I planted a tight wind break around my property right on the border. Improved habitat, made wind/snow break, made living fence and tends to direct deer and keep them on my improved land- good deer tool. Trespassers hate pushing thru hawthorn, red cedar, Jack pine, juniper, black Locust thorns, bayberry needles, etc and it makes a great visual aid.

Lots of great advice Jeff! My best advice is after you've talked to the neighbors and put up signs if you catch a trespasser be sure to prosecute. Purchased a former game farm and had a lot of trespass problems first couple years-they even cut a hole in my 10 ft fence to create a funnel. I was polite but firm when I prosecuted the violator (who shot an illegal buck over the fence during earn a buck season from a stand on the other side of the cut hole). Word got out to the neighbors and I don't have any more problems...

As i was growing up, dad always had a problem with coon hunters coming onto our land at night to kill coons. Well, dad shot two coon dogs and threw them over the fence back onto the land which the dogs came from, that seemed to squash the coon hunting. Dad had a reputation of a man that worked hard every day, but didnt take any bs off of anyone, and looking back, I would expect retaliation, and dad may have prepared for such retaliation, but it never came.

I talked to all of them before hunting because I know that if I shoot one and hit it perfectly, it's crossing a property line in any direction it runs. Good fences make good neighbors, but so does good communication and relationship.

If your having problems with theft on your land, do not overlook small portable gps devices such as apple air tags. We were having issues in Traverse City MI area and put a portable gps in a broken pop up blind and set it out in the open and basically baited the guys they took the blind and the next morning we gave the DNR the gps coordinates to the blind. In the end these guys went down and we got all our stuff back.

Make sure if u use an apple airtag to protect something, to disable the speaker in the airtag. If the thief has an iphone it will connect to their phone and tell them there is an airtag in their close proximity. The airtag will chirp so the thief will locate it quickly and destroy it. Videos on KZbin on how to disable speaker. (Airtags have this built-in to prevent people from being stalked by evil people, women were victimized by men putting airtags on cars and following them home, so apple added this notification function to try to prevent the misuse of airtags)

You mentioned an Australian guy near the start of the video. What you say that he said to you is totally wrong when talking about private property in Australia. Like in the US, things vary by State in Australia. In some States, trespassing on farmland (as opposed to any other land) is actually a criminal offence. However, apart from that, it's generally a civil matter rather than criminal. If someone trespasses on your land then you need to tell them to leave. If they do not leave then you are entitled to use "reasonable force" to make them leave your land. So, you (or someone else, eg an employee, family member etc) need to actually be there at the time and then you can use "reasonable force" to remove the trespassers. It's also possible to get an injunction to prevent people from returning to your land.
@wolfpack41282 жыл бұрын
Folks here in PA complain about crazy people on public land and how there are no deer left. Then in the next breathe they talk about how posting land is BS. Either completely oblivious to the fact opening up the private property would just turn it into being like the public land or being willfully ignorant and just being selfish. The funny thing is this one piece I manage there are a couple folks that have permission because they've lived by the owners for years. The one guy I know thinks I'm selfish, wanted to bring a buddy "because there are so many deer" I could spare a few and I said I might just open it up for everyone to hunt (bluffing). His response was no you don't want to do that. Funny how he turned into the "greedy landowner" real quickly when his hunt might be impacted.
@masstrapper76452 жыл бұрын
Your spot on with the info but where I live and in some other places a person can get caught up to 3 times on your property by the police before a no trespassing order from the state can be implemented. We own over 600 acres, it’s a licensed shooting preserve( we own a big pheasant farm) the land is posted as such, legally every 50’ with 2 signs, yet every year we have to escort people off, remove deer stands and be vigilant or our sanctuary is violated. I’m sure we’re not alone. Great video.

