Hope this helps anyone. I used a tow strap, luckily I had one laying around. Click click click But then trying to release was pulled back by the inprovised replacement string. I sacrificed the string off my tennis racket after twisting the string in half, then in half again (4 strings twisted together.) Just so happened to increase the tension to a significant noticeable amount. Pleasantly surprised after 50 + shots without any signs of wear and tear. She is now my bone breaker for sure. Your idea is better without the aid of tools. And no, I don't play tennis.

Tying the stringer loops larger allows the crossbow string to be passed inside the loops. The stringer can be removed without untying the stringer

You can also rest the bow facing down at an angle on the ground, resting one limb and the foot stirrup on the ground use a towel or rag ect to prevent the limb getting scratched. Next put the first bow string loop on the limb that is resting on the ground and gently put your body weight on the stock end causing the limb to flex then with your other hand put the second loop of the bow string over the other limb end. Anything over a 150 lbs draw and you're probably better off making the stringer (also known as a bastard string). But it's an alternative method should you ever need to replace a string in the field when you don't have a stringer with you.

Just tie a knot in the stringer about 1/3 of the way from one end. It will take up some length without retying an end.

What is the rope you used as a stringer ?
