Really? Sounds like they just took control of your life and you work for them now, permanently! Good luck with that approach. I suppose it beats handing your cash over to the “bookie” and one person being miserable is better than a whole house being “miserably broke”. Been there, seen that and done it!

What a load of “tosh”. The bookie makes it difficult to self exclude unless you take a chair to their windows. Additionally, you lot that sit behind the counter spend your whole life “judging”, this is your addiction. Just at least be honest about it.
@Jaggybabs
@Jaggybabs 3 ай бұрын
@hughbarr8408 It's literally just bringing in a picture and filling in a form, really not that difficult. Can't speak for everyone who works there but the only judgement from me would be concern if someone was spending everything every week but at the end of the day there's only so much we can do to safeguard people.
@hughbarr8408

I remember being in a bookies in Central London. The customer had to ask for a key to use the toilet. The young lady (woman) behind the counter would take a piece of tissue, wrap it around the key and hand it to the customer as if a bit of dog poo on her shoe. Would also do similar in receiving the key. I don’t believe this young woman earned very much, some of those customers would deposit £500 a time in those FOBTs and her face would be green with envy. Then there was the time many customers would lose a couple of grand, £100 spins at a time and so forth and so on. This young lady would laugh at them, really because she was annoyed that they could lose more in 20 minutes than she would make on a month. Possibly I made this story up, of course “bookies” would never treat their customers that way? Now everything is “Online” and bookies don’t take bets with continuous winners, they limit their stakes. All really poor behaviour (but human behaviour all the same). Now to listen to yourself, none of this happens and the bookie wants what is best for the customers poor family? I could go on and on, even as far as to say that women (who never really used to gamble) are bookies favourite targets. Please forgive my sarcasm, you of course are a caring exception. Have a good day. Hugh
@hughbarr8408
@hughbarr8408 3 ай бұрын
Drug dealers never tell their customers they have a “nasty habit”. It is bad for business (their business). Similarly bookies never tell their customer’s how to behave with their gambling problem. There would be no “Gamecare” or need for it if the bought and paid for politicians did not take bribes from the Gambling Industry to change the Laws. It is all rather complicated my dear as so many folk live off the habits of other folk. You could apply this to alcohol, sex and also to social media. One thing for sure is that all addictions are complicated (and destructive). I am an observer, not a psychiatrist but I certainly do not buy into the “bookie” cares theory.

@hughbarr8408 High street bookmakers are ran by people on minimum wage who couldn't care less what the company makes. Despite what u might think we were trained to step in when people show signs of problem gambling but ultimately it boils to its their decision. I worked in the industry for 5 years and managed several shops I know what I'm talking about.

I’ve now gone 14 days without gambling. Still early days I know, but I am finding that the urges have subsided somewhat. If the need for a gamble kicks in, I’d be reminded on the inside of the iPhone/iPad cover or when I open the laptop. There is a note saying, do you want to do your bollocks in? Nah, didn’t think so. Do yourself a favour and watch a load of gambling addiction videos. After watching a few, it was more than enough to deter me from going down that road. Works for me.

Really good advice I am really addicted to slot machines I have self excluded my self from the bookies but still find myself putting all my money in pub slots, lost around 1.2k on them this month makes me quite depressed tbh knowing I’ve wasted that money, I don’t intend to gamble online as that will only go one way, I’m trying too get out of this terrible addiction but sometimes the urge is too strong.

Joining a GA group can cetainly help, and we all have to acknowledge that the urge will always be there, it's how we act upon it thereafter that matters...self exclusion definitely helps as it will make it almost impossible to gamble. With the triangle that has been pointed and with removing one or both, or all 3 sides is a brilliant. Me personally, i used to run into the local arcade everytime i had a few hours spare, but self excluding myself from these places has made it increasingly difficult to gamble as i would have to travel approximately 20+ miles, and with the limited time that i have eg running around with family and kids, work etc.. it's certainly put the brakes on, as if i have a few hours spare which i do from time to time it's just not possible for me to go in to the arcades. I would definitely hand over enough money to a partner or loved one to cover bills and to put a bit to the side every month, and if you do end up going in and losing what u had spare therafter then it won't be as detrimental.

It’s hard to stop something you like. I have never seen a video like this made about “stop having sex with your wife” or “stop having sex with your wife’s best friends “ and so forth and so on. The real issue is not the gambling “per se”, it is the dopamine hit that keeps you coming back. A gambler could win the lottery and find themselves buying another ticket the following week. I know those feelings.

