How To Stop Cats From Chewing on Wires - Safe and Effective!

Here are some answers to a few common questions: How often should I do this? - We've found that doing this about once a month is enough, although you can do it slightly more often if you feel like your cat is extra stubborn. OMG this is unsafe! - Your cat will never get enough in their system to do harm. We're talking about a micro fraction of whatever is left after the soap dries up on the cord. Unless your cat is licking the cables clean and then drinking from the bottle, you're probably fine. This doesn't work for MY cat! - This does seem to work for MOST cats, but there are always exceptions. If this isn't working for you, try to protect your wires with something called split loom tubing. Look it up. my cat has chewed through 3 phone charging USB cords (same as one in the video) and has chewed through at least 10 sets of ear buds. He does it while I'm sleeping. He's so smart, little stinker lol. I've caught him digging under my pillows while I'm sleeping, he knows that's where I hide the wires while I sleep. I've caught him creeping through my bed in super stealth mode lol, and just sitting there in my bed staring at me as if he's checking to make sure I'm in a deep sleep. He's such a little shit lol. It's as hilarious as it is nerve wracking and dangerous...his process of obtaining wires to chew is what's funny, not the actual chewing of them. Can't wait to try this method to see if it works, woke up this morning to my new fav pair of earbuds chewed through.

Absolute legend!!!!! You've saved me a lot of wires and time :) I squeezed an orange into a bowl, mixed it with a lot of dish soap & soaked an old sock in it and applied it generously to every wire in the house. I baked at around 180 degrees after stuffing with a shot of whiskey and a few fresh vegetables like broccoli and fresh bell peppers shortly after plucking leftover hairs. I seasoned it with a little salt & pepper and now I have a delicious meal as well as a cat that doesn't chews wires any more! 10/10 a new family recipe

My cat has started chewing again after months of not chewing. She's chewing cords in half now. I'm at my wits end. None of this works for us. Soap, chili powder, citrus scented lysol, cat off spray, apple cider vinegar, braided wires, scruffing, time outs. I swear my cat is broken. She plays fetch, sleeps beside her cat bed, doesn't eat treats, doesn't like catnip, sticks her nose up at chicken and fish, goes full devil mode around other cats and uses the door frame and surrounding walls as scratching posts despite having a scratching post. Thanks for posting and sharing. Sure enough it sure worked by golly! That explains why my receiver kept shutting off by itself. Didn't realize one of the speaker wires was completely cut in two from the rear of the speaker. I thought my stereo receiver was already taking a crap on me. Already, my cats don't even go NEAR the speaker wires area now since I slapped soap on them. My living room may smell like Dawn now but rather that than re-wiring again. 👍👍 Thanks cats!!!

A few years ago, manufacturers of 12/2 and 14/2 electrical supply cable began including a form of corn syrup in the composition of the rubber insulation of the cable. That's right, corn syrup. Almost immediately, electricians noticed a significant increase in wires damaged by rats and other pests. I wonder if this has also happened to the manufacture of other cables.

I'm on oxygen. My one year old orange tabby has been chewing my oxygen tubing completely in half 3 to 4 times a week, after i go to sleep......my son had told me about this...putting dish detergent on the tubing ......so tonight after catching him chewing again, i got up at 2am and grabbed the Dawn and a cloth and went to work..i repeated the step 4x.....now it's dry, i'm connecting it back to my oxygen machine and going to sleep.....hopefully it will work......i need to breathe and can't have an endless supplies of tubing on hand.....

