Hi Glen: Little different question: Given striking an iron with the shaft slightly forward delofts the club; why not just use a less lofted club and strike the ball with the shaft more vertical, as with a fairway wood? I realize this would require a recalibration of club vs. distance but would eliminate a swing variable. It is easier to use the same swing every time rather than different swings for different clubs.

Hi Ross, great question. Many golfers do strike their irons with a vertical shaft. Unfortunately, ball striking suffers and there is less margin of error. Typically, these players hit plenty of heavy and thin shots. Also, the ball flight is too high and weak. You’ll see most tour professionals with the shaft slightly forward at impact, even with the fairway woods. They’re still compressing the golf ball. They will have more forward shaft lean, as they progress to the shorter irons. However, this is more as a result of subtle changes to stance width and ball position through the set, rather than swinging differently with different clubs. I hope this helps you understand how to best strike your irons. Thank you for your question. Glen