Everyone brings up money being the biggest damage but in my opinion it's the time lost with family that is the true damage of gambling. I've pissed away two marriages and many friends and family no longer speak to me. I put sports betting and constantly checking scores over everyone else. Plain selfish. This addiction is an absolute beast that I wish on no one.

Upon my release from incarceration 21 yrs ago. I began to gamble again but I justified and minimized it wasn't that bad as it was just one cent slot machines. Here I am now 21 yrs later and even though I never went to prison again for gambling I've lost thousands of dollars and blew my nest egg of savings and I hate myself for it and think I'm the dumbest person on the planet. The bookies SE is a struggle from the turnover of staff and how few care (paid near min wage to deal with crap from gamblers all day, understandable they don't want to put in much effort!) Always feels a frustration the bookies can't use their facial recognition tech to refuse service to people that SE. If I'm scamming them they'd snap be on the phone to counter staff telling them not to take my bets or to turn off the FOBT, I've seen that multiple times with people they've chosen to ban, so it's maddening they aren't legally obliged to do the same for people that ask to ban themselves.

The giving up control of finances, although I appreciate its value to addicts, is just so infantalizing. Think how grown up you felt when you had your first proper bank account, when your parents first started trusting you to look after your own money and soend it as you wanted. Even without the issue of finding someone you want to trust that much (I mean, it isn't gambling but my missus wastes even more money with a total inability to save or invest 😅), it's the loss of freedom away from gambling that would be brutal. It's a very dehumanising step to have to take.

Gambling is a deadly weapon it mash up my life lose my babymother lose friends lose land that I farm on. I stop gambling for over five years and started again for the past two years and I'm sure I've lost over a million. But i can say this today the 30of the 8 months I'm going to stop gambling because I accept that what i lose will never win back and I don't want no more gambling money anymore. I give up i have my son to send school and I'm not gonna gamble 🎰 ever again the first step i take is to stop been friend with the gamblers second I stop going where the gambling machines are third I start traveling with a little amount of money and leave your bank card home. Only you can help your self no one can help you only you can help your self and telling friends and families what you going through is a very powerful help because it will make you try harder to stop

I have had to steal food from supermarkets because no money in my bank account every week. I was prepared that maybe I’d get caught and was going to show my bank account as evidence that I had no money and needed food. This is what gambling does, it robs us from every penny we have, it’s a terrible addiction. Stealing (as robbery) is wrong I know and it’s changing who I am, my morals and values, i am frustrated more and more, I hate what my gambling is doing to me and it needs to stop. I pray you are on a healing path and have found strategies such as this video to help you. When I was a child, my dad ( gambling addict ) took me and my brothers to casinos, bingo halls, etc. We had to stand outside of the rope, where the gambling machines were. At bingo, he even let me dob the cards as a 10 - 11 year old. It was a different time back then and I think he knew the owner. So they let me do that. Anyway, putting a naive, impressionable, easily manipulated child in that environment is hideous. Two of us three brothers became massive gambling addicts, as soon as we were of age. Not a coincidence obviously. I have a ton of debt right now and it makes me sick. Wish he had waited for mom to come home from work, then go gamble by himself. Leave us kids out of it. What a horrible addiction. Absolutely financial obliterating, stressful, depressing, life destroying illness 😭

If I lose, who cares, I can then leave with a really good $700. However after losing the $100, now I say to myself " ehhh I couldddd try just $100 more. If I lose that I'll leave with that remaining $600. Still a heckuva day right? " Well next thing I know I'm down to $300 and my thought process changes to " omg I can't leave with a measley $300 when I had a really nice $800 three hours ago!!! I absolutely HAVE to get that $500 back!!! Then I'll be back to $800 and THIS TIME I'll leave ( supposedly ) " Down to $200, down to $100, down to $20. Need gas but say screw it, down to $0. That's how it gets ya. You need to be disciplined to the point that you make yourself get up and leave when you are ahead or at least just breaking even. It's hard to do but you can do it. I have a casino just down the street from me and I know the temptation to just stay there and keep playing. But the odds are that you will lose everything and that's how it is set up by casinos. They know our weaknesses. You slowly lose it all. Slots are my weakness. I've won jackpots of thousands of dollars and still returned to win more, but lost it all.

Give yourself credit for every day free from this garbage. The days will add up. Make sure to find something else to do. Hobbies, reading, movies, go to the library. It doesn't have to be anything special. Just stay away from gambling. You will look back and be thankful. This illness sucks.