We purchased a VERY expensive electric bed, split king with power head and foot. After the installers left, I looked under the bed and noticed a ZILLION F.....ing hanging wires. one of our cats chewed through a thick 12,000BTU air condition cord, so I'm thinking we are in trouble here. This bed is way too expensive to take a chance. I surrounded the bed under the mattress and frame with wood. That should work, accept when you raise the head or feet of the bed they can get under the bed anyway. I can just see flattening the bed and then coming home hours later to find that he cat or cats got stuck under the bed. Not hurt, because there is lots of clearance, I just mean hanging out under there. This means having to check under the bed before we leave the house every time to make sure there aren't any brats under the bed. So now I have another thought other then dish soap on a bunch of wires. Im thinking of getting that clear plastic sheet they sell in Joann's fabrics and covering the underside of the bed somehow so they can't get to the wires. Anyway, good luck. These creatures are wonderful loving companions, but they have some really f.....ed up habits that are maddening.

If you have a wire you can sacrifice. Maybe some spare or damaged wired, I suggest you apply the soap and put it somewhere they can get it. Just to see how it works. I could definitely see them using that plastic sheet for clawing.

I just tried Dawn soap he came over after I applied it by using it on my fingers and licked it off my fingers soooo I went to the fridge grabbed a lemon put juice over the soap he doesn't seem interested in licking my fingers, but i wouldn't put it past him!

I have 4 cats. One chews the coaxial and HDMI cables from behind the tv and another chews the phone chargers on the night stands. NONE of them chew the USB TOWER we have on the island which holds 7 wires at all times for all of our laptops, phones and other electronics. Just put soap on all my wires. Tested this method with a dummy cable. The kitty started playing with the cable, but once she got that taste in her mouth, she made a face like she just sniffed the most rancid ass. Did not like the cable any longer. Let's see how this does in the long run!

You could soap the end as long as you're careful not to soap the metal contacts (or the surface where they come out of) and you let it dry completely before using it. Try that at your own risk, of course, but I personally don't see why it wouldn't work. As far as climbing, the only thing I might suggest is to get him a cat tree or something he can climb on and discourage him from climbing on the wrong stuff. Maybe someone else reading this who has experience with this problem can help.

I tried applying hand moisturiser to my wires and it didn't go pretty well because my cat started licking the wires and then after five minutes she started chewing the wires even more than she used to

I'd probably reapply once every couple weeks. We used to apply this monthly and that works for the most part but if you have a cat who's really stubborn then bi-weekly is better.

I haven't tried it on kittens myself but I don't know why it wouldn't. You could get a wire or string that's not being used and test it. Apply some soap and put it where they can get it, see what they do, if you aren't sure.

I don't know, I haven't seen any evidence personally that this is something they'll grow out of, although it's possible. Our cats don't try it anymore but that's because we kept the cords treated like I show in this video for a good long while. They just gave up trying because of that.

Do you think this would work for dogs? I just got my puppy and she is trying to bite at every single cord in my room. I cant even trust her to be outside of the cage at night when I'm sleeping because I know all of my cords would be ruined

I'm not sure. I think something like hot sauce may work a little better with dogs. If you have a cable that's a spare or already damaged beyond repair you could soap it up as shown in the video, leave it where she could get it and see if it deters her. We've had dogs that were destructive, it tends to be excess energy. We had a dog practically destroy a couch before I learned this. Started walking her and she stopped fairly quickly. Yours might be a bit too small for walks, though. I highly recommend looking up Cesar Milan (the dog whisperer) as everything I've tried that he's shown has worked well and is all safe and humane. But, yeah. You can try the soap on a cable that is already busted, but as I said I think hot sauce might be a safer bet.

My daughter's cat has cost me so many USB charging cables . He stopped for a while, until now he started again and got my phone cord and it's replacement sometimes since yesterday. I just woke to see the cable chewed. I'm waiting for the pussy to bite through a lamp cord, but no such luck. Although, seriously, I'm afraid if he does he'll blow up and burn the house down, then I'll be really pissed. I thought by yelling and stomping my feet at my daughter and making her buy me new cables would change the cat's bad manners, but No. My daughters and wife says he's a nervous cat, which makes him want to chew cords (go figure), so they've been buying him "nervous cat collars" (I guess that what the collar is called), but when the collar wears out, he'll start again. I think I'll give the soap method a try on the cables, before I toss my daughter into the yard with her fkn cat.
