My daughter is 21 months old and she’s super smart. She is already talking and understands two languages, I’ve been around kids all my life and honestly never seen a child like her, she just decides NOT to pick up the item. I follow all the steps but I do not pick the item for her, I want her to pick it up and hand it to me and she seems to be traumatized by the item because she refuses to touch it and looks scared. She rather much go to time out a hundred times if needed. She cries to the top of her lungs and I end up giving up. I am very patient with her and explain her what I need her to do and what would happen if she won’t listen. I know she understands 100% everything I’m saying. I want her to be respectful of the things we have at home, respectful of me when I say “don’t throw it “. She would listen to her dad or even her grandma who babysits for us but me, oh boy she really pushes my buttons

Please help. I have tied employing this method. My son is 1.5 (22 months). He constantly throws his food, his sippy cups, his silverware, his plates, toys literally everything. For the longest time I would say “no throwing, we leave out “etc” on the high chair, or in our hands”. Wouldn’t make an ounce of difference he’d throw them look at me and say “we don’t throw” or “what happened?”. I’ve been consistently trying your method of taking his hand, looking him in the eye and saying “we don’t throw” in a low tone. First off, he WILL NOT look me in the eye. If I get in his face he looks down, to the side or closes his eyes. Then once I release his hand he immediate throws again and most of the time looks me in the eyes and laughs. When I grab him harder on the hand he looks like he’s being abused, I’ve never hit him but the look in his eyes is that of he’s is being hurt, but I dont let it deter me, I keep grabbing his hand or flicking it. As soon as I retrieve it, he throws it again immediately, most of the time laughing and looking me dead in the eyes. We went back and forth about ten times before I pulled him out of the chair and put him in his room. Then he immediately starts throwing his toys, and same cycle. After ten or 15 times of grabbing his hand while he refuses to look me in the eyes and retrieving the toy, only for him to immediately throw it again, I lose my patience and leave the room. Literally what am I doing wrong, I’m employing everything you’re saying consistently it’s seriously just emboldening him.
@MommyAnswerLady
@MommyAnswerLady 2 жыл бұрын
First I would ask if you are getting angry. If you are, which would be TOTALLY understandable, that would be something that must not enter the picture. If you have to leave the area to control yourself, do that first and then come back to deal with it when you have thought through what you need to do. Second, however you are taking his hand or giving him a little flick isn't sufficient enough to deter him. That means it isn't enough that he doesn't want it to happen again. It has to sting enough that he doesn't want that to happen. If he is a tough little strong willed guy...which it sounds like he is... it has to hurt. Not to be mean, but to teach him the lesson. A better phrase is "No throwing". Be straight forward. Not "we" because this isn't strong enough. You have a strong willed child. You have to be stronger willed than he is and your phrasing is important. NO THROWING. That is the phrase to use. If he doesn't look you in the eye, you need to change tactics by demanding he do so. For example, take his face in your hands and face him toward you. He is 18 months old. The way you can tell if he knows you want him to look you in the eye is if you do this and he refuses. This means he is deliberately defying your instructions. What you need to do is win the battle EVERY time. Take charge and don't allow him to win or you both lose. He is playing a battle of the wills to test you and see where he stands. When you leave the room and he has thrown a toy after you said no... he won. Now I will say, another mistake is you said "I never hit him". What do you mean by that? I NEVER advocate "hitting" a child in the context that is... but an age appropriate spanking is different. He is only 1.5 years old, so a swift little swat on the diaper and a repeat "NO THROWING" may be in order if the flick on the hand isn't working. You have to be careful of course because he is small and just letting him know you mean business is the point. But, you have to remember anger cannot play a part. If you wait to win the battle until you are frustrated, you will have a very hard time controlling yourself. Don't get to that point. The flick on the hand needs to increase in intensity as he defies your instructions. If it doesn't increase to the point he doesn't like it, this is the reason things are not working. The WHOLE POINT is for him to be uncomfortable when he does this so he will learn the lesson not to throw. If he isn't uncomfortable, he will not learn the lesson. Make him uncomfortable FROM THE START. Don't keep going and trying light tactics with him. You also said "he looks likes he's being abused". What do you mean by that? He shows unhappiness? He frowns? He almost cries? That's ok. It is temporary and it means he doesn't like it. Don't stop there! That means you are on the path to winning which will give you BOTH relief and stop the behavior! He has to learn that when you say "no", you will back it up until he complies. YOu are VERY wise to take care of this while he is so young. Imagine what kind of will this sweet little guy will have a few years from now if you don't claim your parental authority now! You can do this! Keep me informed!

