I’ll be 3 years sober in a month. I quit literally overnight. Drugs of all kinds, cigarettes, alcohol. It was easy because I truly wanted to. It’s only hard if you don’t truly want to. I just got tired of the bondage. The feelings you get from drugs and alcohol are so temporary and you end up paying dearly on the back end. I would just rather be sober. It’s not as bad as your brain tells you it is.

"When you are dependent on alcohol it is like a normal person needing water." THIS. Absolutely true. This is the part non-addicted people probably cannot quite fathom. When you are addicted to alcohol it really does often feel you simply "won't make it" if you cannot drink. great observation Katie

I have heard that after awhile and with age, most people outgrow drinking or the need to drink or the taste for alcohol. It doesn't have much affect after awhile.
@19Jetta4 жыл бұрын
@patten leather maybe for normal drinkers but for the addicted drinker it is exactly the opposite. Your tolerance goes up and you need progressively more to get that same level of relaxation or whatever you are going for. Keep in mind, most long-term problem drinkers are not "party-ers." They drink for relief from anxiety, physical pain and insomnia.
@greglinski22084 жыл бұрын
19Jetta that sentence was the most relatable thing I've ever heard. All my family tell me is 'just stop, it's ruining your life and killing you'. Nobody understands unless they've been in the situation that it's a need. I have vodka for breakfast like they have cereal. I don't do it because I think it'll be a tasty breakfast, it's because somewhere along the line I became so dependent that I couldn't leave the house without a fix. I take it to work in case my withdrawals get too bad and I collapse with a seizure.
@thomasd.6383 жыл бұрын
I can totally relate with this, it's as if your body is out of oxygen. AA and rehab may work for some people, but not me, and the same goes for most alcoholics I know. You may want to try reading Steffon Barkload's stuff, very much like this is takes a gentler but incredibly effective approach.

Congratulations!!!! So happy for you. I was always in great shape and highly athletic my entire life drinking 2-3 beers with dinner per month. 7 years ago I had a severe family loss that threw me into a severe depression and I started drinking heavily. Pretty much drink 1-1 1/2 pints of either straight up whisky or vodka. It was like having an alternate life. I would drink secretly. Hiding all the bottles in my car and dumping them in the trash at the gas station. Funny cause I’m hindsight it wasn’t really secretly as my family and friends could see the change in my behavior. I went from happy to angry which is not my personality. I would pick fights and harp over irrelevant things. I became a functional alcoholic being able to keep life going, did my job well at work and provided for my family. Alcohol destroyed my relationship with my wife. Who hated drinking as a result of her father being an alcoholic. Drinking had consumed me and I became basically a beat up car always running on empty needing fuel to keep going on a daily basis. I would wake up everyday with brain fog, put on about 40 pounds of fat and lost all motivation to be better. I became an empty shell always looking forward for work to be over so I could start drinking. I had enough 6 months ago after I saw someone my age (43) die from liver failure. I also promised it to myself that I need to do it for my kids. Anyways, I went my entire life never interested in alcohol and at the age of 36 took up drinking. I turned into someone that I would joke about never becoming. Anyways sorry for my rant just needed to vent by writing it out. Peace and love to all of you.

here's several suggestions for giving up drinking quickly Try eating food while you are drinking - this cuts down the amount you drink. Take a break from drinking. Keep track of how much you drink, then you know if you are cutting down. Set yourself goals - don't make them too hard at first. Choose 1 or 2 days or every week when you will not drink . Then, try to stop drinking for one week per month.

I cried for about 5 minutes after watching your video. I was unaware that other methods are available to curb/stop drinking. I've had the same PCP for the last 25 years and I'm honestly scared/embarrassed to talk to him about how my desire for alcohol has reached DEFCON 1 levels. With Generalized social anxiety and depression, I felt using alcohol made me feel better (in the beginning) but then became my "solution" since I felt that medication wasn't working. Your honesty and information give me new hope about how to navigate this course without being "that person" who can't drink. Everyone knows that person who says "I don't drink" and they immediately change their behavior, not inviting you places because they think you may feel uncomfortable with others drinking around them. I will check out the resources you've listed to find a specialist who can start me on the path to a healthy and honest relationship with myself and alcohol. Thank you again Katie.

my drinking ramped up to the highest levels in my life during the pandemic. i used to never drink at home alone and was a social (in-person) drinker. but with zoom dances, I found excuses to drink home alone. what’s scary is I don’t get hangovers anymore-which helped limit how much I used drink-and on the heaviest drinking days can drink and drink like 375ml of 100 proof whiskey and like 3 Whiteclaws mixed with 1-2oz of Tequila and a dash of red wine; so upwards of 20 servings of alcohol while averaging ~11 servings daily. Im going to taper over a 1.5 week period. wish me luck! The most consecutive days I haven’t drunk during the pandemic is 2-3 days. My withdrawal symptoms during those rare days of not drinking were mild to moderate that included irritability, strong antsy feelings of cravings to drink, and anxiety

