I maintain a couple blue barrels for short term water storage and rotate using to water garden. I invested instead beefing up my gutters installing several 275 gal totes (2) at house and (1) off shed and 30ft chicken run (825 gal capacity. I rotate that by using to water orchards/gardens. Water rotates but at any given time I have minimum 110 gal blue barrel and approx 685 gal in totes - total roughly 800 gal. People need to understand you cannot garden without water so you need both drinking/irrigation water. With Berkey to filter, I distill all my drinking/cooking water.

People should familiarize themselves with major sources of water. At any given point, most cities are 3 days away from starvation. Learning how to locate alternative sources of water, aside from creeks and lakes, will better enable you to survive prolonged SHTF situations. For example, where I live, we'd run out of water in about two weeks. With my current stocks, my family could go about 8 weeks without restocking. We have since made and kept maps of potential water sources for after two months. Bunker down as long as you can and only leave if you exhaust resources or it becomes more dangerous to remain than leave.

A possible good solution for this would be having a winter garden that requires daily watering all winter… in this way the water cycles through and does not freeze. Or placing a warming blanket over the hose portions that will keep those above 36 degrees.

This is not good if your area has actual winter. It's only rated for above 2°C, not for anything at or below the freezing point of water. Pressurized containers and freezing water do not mix well. Thermal insulation won't help, you'd need to put it inside a heated structure/building. I would advise against buying this in Canada, for example.

My thoughts are this is extremely expensive for one 30 gallon barrel. This isn't even 1 months worth of water for 1 person. If you got a family of 4 or more , you're into this for thousands of dollars. This also only works if you live in a house with the space. For us apartment renters this just simply will not work. Love your channel and look forward to more videos.

Great video, as usual. Great idea, looks good too if you have the money. Not a fit for everyone, as others have commented. Cycling the blue barrels every 6 months to a year is ok with me. It's not that much trouble to let the siphon do it's job, then the hose to fill it back up. It's also great practice to be able to use it when you really need it.

Interesting idea but as noted seems a bit high on price. This is similar to an idea I had but using farm style water storage tank. They can be had in 250gal sizes and up for around the same price. The weight of a full tank would provide your pressure. You would be a bit limited in location for the tank. My thought was to use one as a local water tank to the garden with piping from my water line to keep it full.

This is a great idea. It seems to work well. It is only warrantied for ONE year from date of delivery. This does not seem to me to be good enough for me. I am working on LONG term water storage. If this device is gonna fail or be inoperable as it was sold in 5 years this is not a good a purchase. For that amount of money I can buy more blue barrels and other components. The ones I use outside. A neighbor has a business making covers for them. Usually out of cedar fence pickets. If you are worried about somebody seeing your water storage. They look nice. I do not know the method that they used for keeping the water under pressure. I am assuming it is some sort of flexible bladder system. So my questions to the long term preppers are: 1. How many cycles of use is this system good for? 2. What happens if the pressure device fails? 3. What happens in extreme cold weather? Keep this in mind when evaluating this product. Not all of us live in Sunny Southern California. I collect rainwater off my roof into the blue barrels primarily for watering plants. The only pressure here is gravity. Put your barrels up on blocks to help water flow and ease of attaching a hose and if need be filling up a bucket. Before I would drink the water out of my barrels I would boil and filter it.

The drawbacks are the price and it's only 30 gallons. That won't last long, especially if you have a family. So it can't replace multiple blue 55 gal barrels - unless there's a way to daisy-chain it together with other barrels.

Questions...What if there is no public water available? Essentially you only have 30 gal stored. How cold can this go without freezing up? Can you use it in Alaska? North Dakota? Minnesota? Maine? Can it somehow be moved indoors and be used with an extra sink faucet?Comment-Generally apartments don’t have even one individual water spigot. And yes, the price is totally prohibitive.. Im a Prepper, but with the added complications of fixed income that will never rise more than 0-1% per year. widowhood, increased age, health issues and no family assistance. I like the concept. Not having to recycle water from your drinking emergency water tank is a neat concept. Free of chemicals is an even better idea. Yes, very expensive for a group like these where many preppers like to save money and do many DIY projects. I found the 2 main valves online. So, I calculate about $110 for all the parts included here and using a regular plastic safe barrel. I would be willing to risk $110 and do it myself then pay $519, (not $400 anymore). I guess it went up in price. I don't like the water pressure, I guess that is why you did not use a nozzle on your garden hose. In my case, I prefer to use it as a water dripping system for my garden and not for patio use. Neat concept to play with and come up with all sorts of ideas. Thank you for the video, I will definitely try it as a DIY project. I justify can't justify that price. I might be wrong but this is like trying to sell a fridge to an Eskimo, at least to this crowd.