@@MommyAnswerLady so I employed the method of remaining calm and flicking his hand harder. It did not work. He bawled and screamed and cried and then immediately threw again. I wasn’t losing my temper or yelling but I was stern and I did smack his hand. After the 6th time in a row of grabbing his hand, smacking him saying “no throwing” and retrieving the item. Just for him to cry and immediately throw the item again I couldn’t hit him anymore. His hand was so red and it was no use, he would just throw again. So I put him in his room and walked away and he just immediately started throwing any toy he could get his hand on over his safety fence. I don’t want to hit my kid, especially if it’s not going to deter him. His hand was so red after the third smack after the sixth it was all the way up his wrist and he just keeps throwing. What am I doing wrong? Or is it normal for the hand smack not to deter them in anyway?

@@MommyAnswerLady Wow, I'm so grateful for such an in depth response. His rebellious behaviors are refusing to eat almost anything and throwing literally everything. It didn't start until a few weeks ago, but now its EVERYTHING. If he gets even remotely frustrated he starts throwing things. Food, silverware and his sippy cup go instantly. Takes 3 bites of his food and then immediately throws his spoon. If he doesn't want to eat, it doesn't even last a few minutes. If he does want his food, he takes a bite chews it up and immediately spits it out. I try to remain calm. Initally I would say "we don't throw, if you throw ____ is all done." Then I'd give him another chance, at which point he would immediately throw again. Then I'd say "All done, we can try again later." and take away whatever it was he threw. After so often of it happening I have definitely lost my patience a few times and yelled. Since I spoke to you, I only say "No throwing" grab his hand firmly, get eye level and speak sternly.. And then immediately put the object back, without raising my voice. He does just throw it again. Most times he cries when I grab his hand firmly. I'll keep grabbing harder each time. He does occasionally, cooperate and stop throwing, but its very rare and inconsistent, and he'll usually throw again a few minutes later, while staring me in my eyes and even smirking. I've noticed he's anticipating me grabbing his hand now and sometimes he puts his hand in anticipation. With food, and his refusal to eat anything except granola bars, oatmeal and fruit/veggies pouches I have no idea what to do. He always eats breakfast and dinner with us, we always make him a plate of whatever we're having and have him at the table with us. The food either gets thrown or played with for a few minutes and then thrown. We consistently tell him no and return it, just for it to get thrown again. I feel bad, because he won't eat, and he doesn't get enough calories. We do not give him a special meal, we'll just put him to bed without food, but he'll tantrum and tell us he's hungry and usually wake up at 3 am telling us he's hungry. Its really hard because at 3 am, I'm not cooking him a new nutritious meal and I feel like I'm neglecting my child if I don't feed him something. But he will not even TRY anything we make. I made him a bowl of our beef stew for dinner tonight, he took a spoonful of it and whipped it. Then immediately started crying, knowing he was about to be in trouble. and said "What happened spoon?" I'm sorry that was so long. Once again I greatly appreciate your interest and help.

I'm sorry you are struggling. If your response is enough of a response that your child does not want that response repeated, they will stop throwing food. If it is not, and you have a strong-willed child, they will continue. It is all about their expectations. Change their expectations and you will change their behavior. Your response has not worked yet because the consequence of throwing food has resulted in some kind of reward that you have not yet perceived. If you want further help, let me know. I’m sorry you are struggling. This is a very good question. No, you should never physically make him pick things up. He must comply and do it voluntarily. You must make whatever is happening around the situation unpleasant enough that he will choose to pick up himself. It depends on his level of strong will as to what the exact circumstances will be. But you must make him recognize that doing what you say is important to his peace and happiness. How old is your son?

@@merc9345 It is very good you are recognizing that this must stop and his behavior isn't acceptable. You are doing the right thing to address this now and it is the perfect time to get this under control. I know you love him and are a parent who is seeking to do the best for your sweet little boy! There are a couple other videos on this channel that will be of help. First you need to make sure he stops with the tantrum behavior. Throwing a fit when you ask him to do something is not acceptable. You should take the time to train him to behave so he will know when you make a request, it is his job to comply and do so without making a fuss. Plan to take the time to train him and he will be much happier, and so will you. This is important to do especially before a new little one arrives! This will save both of you a lot of grief and result in calm and peace. You need to be able to ask him to do something without any stress of concern for his reaction. Learn the CTM method and apply it calmly and without any anger. If you do this consistently and EXACTLY AS INSTRUCTED, it will stop this behavior and he will learn to behave. @MommyAnswerLady 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question. There is no problem with this. Children can easily understand context by where throwing a ball is allowed and what the ball is for vs what blocks or toy cars are used for. They do understand. For example, if you told your child not to eat glue or playdough, does that mean they will not understand they can eat food? Or if you told them not to get out of the car, does that mean they won't ever get out of the car? Of course not. They will understand by the context in which you are speaking to them and what you are doing by example. If they are playing with toys in an indoor play area, this is a different atmosphere and different items then when they are outside playing with a ball or frisbie. Children get this.