He said keep it to yourself and get as much evidence you can to really stick it to this guy. November 2020 months later i was patrolling my farm on a public road when this guy pissed off at me for protecting my property blocks rd and hand in pocket walks to me belligerent screaming at me. This whole time I’m on phone with sheriff dispatcher and have it on video. He jumps in his truck turns around and comes by pointing a gun at me and shoots over my truck. They arrest him the next day he gets out on bond. DA makes a case which was my state against the trespasser. I said no I can represent myself and I want to face him as that is my right. They dropped the case and just yesterday from my property woods I seen him trespassing from back side on neighbor. Our law enforcement is useless and a waste of time.

Hey Jeff, just a discussion, the concern I have is hunting becoming a rich persons sport. I've lost great deer hunting areas because our (Canadian) government has decided to sell the land. There has to be a healthy balance between private land and public land for everyone to enjoy. Otherwise trespassing will go up or hunting traditions will be lost. I believe you have done videos of hunting public land. I'll have a look later and copy the link so people who can't afford land still have an opportunity to hunt. Great video and love your content. 👍
@kathmandu15752 жыл бұрын
I agree to an extent - but that's the reason to encourage the purchase of public hunting lands. If you look, and are willing to travel an hour or two - there's usually a pretty good bit of public hunting land actually available. Guys who can afford it are also entitled to buy their own private land, IMO.

@@kathmandu1575 I'm a little familiar with Michigan and I think there is good public land in the UP for hunting? I've read an article from Michigan that deer camps are dying and traditions are being lost with today's technology and work demands. In SW Ontario, 50 acres will run you almost 2 mil right now. Property has gone insane. I do think it's important to have private owners that take care of their land and do great herd management. I also think we need to keep our hunter numbers up to fight anti hunting groups. Our numbers of hunters are dropping which is concerning to me. Access to hunting property is part of the issue where I live. Maybe I'm grumpy with age but it feels like we had more hunting opportunities 40yrs ago than now. Hi Jeff, greetings from Sydney, Australia. We do have trespass laws in Australia and regardless of the State (we only have a few) the laws are similar. Nobody can just roll up and access your property to use as they like. The exception may be in cities and the 'burbs where water or gas meter readers can access your property for business reasons to read a meter without consent. However, if someone comes on your property without consent and you don't want them there, you can verbally trespass them and ask them to leave the property and if they don't leave escalate it to the Police. Rural property owners can do the same. On a lighter note, while I was looking on YT I saw a No Trespass sign with a bit of humour "Trespassers will be hog-tied and asked if the have a pretty mouth". I know that would be enough to discourage me.

My BIL's Grandparent's had about sixty acres that included a wooded area in a small hollow, the only large vehicle access was the yard between their house and barn and through their field. Though it was clearly obvious it was private property, they had people drive through during hunting season. They were in their 80's and locals figured they were too old to do anything. After a truckload of guys drove through one morning, his grandfather walked to the edge of the woods where they parked their new truck and he put a round through the driver's door. They didn't drive out until about 2 in the morning about 70 miles per hour. That was 50 years ago in Northern Wisconsin, today he would probably end up in prison.

Despte the signs I have had trail cam photos of the western boundary neighbor’s high school aged kids walking through and driving 4 wheelers on his property. According to him they have never asked to access his land. He doesn’t seem to be bothered by it but obviously it affects my hunt. I am new to the area and don’t know the family. I am a little afraid to communicate with them, for fear of causing a situation and loosing my permission.

I would say that if your not paying to use the land with a contract in place(stating exactly what your expecting, and his expectations), then it is up to your neighbor what activities he allows on the land, even if this is hurting your hunting on it, you still have no justification to tell him or even ask him about it. Until you start paying for the land rights, you shouldn't even begin to think about anything other that being greatful for the opportunity to use the land for hunting even if it is less than ideal for your hunting.

