps provide more stimulation or enrichment for your betta. After a long stint of leaving his tail alone, my betta Soundwave totally chomped off his dorsal fin out of the blue. I've been keeping his tank very clean and his bell well-fed, so it's healing up nicely. Guess old habits can be hard to kick. :P

I have a rosetail that has decided to transform himself into a crowntail. Ive caught him in the act several times and he actually has got his anal fin, top fin and tail and i have no idea how he is so flexible. Never had this problem for 6months and now he is doing it all the time. Not sure what to do but im pretty sure all the trauma has caused a secondary infection whether that be fungal or bacterial. Ive done salt, frequent water changes and also have some antibiotics that i may use if in dire straights. He is a fighter and literally came back fron the brink of death after i purchased him with velvet last year. Sure hope i dont lose him to something as silly as tail biting that ultimately turned into fin rot because he will just not leave certain areas alone. Plus once chunks are missing, it makes the rays so much weaker and more prone to breaking on even the most delicate decor. I reallly appreciate the informative video and will surely try some of these things though im not sure how much good it will do considering he has his own tank with betta leafs,log, and live plants. He didnt start this until one day he noticed a new female id purchased and every since then ive kept him from being able to see her but i really wonder if thats what set him off or if he dwells on it because he has always had a strong enough body&form to support his massive,beautiful fins. However i hear its so very common in rosetails and really any long finned bettas but especially rosetails as they are known to have the heavy fullest finnage of all the bettas and sometimes it wieghs them down
@GirlTalksFish
@GirlTalksFish 5 жыл бұрын
Aw man, that really stinks, especially with such a beautiful rosetail. The animal behaviorist that my information came from really recommended more active stimulation (e.g., frequent interaction with the owner, training exercises with positive reinforcement) if your betta fish isn't responded to passive stimulation (e.g., plants and interesting decor in the tank). Another idea is to put your betta tank in a high traffic with lots of people or even near the TV so that the betta fish would get visual stimulation anytime you watched TV. Really hope that you're able to help your little guy out. Let me know what happens!
@kes9612
@kes9612 5 жыл бұрын
@@GirlTalksFish yes i sure will and im thinking of trying some exercises and games with him as he usually follows my fingers pretty well and will jump up to it. I think its a mixture of boredom and the fact that i wont put that female in with him as thats when all this started (him seeing her in a tank beside him) but i thought they could use the interaction and get some stimulation from flaring etc. I wish i would have never let him see her now as it started almost immediately after i carded her from him. Im thinking of moving his tank into my bedroom as well as the tv is always on and spend alot mote time in there when home than in living room. Thanks for all the advice and im truly hoping he makes a turnaround soon or else i may have to put him down if he gets really sick and persists with the biting.

@@kes9612 There's no definitive reason why betta fish bite their tails, just hobbyist theories, so don't blame yourself! So good of you to try many new things to help him; will definitely be praying for your rosetail to make a fast recovery.

@@GirlTalksFish yes i keep telling myself that (these things happen despite good husbandry) but then in the back of my mind i wonder if he would have done this regardless or if he truly is that miserable....I just dont want him to suffer and hope these things help. Its definiltey a first for me but i wil do everything i can to help the lil guy 👍 i appreciate your kind words, prayers & advice :) No one ever tells you how pesky these longer finned bettas can be and i think im going to stick with females and plakats from now on lol. Growing up we only had veiltales in about 3different colors, so the many long finned varieties are now quite tempting but ultimately very hard to maintain with some of their quirks and habits 🐟