I did hand over all of my money with my family, but eventually she gave me back the money and not long after I gambling again and lost it all, I'm so regretful and felt deep depressed, however I tried to be distracted myself to the other thing like keep myself busy for a while, but I failed again, I hate this addiction so much, until now I'm still trying to do something would help me to stay away from gambling, I know it's hard, but I'll desperately try any leverage to defeat my addiction, this addiction it's been does a lot of damaged to my life, so now I've determine to get rid of it, no matter what it takes.

Lost over 10k through just virtual sports, through normal sports betting i lost over 5k. How dumb was i to think that betting could be a "side hustle" or "another stream of income". I was desperately addicted to the FOBTs some years back..the mood swings I would go through during and hrs after playing where simply insane..from euphoric highs to the most soul shattering lows, when I look back now on my behaviour which included punching spitting at machines and talking out load to myself in the most manic of ways I can only describe it as a self imposed kind of bi polar mindset and behaviour And I wasn’t alone..kicking, spitting and punching machines was a almost norm in many bookies i frequently hung out in

Phil, you're intelligent, communicate really well too. You posses self awareness. By giving up your gambling times/time. You've shown we do not have to fill the time with something others or even ourselves consider not epic/awesome/thrilling! You mentioned you like going out in stormy weather. Ah ha! You like the excitement of wind, rain. Maybe waves crashing the coast. Most people would not see the true value of being outside during a really great, (non dangerous) weather event.. They'd be inside watching a film. But like you. I dig the wild weather..Your Christmas Tree is by choice twinkliing with flashing lights...Much like a casino slot machine...Many people would choose a tree with 'still' calm lighting... Napping is just as valid as skydiving....I've done them both.Thanks Phil..

You are talking about an addiction the opposite way around? Yes I am guilty of that , 50 years ago a school teacher talked about charging me interest on some pennys he lent me , the rest is history in a positive way EG substantial compounding interest situation resulting - however I am also a benign gambling addict from that time also, at a church fete they had a Monte Carlo Wheel, I gambled away my home bus fare money , I begged the operator for some money to get home he gave me back some. Winning at gambling initially is the most unfortunate , in my case I won the club entry lucky door prize every time which led to insanity waisting time and still sapping a bit of money, never ceases to amaze me I cannot stop the urge to try that one last punt before leaving slot machines, time restrict helps EG yesterday fitted in a club visit on the way to a free show , walking away from the alluring music bells and whistles felt like the poison lifting off my shoulders but want to be able to go and never feed the machines surely that's control ?

It wouldn't shock me if some clever forger could create trading card packs, they can make almost perfect Rolex forgeries now. He has mentioned these packs as an investment before, might wake up and find they are just glorified playing cards one day. None of these affiliation MLM schemes last, from timeshare, paid to surf, health pills and more, many of them end up destitute because they get too greedy or it is illegal.

I am aff and gambler with debts hopefuly i will pay them in 2021 since my earnings from aff. Is it goodbye or bad? People will still play anyways. I got fb group where i recomend casinos that will not scam my players. Only promos that are in favour of player. For example make 290depo withdraw without playing make another 10e depo to get 100e bonus(for over all 300e deposits) In Polish market there are many scammy brands that use weird methods to make withdrawal harder by for example saying your docs are wrong for whole two weeks to make unpatient player lose his money. After that they will bombard you with phones with promos! So I collected just several good sites and of they want to play they know they will witdraw their money fast at least. The worst thing js that you cannot block everything. There are bookmakers, bingo, etc Everyday new casino is born. Even if you block your cards you can always go to shop and buy paysafecard for which you can make depo!

Hi Phil! I myself have never really had a gambling addiction (still enjoy your vids tho), altough I did do sports betting for quite some time but then a came across a book written by a guy like you who'd got in to some deep trouble because of his gambling addiction. And because of that book I'd told myself that I'm never going to gamble ever again (been exactly 1 month since I placed my last bet). However, I do have 2 friends that I know for a fact have gambling addiction and I wonder if you have any advice on how to handle that situation? I have told'em sometimes when they're gambling that it might be time to take a break but I've never really confronted them to say that they have a problem with their gambling. Do u think I should do something about it or just let them realize themselves that they're gambling addicts? (I'm from Sweden so my english might not be perfect)

Although it's still gambling, it gives me the same thrill of playing slots, but I'd much rather give my money to family than the casinos. Also if I lose, I lose $40-$60 versus $400.
