Rather than looking to technology to extend the life of modern industrial civilization we ought to be looking at its ability to buy time and to slow us down in the transition. We need to look towards our feet. Literally look down at the land under our feet. It is our life’s blood. We need to build resiliency in our homes and community. We should be thinking about adaptation, conservation, land stewardship, and feeding ourselves. We need to decouple our survival from global supply chains wherever and whenever possible.

There is another way to look at this problem. We can make uninhabitable places habitable, starting with the hottest, driest places in the world. If we can make those places habitable (we can), then we have a model for the rest of the world. I am not in a hot desert, I am in Wales. But I will set up a project here to mimic the desert on the hottest days that we get. I plan to build a greenhouse on my own land and set up solar panels to generate enough electricity to drive enough aircon equipment to keep the air in the greenhouse at the optimum temperature for food plants as well as humans. There needs to be an underground living space and a hot and cold store to make this system work efficiently. No new technology is required. This stuff is older than me and I am 73. The experiment will have to show that enough water can be condensed from the air for the needs of the person plus all the plants to feed him/her. We need to discover how much glass is required per person, then extrapolate from that figure to the world. At present, I have no backing. I only have my own personal income which isn't a lot. I am not asking for money at this time, I am simply saying there is a way to solve this climate problem. I hope I have inspired at least one person.

Mr. Hallam, I know you prefer not to get into specifics but I am wondering how five or six individuals hold an important public space or arena in hopes of creating a high level public disruption, if they're acting non-violently. I understand activists have held ground for longer periods of time, but not in central locations where general commerce would be halted, (say an intersection of a major city or bottleneck of a supply chain) only in remote areas where they hoped to bring a halt to one specific corner of commerce. In other words, at Standing Rock we held ground for months, a disruptive event for the surrounding community and for the DAPL pipeline, but not for commerce on the whole of the state, or the United States. I called my manifesto "Marky's Mischievous Manifesto". In that "manifesto", I highlighted several major interventions that would cut transport emissions in particular. When I posted this "manifesto" on the Guardian CiF forum several years ago, I remember many right wing commenters and lurkers of the same persuasion absolutely tearing the "manifesto" to pieces. They came up with exactly the same uniform complacent response, i.e. "It's [massive cuts in transport emissions] not going to happen!!" All sorts of ridicule and brick bats were thrown at me and the "manifesto" at the time. I stood my ground however, as it's obvious we are heading for oblivion unless something massive is done immediately. Lo and behold, just two years later, the government banned diesel and petrol car's completely within 10 years or so! This action made my "mischievous manifesto" suggestions look relatively tame in comparison. My centre-left orientated manifesto simply sought to set out a disincentive scheme to massively reduce peoples' transport emissions. So it came to something when the current Tory right wing government took it a giant leap forward and cut the entire ICE market completely! So, what might look extreme in response now, in the scheme of things, particular the calamity that is already unfolding for many, extreme interventions and civil disobedience are the only things left to try to change things, as Roger is at pains to carefully explain. Every other means of reasoning and persuasion has been tried until recently, and the emissions just keep rising and we quicken our pace towards mass extinction. Climate change is real - Act now.

