There are now thousands of Aircraft grounded all over the globe. For each day that goes by there are more and more of them piling up on Aircraft Boneyards and Airports.
What procedures are taken to Store these aircraft? What happens if these aircraft will be stuck on the ground for several months or even years?
In todays video I will talk about both short-term and long-term storage from a maintenance perspective.
As always I would love to hear about your questions and suggenstions.

Mentour Pilot thanks for posting this.. I was wondering if this was going to be a issue.. I sent you a message about re-certification because of parking for a long time. I know super cars have parts that time out even if you haven’t drove it. I would imagine a complex machine has the same issues. The bag of silicit is called desiccant . It’s a hydroscopic material that soaks up moisture.

you will never say bad things about car maintenance its not as simple as it seems folks got a big team to care for one aircraft but its just one or two guys who will take care of a car some cars are really difficult to maintain as the size of parts and accesiblity is even worse than planes also you didnt talk about small planes with propelors like a cesna

Yesterday I had to tow an aircraft on Budapest Airport from one stand to another for a few minutes engine testing, then had to tow it back to its original stand. It was great fun, looking into the miror and a plane is following me, it was my first time doing that. :-D

I work for a low cost carrier in South Africa and we started a 21day lockdown, which has caused our borders to close as well as our airspace. On Thursday I witnessed the entire fleet at our base being being put into storage, and we needed to close up our offices etc, was a fairly emotional day. But the position I hold (AMC Controller) it was quite interesting as I had to help arrange parking area as our base doesn't have a maintenance hanger, so we had to negotiate with the airports authorities to have our babies park on the Apron (we have 4 x 737-800 and 1 x 737-400). Not sure what state we stored them in, all I know is all engines intakes and exhausts closed up, rudders locked and tied down, all door seals taped closed, a visor over the cockpit windows. Couldn't go airside due to restrictions, but our engineers did mention every week they need to be checked, but with lock down we are not allowed to move from our homes. When our lock down ends we have a 3 day period before we start flying again on a reduced schedule (2 of the aircrafts will be used to at first)

Fun fact: I work as a engine test cell operator.. To deep storage a CFM56-7B (b737 NG engine) for 365 days you need to: Run 1 Quart of brayco preservation oil through the oil system and the fuel system will be preserved during engine runtime. You will open a bypass vlv.and burn 180s preservation Jet-A1 After this you need to perform a borescope inspection together with a filter check After closing the engine with vapor barrier film and 15kg of desicant bags and humidity indicators you can leave the engine for 365 days before it has to be completly dissassemlbled if not runned during this period of time

I entered an old 707 years ago, it having run out of hours in Sharjah. It was sadness itself. A perfectly good aircraft to all intent and purposes sitting idle. I looked out of the astro-dome ..used before sat-navs (even then out of date)...and saw the Hostess-suits from the dry cleaners..ready to be used on the next leg...but almost certainly never ever to be moved again.

I live in the Northeast and I would put my 2005 Mustang GT convertible on a battery keeper in the garage for the winter. I'd take it out for a 5 minute drive every few weeks, weather permitting. Unfortunately by late spring I ended up with a dead battery and had to replace it every year. I never figured out what was causing that.
@AlexandarHullRichter
@AlexandarHullRichter 4 жыл бұрын
@@earthwormscrawl there are several electronic parts that always use the battery, even when the car is off. Over time it uses the battery up. I have two cars that have been sitting for a year and some, and I just disconnect the batteries when I'm not using them. When I want to drive one, I just reconnect the battery, and it starts right up. My biggest concern is actually fuel, because gasoline goes bad after a number of months. I try to keep about 1/2 to 1 gallon in each car, and then I try to use that up before it goes bad, replacing it with the same amount of fresh fuel.

Actually shared this with my dispatch team because we’ve been having to route things for storage and getting requests from our maintenance planners to fly grounded planes to prevent more extensive checks. Because I had watched the video, I knew why the planners were making the requests while I was routing last week but some of coworkers/supervisors didn’t understand. I got thanks and got told by someone who’d been in the industry for 20+ years say he learned a lot. :) Thanks for helping us understand what our maintenance planners and controllers, and what our airport operation personnel are dealing with in this time.

It is much easier to do maintenance of aircrafts which are being operated continuously compared with those grounded for a long time of period because while being parked, many unpleasant phenomena can occur to both the internal parts and the external parts. Therefore maintenance staff must be much more careful to check them all. I always appreciate their hard work even though their existence & role is rarely highlighted in public. I add that the costs of maintenance including fuel price for engine test and the parking charges to be paid to each airport weigh quite a lot on all the airlines.

