LOVE your idea of replacing the Instagram follows that deplete you with ones that nurtur you. I'm doing this today! When I'm trying to cut spending I write a list of things I'm saving towards and look at it every damn time I feel the urge to buy stuff I don't need.

I make lists too! I love that you look at yours every time you're tempted to purchase something. I'll have to do that too. I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed finding different channels on Instagram and KZbin that nurture my other loves! Drawing, reading, baking, cooking, parenting, and gardening. I also follow lots of animal channels on Insta. They just make me happy!

Great tips. I get so sucked into sales. I was just looking on Bobbi Brown online and saw a 3 set lip kit that’s worth double - I think “well, I wanted a lip liner anyway, so why not get 3 products for a little more?” I didn’t buy it, and certainly don’t need it, but it’s HARD!!!

Wendy French It seems so strange that I would do a video like this, and be at the point this year where I have overspent. It might be time to start the new year with a no buy, and if not possible, at least low buy. I totally understand the kit purchases, especially with lip products!

+thelipstickgal My collection is really bad in order: 1. Lipsticks/Glosses 2. Eyeshadows/Palettes 3. Make up brushes 4. Highlighters 5. Foundations 6. Liners 7. Mascaras lol I am not overboard when it comes to blushes and bronzers though

Hi from Ireland! ❤ Loved your (self) analysis...some fabulous advice here for those of us brave enough to follow in your footsteps! 😅 What helps me is to buy 2 or 3 really lovely things (be it skincare or beauty), and that totally takes away the urge to keep spending on premium mediocrity items, you know those brands that get rammed down your throat by influencers and department stores that actually aren't worth half their cost. Equally, here we have supermarket own brand stuff thats very cheap, cruelty free, fragrance free, elegantly formulated, that I'd normally ignore, opting for drugstore brands, but actually, if you open your eyes, there's bargains to be had, so no need to (again) gather loads of meh products simply because you can't turn off that urge to shop!!! 😅😅😅 I'm not making much sense, but I loved your video, that's all, lol. This video was recorded a long time ago, and I'm still struggling with over purchasing. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️ I totally understand your thought process. I occasionally go crazy and over purchase, but a lot of the time I do my research and carefully consider what I'm going to purchase. Since I have this channel, I do have more products than the average person. But that's part of the encyclopedic view I'm trying to take. I agree shopping your stash is a great way as well as comparing things in your stash to the new items that come out. Both of those are great tips for no buys as well as I don't count my ipsy or boxycharm and that helps too cuz you still get make up items and some skin care every month so it doesn't feel like your totally depriving yourself. Avoid sales online is great too as well as when you are in the store though. When I go to the store I try not to walk through the make up section cuz they usually always have something or another on sale or clearanced so I would just avoid it all together to avoid temptation.

For me, the biggest thing that has helped me stop buying so much makeup has been telling myself that if I use such and such amount of products up, I can buy another one. It takes so much time to use up products, and while I am working on finishing things, I clearly don't need more. I have been using my makeup more now that I am trying to use things up, and so have been having more fun and creative makeup time. I don't want to have a minimalist makeup collection, but I also have played with enough makeup items that I know what my preferences are, and I don't need to try new things just to try them. Seeing my makeup items as something I would like to use up completely some day changes how I shop for things when I do need something new, because there are more criteria an item must meet if it is an item I want to use up: (it cannot be a double of something I already have, it must be able to be used for multiple makeup styles, and the description must be the kind of thing that I am looking for, etc.) I don't expect to use every item I own up, because I have a lot of colorful and sparkly eye makeup that I use only at specific times, for example, but I enter into purchasing lip products, base products, mascaras, liners, and so on expecting to use the item I am purchasing all the way. It is actually really fun and satisfying knowing that I am getting use out of my purchases, and way more fun to do my makeup than it is to just purchase new things.

Because I have a beauty channel, I obviously don't have a minimalist collection. I'm also trying to make sure that I'm not getting things I'm not actually interested in, and making sure that they're not similar to products I already have. That stops a lot of purchases for me, but I still have more than I need.

@@thelipstickgal I just put my makeup away in its storage except for a small makeup bag, and since it had been awhile since I had put that much of my makeup away, I was once again struck by how much I really have. But I do my makeup for theater, for filming music for my church, and for special occasions. It makes sense for me to have a variety of things, and I need to stop comparing myself with people who can just have one small makeup bag and that is all they own. But I don't need more unless I run out, because for me my makeup items are purely functional, their only use to me is what they can do when I put them on my face. For you, since you have a beauty channel, you have to weigh different variables. And I don't want it to sound like I have it all together - I still struggle with a lot of these unhealthy mental habits I have left over. I still have 4 different concealers, that even my husband, who is very good at distinguishing colors and undertones, says look nearly the same swatched out. I still find myself trying to distract myself from unpleasantness by looking for something to want. It is so hard to make these decisions and place healthy boundaries for ourselves when the entire beauty economy is telling us we need to buy more. I really loved this video, and I am so glad that there are voices of reason in the beauty community. I will be subscribing.

I started a no-buy rule on my own before I even knew what it was called.. lol. I had so much makeup and felt overwhelmed that I insisted that I would use what I have & not buy anymore! So, before I buy anything I ask myself these 3 questions: 1. Do I need this because I have no more at home? 2. Do I only want it cuz it w/b something "new " ? 3. How much will I actually use this product once the excitement of having it has fizzled out? Of course when I'm contemplating on buying a e/s palette, I look really carefully at the colors and ask myself how many of the colors will I actually use on a regular basis? Do I already have most of the colors in other pallets? Is it more about the packaging?

new subscriber here. My biggest problem is that where I live, in order to qualify for free shipping, we usually have to spend about $40. Most of the things I buy tend to be in the $5-$15 range, which means I'm having to buy either multiples of what I truly need, or adding in a few extras. Oh and the other big problem: the best prices aren't from the big chain stores here, but actually from small independent shops, and they strategically only have a few items on deep discount to lure you in... so what ends up happening is, let's say I need 4 items... to get the best price on all 4, I may end up needing to place orders with 4 different shops... but to get free shipping on all of them... that's 4x $40!! All to get 4 items that were around $10 each to start with!! They make it even worse by not letting you buy 10 of something... so I can't even say, well, I'll just buy enough for the year. They really have it figured out! The end result of all this is that whenever I need a $10 product, I spent $40. I think I need to get over my obsession with getting free shipping. Shipping isn't even THAT expensive, it's just like I'm allergic to paying for it lol. Great tips in this video, and I think thankfully I'm actually stocked up for the next few months, I'm going to try try try to do a no-buy until the second half of September. I know it doesn't sound like much but I'll have run out of my day cream by then.

I'm allergic to shipping costs too! I do that all the time. I'm sure companies do it because it works. When I think about it, it's less expensive for me to pay for shipping, than to end up with more than I'll use. It just goes against my nature. I totally understand why you do it. I hope there's a support group for this. :)

I totally understand. My no-buy started after realizing how much I'd spent on makeup. I would never spend that much in one lump sum, but I sure did in little bits over the course of a year. I'm starting a new series (I'm editing the first video right now) where I find products in my collection that are similar to new releases. Sometimes I like the idea of a product, and purchase it online, only to find that it's not something I can use on the regular. (glitter lipstick, bold eyeshadows, hot pink blush) So I'm trying to hit that "I need it" fix with similar items I already have.