How I get my 2 years to stop hitting and pushing his bady sister
@MommyAnswerLady
@MommyAnswerLady 2 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry you are struggling. If your 2 year old is hitting a younger sibling, it means there is probably some jealously and resentment going on. First, I would suggest you watch this video from start to finish. Don't skip anything even if it seems irrelevant in parts because it is all about concepts and a mindset for you as a parent. I know the younger child is already here, but these things will still work and help change the atmosphere. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKTLqnVnlrZmnbM Then, make sure you allow the 2 year old to help with baby sister. Help care for the baby and make you and him/her partners in the tasks. Have 2 year old help by choosing toys, helping prepare clothing, fetch and carry things, etc. Involve your 2 year old in ALL aspects possible in caring for the little one. The more involved he/she is in the care of the younger sibling, the more love will grow. When they are left out, set aside for the care of the younger, the more resentful and hurt they feel. Eye to eye time is ESSENTIAL in this too. See this video as well. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmTXo55jfbdqp7c Keep me updated! Thank you for your question.

You have to take a very firm stand on that kind of behavior. It is completely unacceptable and you need to let your sweet little child know this. First try to teach by doing the "straight in the eye" look, low tone voice, and hold hand very firmly saying "NO SPITTING" very slowly and articulately. Tap your finger gently, but with firmness too, on their lips as you say it. If this does not stop the behavior, you must escalate the consequence to a point that the child will comply. Remember NEVER get angry or use anger as a motivator. You are training your child to behave. Not scaring them into compliance. That is not to say if they ARE afraid of a consequence, that is a bad thing. It isn't. It's fine for them to be afraid of a consequence just like we are afraid of a traffic ticket but not afraid of the police officer. If he/she does it again, do all the same steps, then calmly take child out of the high chair or booster seat, give a swift swat on the behind (diaper) firm enough to be effective but not overly harsh, and again look in the eye and say "no spitting". This action will not really hurt them physically but it will give them a clear signal that you will not tolerate this behavior. They will cry because they will be shocked and dismayed at your response. That is ok. Then --- while they are wailing---place them back in the high chair or booster seat. Continue the meal. Do not coddle or reward their crying in any way. Be "as a matter of fact" in your demeanor and continue with a smile and a kind attitude. If it happens again, repeat all the steps with the swat and continue. What is likely to happen is a compliant child will immediately give up and stop doing it. A see-saw child will try it again cautiously to see if you are going to be consistent and test if they really have to stop. Then they will comply. A strong willed child will do it several times, but will eventually stop --- realizing your will is stronger than theirs... which it needs to be. If you do all this step by step, your child WILL stop spitting. LMK how it goes!

@@MommyAnswerLady thanks for ur response ma'am. I started by just holding his hand firmly and increased pressure, then I felt he wasn't responding to it. Not really spanking more like smacking his hand when I'm holding it, flicking I think. I think I read a conversation you had with another mum here about that.

The problem isn't this method then. The problem is he already knows he can win by throwing a tantrum if he wants to. You need to get that under control first before you can tackle other behaviors. First, you need to make sure you are giving him plenty of good attention and affection when he is behaving well. He will need that for the training when he is behaving badly. Then, look at this video (link below) and go over it at least twice all the way to the end. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you listen to ALL the instructions carefully before doing it. Once you have taken control when he gets out of control, you can work on the rest of the issues like throwing things and etc. I also suggest you order my book and read it. BOOK - "HOW TO TRAIN YOUR CHILD TO BEHAVE" NOW AVAILABLE www.mommyanswerlady.com Take charge. Teach him to behave and this will all go away. Once you said flick, I lost all respect for your methods. Physical punishment is NOT any way to teach a child to behave.
@MommyAnswerLady
@MommyAnswerLady 2 жыл бұрын
There is a difference between physical “punishment” and using physical means to teach and train. Then again, I don’t have anything against appropriate physical punishment (spanking) under specific circumstances. This is explained in the video on this channel about spanking. There are many, many parents who believe as you do and have strong willed children who are completely out of control. Their children are suffering and so are they. If you believe that even a little flick is abuse…ok then. Good luck to you.

Sometimes spanking is the only option left. My first child was never spanked because he listened to instructions (this includes repeated instructions). Strong willed children are a different breed. 😢