This sounds a lil similar to me. I started becoming a regular drinker at 20 with it gradually increasing, starting with half a bottle of wine to a whole, 1 & a half to 2 bottles and now it's 3. I'm now 30 and I can say that it's ruining my life more so in recent years but I've never been able to quit for longer than a few months. I drink anywhere from 4-6 days a week starting usually at 5pm until like 1am. I have very little motivation to do the most simple things until after noon. I'm bored not drinking, argue in my head debating why I should or shouldn't, should usually wins. My husband was drinking before we met (which was how I got to this point) He is a different type tho, the high functioning in denial kind. He starts drinking beer at 9am, drives to work, drinks at work (12 pack), comes home and passes out, 7 days a week without break. He doesn't think it's a problem for him, just for me 🤨... I miss the days when I wasn't addicted to anything 😞

This does actually work. It worked for me by accident. I got on Suboxone for opiate addiction but was still sneaking alcohol at night. About a week after being on the suboxone which has naloxone in it, I went to have my normal drinking that night and the urge to do so just wasnt there that night. I stopped craving alcohol that very night. I had no clue it was because of my medication. I believe it now because I had stopped taking the suboxone and have gotten bad into alcohol again. I really want to talk to my dr about getting naltrexone.

This....THIS!! Haven't heard anyone emote so much realness and emote a realistic hope. Thank you. I'm a "functional" alcoholic but what sets me apart from MOST groups is that I never drink and have a distaste for alcohol when my mind-set is in a negative state. I have 0% drive to drink when I'm moody, blue, stressed....because I know the next morning it will be 10x worse. I think my body has scripted that for me. On the flip side, I'm a "positive" drinker". When I'm having an amazing day, I get a promotion, someone gives me a compliment, etc. When I'm feeling GOOD....that's my issue. I'm addicted to taking it to the next level and it's through alcohol. Yes, the next morning I deal with the hangover but I've excepted that payment over the years.

I was a major alcoholic for 25 years. I don't mean a few beers. I was a very high functioning alcoholic and the job I had let me travel some pretty cool places for conferences and of course, all the drinks, dinner........free on company reps. It got so bad I was having a few blackouts and was going to quit (yeah right) when I got a alcohol related ticket. Now dwi but I was asleep in my car and they charged me with actual physical control and that's just as bad as a dui...almost. This was enough and my wife was going to leave me and my sister was almost done with me. So I went to AA. AA may be great for some but not for me. Stayed with it for a couple of months and fell off the wagon once and decided that I'd do it on my own. I told my wife and sis what I was going to do but I don't want anyone mentioning it or patting me on the back for doing so good. I don't work that way. Dug into work and increased exercising to a full workout with a goals and schedules. No physical problems like DT's or anything else and I expected it. Now I though about drinking because I was still traveling and was around drinks a bunch. Yep....I would have liked to have one but no I did not. Didn't tell anyone what I was doing but they picked it up as we all travel to the same conferences. My best friend noticed but didn't say a thing. He, who drank as much as me, just quit too. Cool. I was more worried about who the heck I was sober than being a drunk. I thought that I couldn't have fun or know how to act. But once my mind started to hit on all the cylinders that all changed and got better and better till I was me again and having a blast. It takes a while for your mental sober catches up with your physical sober. I can't even tell you how long that was because I never thought about my alcoholism. I just made sure my shoes were tied and nothing was going to trip me up subconsciously. It worked for me but I wired a bit different.

@monitorwerks61234 жыл бұрын
I am not sure if you showed it o him or not but I would suggest a few other things first unless you or your family are in danger. If that is the case contact the police. If you father is not physically violent you are lucky. But you need to be careful. You must also understand that when he is drunk he is not in control of his emotions or thoughts. Please, please, Please!!! understand that NONE of it is you or anyone else fault. Your Dad needs to deep soul searching and lots of love. He is having difficult time. By what you say that he says it is healthy seems to be either an excuse to himself or he is trying to distract you and I am 99% sure he knows and he wants to change but it is a very difficult thing to do if you are not ready. Talk with a family member to see if they can help you get help. If I can help another way let me know. Just know this that you are an awesome person and have a huge heart.

Snuck alcohol into the woods next to our homes. I've done Coke, Cat, Speed, Extacy, LSD, Weed, MDMA (no its not like Extacy but similar) damn I've done a lot. I quit all of those years ago, maybe apart from the occasional splif. I cannot get rid of alcohol. It is ruining my life. When I start the quit on Alcohol, I become so distressed and anxious. It's like I'm getting a message that I'm going to lose something important and I get really irate and dangerous. I really need to get rid of alcohol. How long do you take this medication? Do you eventually stop drinking? What happens when you stop taking the medication?
@thrivealcoholrecovery4 жыл бұрын
@@brookelabeau8860 typically it is taken 1 hour before drinking every time you drink. some people stop drinking, others drink in moderation with this method. nothing happens when you stop taking the medication...it's not addictive/safe so there's no bad side effects or anything. check out: riahealth.com/naltrexone

@@jayrodny8419 Please consider the Sinclair Method! It can help to gradually reduce and make quitting easier. Here are doctors that prescribe naltrexone: cthreefoundation.org/telemedicine There are also other medications that may better support abstinence, you can read more here: riahealth.com/medication-for-alcoholism

@@brookelabeau8860 When you stop taking the medication but keep drinking even occasionally, you eventually relapse. So if you stop the meds, I strongly advise you don't drink.
