great video! I will add that this procedure does work for brake glaze, usually caused by riders dragging a brake during a long decent, overheating it. But this will not work if the brake is contaminated by something, like chain lube, brake fluid or spray on suncreen. The ablative material is sintered, which is porous; any contaminant on the pad surface will wick through the full thickness to the backing plate; if its bad, no amount of sanding, torching or boiling will ever get it out. I can usually save the rotor with rubbing alcohol.

if this grease contamination occurs, is the disk also permanently damaged or can it be cleaned and used with a fresh set of pads and work fine?

@@szymonzak6681 You can most likely use a de-greaser like you would use on your chain on the rotors to remove any grease you got on them.

How can you tell if it’s not bedded in correctly vs contamination ?
@mikemtbs13 күн бұрын
@swizzeyyy you have to look at the brake pads. Think like looking for oil. Everything else burns off.

And thanks for mentioning the need to bed in the brakes again. Otherwise you’ll have to do it all again!

Last winter I had a few snowy rides where the rotors would start squealing. Sanding lightly and cleaning with alcohol did nothing. However cleaning the rotors with acetone (nail polish remover) fixed it immediately.

If you've gone the full bifta and managed to contaminate your pads, you'll need to preface your steps by submerging pads and rotors in isopropyl alcohol before doing the abrasion. Sometimes, that alone might not work, so I put it over a gas hob until all the alcohol and entrained oils burns off. I know most places suggest you replace pads and rotors, but nobody in the right mind has £100 to burn on a set.