As I am working in a CAMO I do know about this. Have to deal with storage procedures right now quite often. Addtional to your info there needs to be sayed that all the calendar tasks you do during regular maintenance have to be observed too and life limited parts need to be taken care of. Well you obviously need no life vests, but once you get the plane ready to fly again you may have to replace them all. The list is quite long. Storage means just less tasks to do and some can be posponed to reentry to service.

Love your vlog on this! Because it reminds me of when I worked for Mercury Air Center in Santa Barbara as a aircraft line tech and a couple of times, there was 3 707s owned by a Saudi prince that had them parked for over 2 years on the east side of the airport, we had to go and do what he was talking about in the video but the thing that stands out is when I opened the door to cabin the stench of B.O. hit me like a ton of bricks because the prince didn't take of his planes very well which is why we were constantly keeping up on these planes to keep them airworthy, oh they were finally seized by the U.S. government for the prince not keeping up on back taxes and those planes were flown out to Arizona to the boneyard

Currently NZ in lockdown. I was talking to one of my neighbors about running her car at least once a week. She thought just letting idle for 5 mins was enough. I pointed out to her that she must run it long enough to fully heat the exhaust and the engine up to temp to get rid off moisture. Otherwise the exhaust will rot out real quick. We are expecting this lockdown to go from 4 weeks up to 6 or more. Be safe everyone.

@dennymambo
@dennymambo 2 жыл бұрын
@@MurraydeLues Yeah Idling for 5 mins is worse than nothing. It would be less harmful to just turn it over for 30 sec without starting it to move some oil through. Like you say it just sucks all the ambient moisture in and doesn't burn it off. I've torn down a bike engine where the piston rings had trapped moisture against the cylinder wall and pitted it. Still ran, just burnt a little oil & blew smoke.

This brings up another question I always wondered. How do you start up an aircraft that has been shut down for a long time? How long do the batteries hold charge? You need the batteries to get the auxiliary power unit going I take it? And you mentioned removing the batteries for long term storage. How do you start it then? I imagine you maybe put in charged batteries, or put in batteries and then charge them first. I just had a hilarious image of a really long pair of jumper cables going from one jet aircraft to another to jump start it. LOL.

I've worked as a small-boat marine engineer for many years and bacteria in the fuel tank is a horrendous problem. It's actually a mixture of bacteria and fungus which can enter the tank through the vent pipe. It lives and grows at the barrier between the water and the fuel transforming the fuel into a gelatinous slime. This is serious enough as it blocks up fuel filters but there is worse to come. It everntually transforms into a stringy mass like a clump of hair and will block a fuel line wherever there is a connector. In severe cases it requires compressed air at around 8/10 bars to blow out the fuel pipes.

Just look up how to recharge silica gel and it should give you decent instructions on how to do this.

Hi, Mentour pilot. Your last videos abou crisis in air industry helped me to understand what is happening. I work for passenger aircraft maintenance and repair company. We are asked from many airlines to provide them parking services. From Ready to Flight to long term parking. We are overhelmed by this. Now I know what to expect.

Thanks Captain for the wonderful video about storage of aircrafts. The COVID pandemic has sent shock waves into the airline industry all over the world. Storage of aircraft is something not known to common man. I like your videos and watch them often as you explain so well. Thanks Captain...God bless!!!!!!!!

The last flying Vulcan XH558 was almost destroyed as during its winter storage someone put a silica gel bag in the air intake and on its first flight after that, the bag got sucked into and destroyed an engine on take-off. Thankfully it landed safely. It turned out that the ex-RAF engineers on the Vulcan had followed RAF procedures which did not include putting silica gel bags in to desiccate the engine and whoever did hadn't told them, so they didn't think to check. I still think that after storage you should always check in case something, somehow has got it.

A video containing a lot of interesting detail. Thank you. It almost sounds as though it would be cheaper simply to fly an aircraft for an hour each week, rather than disassemble parts of it for storage. Davis-Monthan USAF did a wonderful coach tour of their spares/boneyard air base, just along the road from Pima air museum in southern Az. Very interesting and very sad tour. Would you please consider videos on the APU and how it differs from the full sized engine plus how a turbo prop jet differs? Thanks again.

This was very interesting - so it looks like with low fuel prices at the moment if I move planes around on short hops LGW-LUT for example - or even cheaper airports like London Southend I could keep my fleet airworthy and my pilots licensed just by running "ghost" flights?

2:54 is one thing doesn't resonate, that there are not a parking space for each craft because there are always other aircraft flying that don't need a space. But not in the U.S.. The skies get pretty empty after 10 or 11 P.M., and many airports become ghost towns. And not very many are in another hemisphere where it's daytime. It seems that nearly the whole fleet is on the ground from around 11 P.M. to 4 A.M.