Everybody gets a cut from all the misinformation. KZbin gets the views for it's ads, politicians get their commissions from Pharma and allopathic quacks, Pharma gets big bucks from unnecessary interventions and useless drugs and vaccines. And Humans get to be used as guinea pigs for trial vaccines while animal lovers get to be happy about apes and rabbits and rats no longer being used for vaccine trials. And general public gets it's kicks from feeling cared for by all these phobia generators who use fear to make them sicker and poorer and so on. First medical business made birth a disease. A natural act once assisted by a midwife is now a big money making hospital event with even poor in India being forced to fork out 1000 dollars or more just to have the pregnant woman followed through pregnancy and assisted with childbirth. Then death became a disease, when in reality death is the natural ending to birth. You enter the Planet alive and you have to exit the Planet dead...either from old age, or accidents or any disease that comes from being careless about one's health or well being. Now a flu is being treated as a disease, when in reality it's Nature's way of getting rid of toxins that enter our lungs from car exhaust, coal burning and a hundred other factories spewing all kinds of chemical waste. This flu business is really BIG. Everyone has to get the flu, at least once a year and it has been so for hundreds of years. Two weeks and you are back to work. Just imagine what a big business 8 billion people can bring to Allopathic rascals guided by their puppet organisation WHO. In the meanwhile the real reason for respiratory illness and the incapacity for healing and repair (generated by wi fi radiation) is due to heavy air pollution with millions of vehicles added to the Planet every day, every year and where is the CO to go? Every place in car and auto intensive countries has an air pollution index that shows CO in the danger red zone...very severe and CO (Carbon monoxide) poisoning produces the SAME SYMPTOMS AS COVID....Covid is the code name for CO (Carbon Monoxide) ..VID = passed off as a viral disease. The lockdowns stop people from driving around and adding to the CO levels. The word Pollution will not keep people indoors but the term "deadly virus" keeps them in. However the individuals managing the global populations are on the wrong path using "fear and superstition of a cooked up ghost virus" To keep people in for Fear only leads to CHAOS....which is where everything is right now which ever country you step in. Tell the people the truth and have them awakened to the fact that we cannot keep adding CO to the air for it is fast replacing Oxygen, and the Human Race may survive. The only way out is to ride a bicycle with dynamo driven batteries, walk whenever possible and use public transport systems running on electricity with petrol being used only in emergency situations. A desperate need is there to return to natural environments and to make country living and natural environments attractive if we are to continue alive on this Planet. There is no easy way out and no quick over the counter or press button system to get us out. The younger generation has to wake up and realise this or they can just say goodbye to having any future.

The entire globes energy (electricity and hydrogen incl. if all cars ran hydrogen) need could easily be covered by off shore windmills. It REALLY makes no sense we dont, once and for all, take the principle decision to do just that inside a very short year-span. It would create a global supergrowth periode and after doing that or even at same time we could build a global continent connecting vaccum based hyperloop, let a global supergrid follow same route and a space elevator. These 4 decisions would have the ability to improve ALL our lifes, restore conditions for us and biodiversity and significantly improve our lifes without destroying our habitat. A global mega decision on raising off shore windmills would also be a lifesaver for our oceans. I have privately dived at Danish off shore windmill foundations and they function as artificial reefs and create living space for first mussles and seaweed and that leads to living conditions for smaller fish, the bottom (foundation) for the marine foodchain. It is estimated that over 20% of global marine life are directly linked to global coral reefs and these are under pressure because of global warmer water and experience increasing bleaching events that eventually can kill the reefs off. Maybe industrial seaweed production, that Denmark experiment with, can reduce the natural gas production in cows and thus again have another positive spin off that create jobs and allow us to continue to eat meat with less negative impact. In my book it is bad business for us all if we dont speed these things up NOW where we DO have the tech and the solutions. We know that the planets regulating weather/water systems dont respond to negative or positive changes overnight, so the current decline will take time to reverse, we ought to have made radical changes 20 years ago. If you want to end climate change you need to realize that well off middle age people protesting won’t change anything since they already believe in this system. If we want change we actually need to change. That means building communities where capitalism isn’t worshiped as god and where everyone is cared for, housed and feed along with education. We don’t have a climate crisis we have an unsustainable economic system where the destruction of the planet and poor people is the way to prosperity. Do any of the people here want to change that? If not failure is what you get. And in 4 years we will still have time to change without change again. @grindupBaker Annual global CO2 emissions are now 35 billion tonnes, rising 2% per year. The average modern freighter carries approx. 25,000 tonnes. So you would need 1,400,000 freighters every year to store that year's 35 billion tonnes of CO2. But there are only 15,000 commercial freighters currently in service worldwide. So in the first year, you'd be 1,385,000 freighters short, and every year after that, you'd be 1,400,000 freighters short (plus 2% per year to cover the annual rise in CO2, which would be an additional 28,000 freighters the first year, 28,000+ the second year, etc.). So, you'd have to build 1,428,000 new freighters the second year - 96 times the size of the entire current global fleet - and you'd have to do that every year thereafter, steadily rising an additional 28,000+ per year... And how much additional CO2 would be emitted by the steel mills and additional industrial processes necessary to produce a global fleet 100 times the size of the current global fleet, every single year, ad infinitum? "Progress" is going to have to go a lot faster than a bat out of hell to manage all that.