This system wouldn't be practical for apartments but you could get a waterbed filling kit that attaches to your sink faucets, a water hose and a 55 gal drum. The down sides to this idea is limited storage space, if you live upstairs that's a boat load of weight concentrated in a 24" dia. space (would need reinforced weight support), if you have to move out you would need an elevator. I wouldn't try this meathod unless I lived on the bottom level. Just throwing out some ideas.

jbell430 I appreciate the ideas. Right now I have 2 7-gallon containers that I keep full in my SUV, and two more in the apartment. That's an amazing idea! However, I need to point out on little problem with this set up. I'm in Florida and I know some other areas may have this problem, we have two different water lines coming to the house. The line that goes INTO the house is clean drinking water. But the line that goes to our outside spigots for garden hoses is reclaimed water. Reclaimed water comes from storm drains and isn't safe to drink. If we used the same hookup as you, we'd be conserving toxic water. For areas that use reclaimed water, we would need to tap into the clean water line to attach this reservoir system. A plumber might be needed to place these hookups into place. However, considering the investment for one of these barrels and reservoir systems, it feels like it's a good cost effective option. Thanks for turning us on to Waterful City Prepper!
@servicedogchopper7613
@servicedogchopper7613 6 жыл бұрын
Horror Amino Not all of us in Florida have reclaimed outlets. My apartment complex hose outlet outside isn't. But, I do notice most business sprinklers are reclaimed and I'm sure many home owners have reclaimed water outlet as well. I wonder if there's a water filter that can be added between the outlet and the pressure thing on the outlet hose by the company? Obviously you wouldn't want to buy that too and it would have to last a very long time with constant use. Def a good issue to bring up as we do have a lot of reclaimed water here. I didn't realize it was normal homes though. I thought it was mainly business sprinkler systems.
@nando68two
@nando68two 6 жыл бұрын
Service Dog In Training Chopper Yeah, normal homes too. Since I moved to Florida, I lived in two subdivisions and an apartment complex with reclaimed water. While I lived in the first house (when I moved here), I made inquiries about the "foul smelling" water from the lawn sprinklers because I was afraid that I was drinking and washing in it too. This led to discussions about the stained and discolored sidewalks too. The final thesis of all these discussions was that reclaimed water is SO DIRTY that it's not worth trying to boil or filter it because there's feces, antifreeze, petroleum products, fertilizer, insecticides, and a whole host of bacteria that was all washed into retention ponds from the storm drains and then reclaimed and recycled to water lawns unprocessed or filtered at all. I like your idea about filtering it because I had the same idea too until I found out that it would take a military grade water purification system to make it safe to drink. Since I wrote this post, I spoke to a buddy who's a general contractor about tapping a house's main clean water line for a system like this and he said this tech has been commercially available since the old days of rooftop water towers. To tap a line on a basic residence would take less than an hour and cost about $100 labor plus about $30 of hardware for an outside setup where the water enters the structure. However, the cost would go up a bit more to reroute the main water line to a storage area like a shed or garage for a water softener, home filtration or reservoir system. Considering these barrels start at around $300 each, it sounds like a sound investment to fit the clean water pipes for it of you're going to daisy chain a line of barrels.

Horror Amino Hmmm, I wonder what these water reclaiming buildings are doing then. Had to drive by one once at a job I had. Was a huge building. I figured they were filtering it enough to mot be unsafe to use on lawns. In my view that is its not safe to drink but its safe to be around you and on you. My old job used this reclaimed water for their sprinklers and they didnt smell too horrid but I got splattered on my a broken sprinkler head. Someone ran over it. I right away thought to wash up as it was reclaimed water but then thought how common is this? A broken sprinkler head? No way its that unsafe. But by what you describe it sounds that unsafe. What are these reclaiming buildings doing if not filtering to a point of safe to be on you but just not to drink? Intresting idea about rerouting the main line but yes, to buy many of these it would never be worth it.

Service Dog In Training Chopper Yeah, you're right about washing it off. You just can't trust what might be in it when it gets on your skin. I know that I wash my hands after I work with it. From my understanding, there are pump relays all over the place. Their whole job is to pump in water from retention ponds and pump them back out under pressure. There are also water purification plants all over the state too and they actually pump their clean water back into the ecosystem and into drinking water lines. It really depends on where you are. Yeah, if I was going to reserve an area to line up 6 barrels, spending a couple of hundred to reroute my water line to the barrels would be a good idea. But honestly, at $300 each, it's too expensive for my budget. Maybe if a more economical idea came along, I'd go for it.

Good in concept but I'd like to see larger options, like a 300 gallon rectangle sized cube. 30 gallons is simply too small.

Good concept but if you have to leave your home in some critical incident. Moving a 300 plus pound barrel would be a great challenge. I prefer the 5 gallon jugs an rotate each jug. It can be tedious but I always know my water is fresh and easily transportable. I keep the blue jugs covered with a heavy black cloth. You can even cover the jugs with draped cloth and use as end tables.