Hey Jeff. I'm in Australia and just wanted to say we do have trespass laws here - just to pick you up on your comment that we don't have trespass laws 🙂 - maybe not in Austria? I'm also a hunter and have 200 acres next to a national park and often have deer, goats and pigs coming onto the property, unfortunately as well as trespassers/illegal hunters. Recently hunters came onto the property and killed five goats and left them there to rot- didn't take the meat, just the horns. As you could imagine I was ticked off, not only because they were trespassing on my property but because my wife was walking around the property when the goats were killed and she could have been shot, and they killed goats that could have provided meat for me and my family - I love goat meat. A week later I took delivery of some trail cameras and had a great day last weekend when the cameras captured the trespassers/illegal hunters as they were walking around the property late in the afternoon. They are now having a conversation with police about trespassing and firearms offences. Main point for my comment is that we do have trespass laws here in Australia. Love the channel.

Dont say thanks for still allowing me to hunt a section of the property. Sorry you can't have full access to do whatever you want anymore. People don't know how to treat landowners. Never a thanks. Never stopped up.. Never a care package. Nothing. Lot of users out there that never even give you a thanks

Every year I have trespassers on my properties. Sadly I'm not around to hunt them down, I have cell cameras up that give vague photos of them. One is a snowmobiler who apparently wanted fresh snow to tear up. Other I believe is my neighbors son checking on what bait I'm using. I've had that group walk in to my property to set up for hunting a few times. I've had signs torn down off trees, fixed that by taking a climbing stick and putting it out of reach of your tallest man. Alger County wouldn't prosecute due to signs not every 50 ft. But yeah give a acre they will take a few more.
@notmyname3883 Жыл бұрын
THERE IS NO requirement in Michigan that property be posted "every 50 ft." NO SUCH LAW. You need to press your prosecutor, or lobby for the election of a DIFFERENT prosecutor. AND sue civilly. You get your attorney fees, when you win, too.
@joedirt5463 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, we live in the age of liability litigation. If property isn't posted and a trespasser injures themself, a property owner will be sued by somebody with an ambulance-chasing lawyer. Gate it, post it and CYA.
@GWHcraig10882 жыл бұрын
only time i have had cameras and stands stolen was on posted property who felt they could do as they want. i called the land owner. he caught them in their climbing stand and told him "the land owner said i could hunt here" a lot of words exchanged and the trespasser took the owner on a 2 mile hike when he only parked 3/4 of a mile from there. my items were stolen because he either thought it was the land owners or figured i called. his 2 stands have been left out there for 4 years un touched. sounds like those are my stands now.

Pa game commision gave us a hard time with signs that are not on your own land and if you put your signs on someone else’s property you can get a fine. What it comes down to is get to know your neighbors and work together

Clinical psychology supports the use of clear boundaries because research shows they actually strengthen relationships, not the other way around. Boundaries are a good thing, not something to ever be offended about.

@Number 1 Fan Thanks that helps a lot. Just bought the property in January and I’m sure they knew it was for sale and thought it would be a good stand location.

Another thing that has worked for me is that, if the spot allows with your habitat plan, you could fall a bunch of trees and block that area. Will change the deer movement and make their stand location useless.

I know in NJ if the land is posted or not. You still need written permission. If a game warden ask. Also Jeff I think you should mention that it's not you sending the message that you won from are short list. I had a feeling it was not from you. I'm sure you would say on a video you are doing a giveaway.

I'm fortunate enough to have family that owns land here in Southern Indiana. They let me pretty much do whatever I want,like putting in foodplots. Anyways, i usually catch a few trespassers on the property every deer season. The number one excuse is "i got turned around or I'm lost " . The whole farm is fenced in on all sides. I tell them if they dont know the boundaries of the property they are hunting,they shouldn't be hunting and to head back from where they came from. Gets old having my hunts ruined by trespassers.

In washington state signs do not need to be posted for trespassing to occur..its hunters responsibility to know boundaries....I think signs are trashy and tacky but I understand if it's required in other states

I leased timber company property in Georgia (I live in florida). We had numerous pictures of people driving the roads when we weren't there. After about 6 months we actually caught one of them on the property. When confronted, he told us point blank that he'd been hunting that property since he was a little kid, and he was going to keep on hunting it and there wast a f---king thing we could do about it. He was a local- we weren't. Worst part was he was the local sherrifs son, so he was right.

