You and me both! Just got to get the rear wheel stripped too, then I'll have at it.

The G-Clamp to break the seal is brilliant. For very old and hard tyres I cut through the beads with cutters or a dremel.

Cutting them off is always a good option. Wait until you see what I have to help with the rear tyre in a future video. I am planning to try the zip tie method when I am putting tyres back on.

Very pertinent for me as I'm just at this stage with my Suzuki GT750 restoration (although i took a pair of bolt croppers to my spokes!) . Thanks for including all the bits that went a bit wrong - reassuring for the rest of us mere mortals who also cock it up sometimes 😊. Love the content. Keep it coming.

Thanks. Don't worry I get plenty wrong, and try to get it on camera when I can. An angle grinder is the quickest way to get through spokes, really handy if you are throwing the rim and tyre away.

I was struggling with a stiff 17 incher until I saw a vid on the drop centre of the wheel, get the opposite side your working down in it and you won't struggle with the levers like that, mine was that stiff needed to use some plastic blocks to hold it down in there, couldn't believe how easy it slipped on and off after...

Cheers, I never thought of using blocks to hold it down, will do in future. I have seen some people with special tools that hold the tyre into the well, but maybe I just like to struggle! :)

Did you ever get round to doing a wheel building video, that would be great. Especially with Borrani type rims!

I'm just getting the parts together, so it should be soon. But I have decided agains Borrani rims for this one. Maybe next time!

You want to get on with the motor never mind taking wheels to bits ... get the thing up and running and back on the road , you can faff about with wheels anytime

I am trying to advance on many fronts, but there are a few more engine videos in the pipeline. The way the weather is running up and down the road isn't really a priority :)

Enjoying this rebuild, recently got a 3ta to do where do you get your parts from ? Please

Thanks. TBH I am price led, most new parts that are worth considering are made by the same limited number of manufacturers. I tend to look for suppliers that you know the name of, or have good feedback if on eBay. With second hand parts, you just have to use your judgement, there are a couple of breakers that you see repeatedly, but I like to be able to see what parts look like before I start considering them. Sometimes when it is a desirable part you have to bite the bullet and pay over the odds! I hope this helps.

The front wheel disassembly went smoothly. I expected more of a struggle. I've build quite a lot of rims over the years. Did you happen to notice that the hub may have been offset? I noticed that the threads were showing on some spokes and not others. It seemed to be 2 spokes with treads, then 2 without, all the way round the rim. I've even built rims with 4 different spokes on conical hubs but have not noticed any like that. Watching you remove the hard old tire, it's plain to see that old British chrome is certainly tough. Japanese chrome would have scratched badly, which is why I use inexpensive plastic rim savers and tire levers with a smooth finish. My technique for finishing aluminum hubs and fork legs to look like the OEM finish, I finish them off with a fine scotchbrite pad. I have NOS hubs, fork legs and other parts that are not super shiny. I know others have shown it before but your viewers may find the zip tie tire installation helpful. I recently gave it a try and installed a tire with no sore knuckles and no foul language. As always, a great video.

Thanks for the comprehensive comment. I didn't notice any offset, but I will look at my video again. I was under the impression that the front was central to the hub, but I will check. The back is quite different, 2 or 3 different spoke lengths (depending who you talk to) and there is quite an offset. I even think it is 1/4 inch across from central to clear the chain. I am just stripping the back, and adding more about the offset. I am thinking of powder coating the hubs, but want to see what they are like when I have vapour honed them first. Must pull my finger out and get on with it. Oh and yes I am going to try the zip tie installation method, and I will be careful with my new rims, both putting on, and taking off the tyre.

@@SPANNERRASH It seemed odd to me. I've dealt with rear wheels having a slight offset, but I don't recall a front rim offset. As you said, they are usually centered. I hope you get a short ride or two in, before winter. The last 2 weekends were really sunny and warm for this time of the year, here in Canada.

I was quite pleased to find I had got the right tool. Too often we have to get inventive to remove fancy fasteners. :)