Some ideas: For people: - Learn about climate change and some basic physics (be aware of how energy flows) - Ignore all populist propaganda, politics, anything which does not help solving the situation - Measure your wealth and well being with respect to your ecological footprint (goal is good life with low footprint) - Avoid any unnecessary travel, vacations, commuting (in jobs where it is possible) - Cut down on everyday consumption as much as possible: energy, water - Stop all luxury spending - Yes, I call you out top ~0.1%! - Don't replace your phone or tablet before its battery dies out (one per 3-4 years, not 1) - Don't replace your computer before it dies or becomes way too slow (one per 5-7 years, not 1-2) - Stop buying other useless sh*t - Stop following fashion - Don't have a car if possible - For remote communities try to share your cars as much as possible, so you need less - Invest all savings into home energy efficiency improvements and energy independence (if possible) For governments: - Stop military spending world-wide and spend that effort instead on solving the problem which is everybody's enemy - Stop taxing salary from jobs, so everyday people don't feel themselves being robbed - Stop supporting all fossil energy projects immediately (even cancel existing contracts if needed) - Tax all non-essential consumption in proportion of their environmental effect - Introduce a global wealth tax above a reasonable limit relative to median yearly income - Make all non-essential air travel super expensive (yeah, it will kill a lot of airlines) - Support public transport and train modernization - Support bringing jobs closer to employees' homes - Support the development of clean energy sources and improving energy efficiency - Support inventing ways to develop more efficient and reliable software and hardware, so we can do more with less energy

Can I just personally try to communicate that there ARE nations that DO ACT way beyond the Paris climate agreement and DO better than average while doing it. Dont listen to what your politicians SAY, but what they DO, when it comes to this. Whatever nation you are in. Please hold your own nations climate efforts up against what has been decided in Denmark. Denmark ARE leading the way for Western industrialized nations! Let me inform/remind you. The basic promise, all in the Paris climate agreement have signed onto are: 50% reduction of greenhouse gasses (like CO2 and Methane) from 1990 level, before 2050. In Denmark we KNOW that this demand fulfilled are NOT ENOUGH to halt the climate changes already set in motion. It makes me proud to say that Denmark, in 2019, approved in parlament with 167 for, out of 179, to voluntarily, nationwide, reduce CO2 emissions with 70% from 1990 level before 2030! That is just 9 years from now! Inside the same decision the Danish parlament also have agreed that Denmark are NOT allowing themselves to buy CO2 quotas to deliver the result "on paper". It has to be a genuine and real reduction. So its a massive improvement and what the climate and the global population needs that ALL countries do. THAT is how you TAKE RESPONSIBILITY! On top of that, Denmark have oil in its underground and they have, approved in parlament a few months ago. Valid immediately, to also decide to stop their planned oilsector explorations and have decided that any oil in their underground are going to be stored CO2 that never will be released. They keep their current oil platforms (under the Paris agreement) but have decided to decommission platforms either, as they get to old or the wells they have under them run dry. Denmarks change away from fossile fuels have been focused on land and off shore windmills. Off shore windmill parks are large scale where they are going. The overall vision are to be more than 100% selfsustained with sustainable green energy and usage and eventually export both sustainable electricity and hydrogen. Denmark would be able to ramp up our plans considerably reg. sustainable electricity and hydrogen production pretty fast if other nations or companies would commit to same longterm deals as they do on oil. Our decades long experience raising off shore windmill parks means we have the knowledgeable workforce to respond relatively fast and the newest generations of off shore windmills are producing KVW considerably cheaper than just a few years ago. Right. The civil rights and women's right to vote movements had concrete goals. Where's the specificity here? We can't just demand "less carbon emissions" even though that is what we want. We use carbon for our survival in extremely complex ways. We need concrete alternatives to demand - not vague ideals. This talk lays out a great methodology for demanding change, but it sorely lacks any specific goals in terms of HOW we can get off fossil fuel dependency. Probably the MOST effective thing would be for everyone to refuse to consume the products of animal agriculture. But the situation is not one in which governments have alternatives that can be changed as easily as racist or misogynist ideologies. Our climate crisis is very difficult to resolve even if the governments are willing to try. We need to demand specific solutions.

Such a vitally important message yet only 70,000 subscribers... The human condition, as history has told us time and time again, means that no action will be taken until it's either already irreparably broken or its already too late to change anything without mass causalities - none more so than now. People in general are not impacted enough to be concerned. Too many people shouting out the tale of "Peter and the Wolf". This is not how I feel, BTW. However, while people feel "I'm Alright Jack", little in the way of active change will happen. Believing otherwise fails to understand the selfishness of people in general. Appealing to what little conscience people have when the going is still OK for them in general, will be a very tough challenge indeed - maybe even futile. Anyway, I hope you succeed in waking people up to themselves.