Just go to Lowes and buy a 62 gallon pressurized water tank for $262. Get a few of those link them together if you want, set them up in sequence on block, put a shut off at the inlet and a backflow valve to keep the water from going back out in a city system. And a hose bib and you got it made for a lot cheaper. If you run your house water through this system you won't ever have to worry about having freshwater again when the power goes out. And if you want it brown, go buy you a can of spray paint. And that's it. But by all means if you don't know the difference between a saber saw or a circular saw your best option might be to go and buy this item.

The Barrel installs between your spigot and your hose. The same pressure from your source spigot that powers your hose and allows the water to stream out also powers the Barrel. This pressure is exerted on the Barrel at all times. If you use your Barrel properly, water will enter and exit the Barrel simultaneously. Once you fill the Barrel with water, there is never any air inside your Barrel - just water.

Aussie water from the tap is usually world class. You could sell a million of those here, even though the price is high. If you could come up with a couple of different sized water bowl attachments for say dogs or horses, that would be cool.

What would happen to the pressure if you daisy chain multiple barrels? 30 gallons for my household won't last long. I do like the concealment factor and the fact that they are pressurized. It's a great idea.

I think this is a great product. I like the idea and the concept. Another way to store water Incase of an emergency. However, I think it’s priced to high. I think about all the other preps that I can buy for the price of this. 30 gallons of stored water for $475.00 (you do the math). If the price ever comes down I would definitely buy one.

So that's only 30 gal. Essentially a modified surge tank. What about connecting your six 55gal drums in series and 300 gal in rotation in a like manner??? Ok, maybe the blue drums can't take constant 35 psi, but that's why there is a pressure regulator at the beginning of the system, correct? Excellent video as always.

The issue with this is that it relies on the sanctity of the Systems Pipeworks. Which in Many SHTF Scenarios are down or ruined/Contaminated. Not that the systems water is something you would on to drink on a day to day basis if you can avoid it.

@robthewaywardwoodworker9956

I would imagine it would be much like a compressor, in that it can have more volume and still maintain it's pressurization. Taking a hose lead (like the one from the house faucet to the inlet on the barrel) and then running a similar hose lead from the output faucet on the barrel to the inlet faucet on the second barrel and so on, would create a pressurized system regardless of how many barrels one might add. Hope that made sense.
@Ecosse57
@Ecosse57 6 жыл бұрын
my suspicion is that it would work as you described. i was just wondering if there was something i missed or some feature of this system i'm unaware of that may be an obstacle.

I get what you're saying. I would say maybe balancing the over-pressure valves on top could be? Might be worthwhile to eliminate the ones that come before the second or what is the final tank/barrel. That would assure pressure right to the business end of the system.
@waterfullbarrel5561
@waterfullbarrel5561 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but you will have a drop in pressure.
@robthewaywardwoodworker9956
@robthewaywardwoodworker9956 6 жыл бұрын
Shouldn't the pressure remain constant throughout a closed system? If the pressure relief (release) valve is eliminated on the all but the final container, the system should balance out to that of the set point for said valve. This would be similar to the first law of thermodynamics regarding closed systems.

Yeah, I can't spend that much! And apartment patios that you show don't have water outlets. Also, someone else pointed out that many Floridian (and I'm sure elsewhere) homes have reclaimed water outlets that are not safe to drink. My apartment complex does have a water outlet outside but its no where near my screened in porch and not my water to use. Us, in apartments, generally do not have hose outlet spouts. So, there's still an issue there unless you have a sink to tie up 24/7 and yep, I don't. But I also don't have $500 to drop on this, or anything else, either. But, at least there are new things coming to the market. For now, I will stick with stacking water bottle cases on the bottom of my closet that I rotate every few months.

I have something similar in concept. I have 2ea 250 gal totes that has a faucet connected to from the house. Output from the totes is connected to a water pump that I use for my garden sprinkler system run off a solar panel battery system. That way, my water in my totes is cycled as well. I don't have it connected to a rain gutter because that has petroleum from the roof shingles, so not safe for drinking. Cost me about $300 for all of that, which is much more water than this product, and I could use the solar power for other things if I needed.

I understand the cost of development, but this is just WAY too expensive for the mass market consumer prepper...If you are in a condo(still recommend water bricks there), elderly, or disabled, or wealthy without concern for your ROI, this is a no brainer...Other than that water rotation makes way more sense financially speaking....Good review...Only other drawback I see that wasn't mentioned; HEAT....Ever want to water your plants and the hose water came out scalding for the first 2 min?...Imagine having to run the entire drum to get a good temp from the underground pipes where you don't harm the plant roots....OK idea, small niche market. Innovative no doubt though.