One exception is corner crossing. There are no practical consequences of corner crossing for landowners. Landowners tend to object to corner crossing on a purely ideological basis, but when you talk in detail to them they are not really trying to protect that corner; they just prefer that the public land adjacent to the edges (not corners) of their property is not used by the public. Sometimes these concerns are motivated by legitimate trespassing across these public-private edges, but the real problem is that they don't want the public land to be open to the public at all.

I'm pretty sure it's in the UK where they have the "right to roam act" it means anyone can go anywhere because if they didn't have that right, 100% of the land would be private and nobody could go anywhere. In USA, Canada there's enough public land people can use so there's no excuse. I get some of the neighbors using my land and I'm ok with it because I want to stay friendly with the neighbors but it's a bit frustrating that I spend a lot of work on my property and someone else gets to enjoy it without doing any work.

We caretake ~200 acre parcel and there's one family that we push off the property every year. They refuse to honor the landowners wishes and won't acknowledge that we're actually the caretakers even though we have years of correspondence stating as such. This past year we finally got permission to post the property. While we didn't see the typical family gathering we usually would, there was a set of prints meandering around the property and they definitely got a deer. Buck or doe, not sure, as they jack deer and have no care for what they take. Until we fully own the property and prosecute, it's sadly something we'll continually have to deal with. It's a royal pain

We’ve had one of our worst deer hunting seasons ever in the past 20 years in 2022. I walked our property after deer season and found fourwheeler tracks and shotgun shells in places on our property that we don’t go during deer season. Even found a set of tracks driving directly around a posted sign we have. Talk about a huge middle finger. I’m not sure how to go about it, if they’re deliberately driving around my signs and rutting up my property. Game warden is my next phone call I suppose.?

They got some balls too they saw the camera then they checked it then they walked by it later with bags full of bait looking directly at it eating an apple they didn't have that same smirk look on their face though when the game warden showed up at 7:00 AM

I had an interesting hunt at my sons property one morning a while back i had been in the stand for 10 minutes it just got light and i hear walking in the leaves thinking deer were moving i got ready. So very soon here comes a man only in a pair of pants that were falling down and it's 30 degrees ,walking very close to me he never saw me , i knew where he lived 3 hundred yards away i think he was sleeping with a neighbor. I know it's not a bad trespassing story just an odd one.

I own 21 acres in southern Michigan. It is about the best whitetail hunting I know of. The farmer next to me rents his land to group of guys for hunting. I am forever chasing them off my land. Can't get any action on this with the law. They tore out my property line markers. The neighboring landowners are having issues with this group too. Unreal.
@user-rf3cn2ou3x Жыл бұрын
Trespassing shouldn't even be a crime, as long as you aren't trying to take anything, or committing another crime. Walking over land doesn't hurt anyone. You can't keep the people you should be worried about off your land, such as atf, fbi, tax assessors ect. But I can keep you off my land, and you can keep me off your land . Unless you are native we are all trespassing.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Жыл бұрын
Trespassing should actually be a shootable fine if you have a weapon, and jail time if no weapon. The only folks that don't take trespassing seriously are those with no respect for others and if course, those that don't own land. I mean seriously if you own a pool, how about let all the neighbors come and use it? Same thing....

Love the kumbaya. I actually had someone destroy a bear box to steal my camera. Got to love your neighbors. We have a couple of guys come out from the city to hunt (without permission) the 10 acres next to my hunting property. I have them on camera gutting a deer right next to one of my prime stands that I only use once or twice a year for a chance at a big buck. Makes me want to make one of those paint can booby traps.

Definitely. 10-20' is a common average. The cool thing iit is consistently off from corner to corner so once you have an actual surveyed corner, you can get a very good estimate.