Very Interesting Video, pointing out an action plan for a small fraction of the population that could have dramatic results. But, people are different. People come in all levels of wealth, age, health, education, brains, morality, etc. This climate change problem is very much an issue primarily generated by the rich, because CO2 is primarily generated by the consumption/ownership of goods. The more one owns, the more emissions were generated in their creation and delivery. Owning stock is ownership in a business that emits. Of course some things emit more than others, but that doesn't change the fact that more is more. The poor typically don't have the means to change what they own or consume. So the main solution to reducing emissions rests with getting the rich to take action to reduce their massive emissions. What Roger is saying is that one way (only way) to do that is to engage in clever disruptive protest. Perhaps it could be better to take the demands directly to the rich? Bypass the politicians? Is this even possible? It seems that a lot of the wealth of the rich is through the corporations that they have ownership in. Certainly a lot of the emissions are via the corporations. Were not the corporations invented to shield the rich from accountability?

Not wanting to detract from this video or other very informative and inspirational material but what XR need - what we all need- is another Martin Luther King, a Nelson Mandela of a Mahatma Ghandi and they take longer to “grow” than 6 months. Theory is all very well but what is needed is charismatic leadership

nearly two hours of rambling to say what needs to be done. Yes he's very sincere and very dedicated but this video is almost like some bizarre Monty Python pastiche ; making the 'greatest threat to humanity' seem like a conference about 'planning waste water treatment for the modern age', yet not as interesting. Say it in 5 minutes Roger tell people that's what you are going to do ASAP and ask people to take courage and have a go themselves.
@dannysmum97443 жыл бұрын
thing is scientists already know and have recommended it.. all it takes is for people to wake up and insist that their governments implement it.. unfortunately tho' XR only functions to cloud the issue and piss everyone off..

He is recommending that his listeners do things that will get them imprisoned, beaten up and maybe killed. How long can he keep saying this before he puts his money where his mouth is?

Speaking of Mobilisation, lets get real. The following quote is the reality of Mobilisation. There are more delegates at COP26 associated with the fossil fuel industry than from any single country, analysis shared with the BBC shows. Campaigners led by Global Witness assessed the participant list published by the UN at the start of this meeting. They found that 503 people with links to fossil fuel interests had been accredited for the climate summit. These delegates are said to lobby for oil and gas industries, and campaigners say they should be banned. "The fossil fuel industry has spent decades denying and delaying real action on the climate crisis, which is why this is such a huge problem," says Murray Worthy from Global Witness. "Their influence is one of the biggest reasons why 25 years of UN climate talks have not led to real cuts in global emissions."

KZbin has algorithms that bring up a topic that an individual user has searched for. As most people don't search for topics on the Climate Crisis therefore they do not encounter them. Makes it hard to grow an audience. Could be an idea to put some other topics into the headline to gain people that way.

Roger is an excellent communicator and is able to anticipate reactions with humour and humility. Of course this is aimed at the few who might become emotionally engaged enough to do something now. There are differences with the Freedom Riders - the federal legislation was already in place - but global warming mitigation may be beyond what current political activism can achieve. So thanks Roger for the challenge.

@-GinΠΓ Τάο I am sorry, but your two options are not cutting it. They are both practically impossible. 99% of all mined Titanium is in the form of white paint. We are never going to recycle this back. Are we going to sandpaper all walls? Unlikely. The second option you mentioned is just nuts. You cannot contain nature in an "earth ship". Just the cycles of elements on the planet can not be contained. I dont see any of those options as viable. But I am pretty sure I can predict to you what WILL happen. Its always been plan A for many governments of the world. Doing business as usual until the very last moment when basically everybody realizes whats going on and starts demanding change. At that point some government will pop up and quickly offer a solution in the form of geoengineering. The others will either follow along or go to war over it. And it will work. Climate change will be averted. At least temporarily. Humanity will see this as an excuse to do the same shit it was always doing. The entropy of the system will continue to rise until one fatal mistake brings everything to a quick standstill. Maxwell´s demon will be born and we will all go to hell :) Thats how I see it playing out.
@drekpaprika3 жыл бұрын
@-GinΠΓ Τάο It seams you are misunderstanding me. I know what an earth ship is. And it is an attempt to contain nature. If you dont see this, you are a fool. ;)
