My Miniature Schnauzer was a 4 year old rescue dog when we got her, and a trainer thought she had social anxiety (a six-week training course and regular socializing but she actually got worse instead of better!) Anyway this video's method is what the trainer recommended for leash pulling. It should work for most dogs but mine was an exception. Spent the whole time walking back and forth, day after day, week after week, my little stinker never learned. Finally I decided you know what when you bark and pull we're just turning around & going home. Try again tomorrow, repeat process. But you know what in about a week she figured it out, she'd rather get to go for a walk and now she almost never barks or pulls

You know, this is just a great idea 😮 I have a 9 month old mini schnauzer and I have tried *everything*, from treats and the exercises in the video to pops in the leash and even when he gets better he keeps doing it - although he learns everything else really fast 🤡 If he keeps like this after a few more tries I might implement this method too, this evening I was considering a prong collar ( and feeling extremely incompetent 'cause I just feel like I'm missing something here)

Took five year until I could trust my Schnuzer reliably stay by my side off lead. Twice daily work sessions of twenty minutes for five years. She was great on lead but if a distraction came along she would bolt. Click trainig and everything. Five long years but I finally won!

I tried this with my MS but he still pulled. I put a doggy backpack on him- problem solved. It was so funny , he had the work additude and all his focus was on it . He actually was more focused on what I was wanting him to do. So just another option.

It can be any kind of slip lead as long as you use proper technique. You can also use the same techniques with a flat collar and regular lead being sure to watch your collar placement as well.

Many thanks for your very helpful videos and helping to relieve some of my nerves before getting my Miniature Schnauzer puppy in March. Watching yourself and other trainers the puppies are always walked on the left side - is there any reason for this ? Sorry the leash link does not work and wondered if you can send a link to the leash you use ? Many thanks Bob

Hey Bob! I updated the leash link. Sorry about that. Left side is a dog show thing that many trainers end up adopting but we try to make sure our dogs can still walk on the right side as well.

I read the comments and your answer and I like them!! Will be useful for my next dog! What do you think of leashes extend 6 ft? I was using that with my Schnauzer/Yorkshire. He would go s little fwd but by the time I passed him he was ready to follow, occasionally need a little pull but worked well.

Why?
@snakerivercanine
@snakerivercanine 3 жыл бұрын
Actually with proper leash handling and collar placement collars are perfectly safe. Harnesses are great but made for animals to pull things. So if your dog is prone to leash pulling then there is nothing you can do to correct it while using a harness. People worry about collapsed tracheas but that is a genetically inherited trait and generally not caused by collar use.

@snakerivercanine

Yes young puppies must undergo a much different leash training exercise. We first start with following off-leash. Then introduce the leash carefully. Pull slightly forward on the leash to encourage the pup forward while luring with a treat. One the pup takes a couple steps forward, release the pressure and give the treat. Do this a number of times until the pup realizes that forward pressure on the leash means to step forward and is a positive reward and not a negative feeling. It is extremely common for new pups to pout or panic when on leash so take small steps the first week or so. Keep treats handy for encouragement. By week 2 your pup should be weaned off treats and walking nicely on leash.
@nana4121
@nana4121 3 ай бұрын
When we got our 4 month old he used to do the same, how we fixed this was by walking him every day. Little more each day, he quickly got used to it and likes it very much. Maybe encourage with treats at the beginning. That seemed to help as well :)

I usually use a harness with my miniature schnauzer so do you recommend this kind of leash instead when initially training?
@snakerivercanine
@snakerivercanine 3 жыл бұрын
The negative side to a harness is there is no way to correct when the dog wants to pull. When a dog is ahead of the handler and pulling there can be escalated behavior issues. My preference is a collar that is properly placed (and this safe on the dog) and proper leash handling techniques which includes to constant pressure or pull.

All three of our 5 years old miniature Schnauzers are pullers. Laura is the most eager, trying to rear up on her hind legs and pull. She was a rescue from spending the first year of her life free roaming without a home. Our other two Schnauzers are also rescue but not from such a sad background as Laura. Schnitzle is high energy and pulls. Strudel is usually slow and casual but pulls just as much as Schnitzle when out for walks. I'd be surprised if you didn't have a variety of dog behavior and backgrounds to work with. Are there any techniques beside those shown here that might be helpful for a former "wild" dog and is 5 years old of this behavior too ingrained to correct?

Good for you! Starting point depends on where he is at and if there are any behavioral issues. But basic obedience, kennel, and leash training is where I would start. Training an adult dog can be much different than training a puppy however. Depends on the dog's personality and motivational factors too. Good luck!

Walking at a fast pace (very brisk walk) is actually one simple trick I use to keep my dogs focused on a walk. @@tanya5267 I'm not doing anything wrong because I'll never put anything like that around my dogs neck. You've got to be an idiot to think that a chain around a dogs neck won't choke them when they pull on it. That sort of training went out the door decades ago. How inhumane! How would you like it if someone stuck a chain around your neck with a leash on it and if you INSTINCTIVELY ran after a squirrel you saw and suddenly you're yanked back by the neck. That's cruel and I for one will never do it to my dog, whether YOU like it or not.

Robert Hunt That’s not a chain, it’s a piece of soft leather. I do not support a chain collar either but there is a substantial difference between the two. I don’t think anyone would like to have a leash at all but dogs don’t think the same way humans do, they are bred to not mind leashes. They were bred to want to please humans and most dogs will adhere to that.

Collars must be placed properly (up high on the neck). Most people don’t know that. Collar placement is essential. These techniques can be used with a flat collar if people are averse to using a slip lead but the leash techniques don’t change. I have people tell me all the time their preference is a harness and that is great but you cannot expect to have any control over that dog on leash. Harnesses are designed for animals to pull. Most clients come to me because their dog is out of control on leash and with a harness there is nothing they can do to correct those behaviors.

Not with proper leash placement or proper leash handling. You don't see her coughing. Placing the leash high on the neck prevents this.

Also, allowing a dog to pull on the leash themselves, like this dog had learned to do, allows them to choke themselves, as this dog was doing when she arrived for training. Once she got the idea of what I was teaching her she actually stopped pulling which meant she no longer choked herself while on the leash. It was much safer for her to learn than it was to allow that behavior to perpetuate.
