As a professionally trained musician who took up bass playing about a year ago - and discovered that it's fundamentally different from what I have been doing for 50 years - I couldn't agree more. Thanks, Dan!

Mindset ! That is where it all starts , first you must like bass and music in general, then you must like to learn and for that you need time and practice , then you must keep at it even when you don’t feel like it ! You must be realistic , everyone learns differently , at different speeds and for different reasons , but you must believe that If you really want it you can! Others can and have done it, so then why not you ? Mindset , little inspiration and lots of perspiration ! Don’t forget to have fun and play with others whenever possible ! Would you learn how play soccer all by yourself in your room ? Get out there play with others , for fun in the park or on a team ! Making mistakes is all part of learning ! Michael Jordan , Cristiano Ronaldo, Jaco Pastorius , and most champions out here they became good after lots of mistakes and defeats ! The difference is they never gave up because they just like it too much and their personal goals were stronger then any set backs! We all get off course once in a while , lose motivation and are just feeling the mountain is too high , but when that happens take a break, relax, go back to basics and refocus ! Remind yourself again why you like to play bass and who inspires you ! Mindset!

I choose songs that I know really well, by ear, then look up a bass tab/cover video, look up what key that song is in, learn to play it, then look at the notes and find the patterns in the bass line to see, and hear, always trying to determine what the original musician was going for. Then I work on those musical relationships out of context of the song. And, of course, I work in Dan’s bass book exercises. So far so good, in year two of playing! Seven Days by Sting was a huge breakthrough for me last week.

This is really timely, for me. Last few months I’ve been frustrated with plateauing. Defining/establishing goals has always been the foundation of my development. Thanks Dan, and have a good weekend 🤙

I have to say, the best thing i ever did was get a teacher. I know not everyone can afford one, but if you can, it will be the best thing you do for your playing!

Where do you get drum backing track for newbies?
@OnlineBassCourses11 күн бұрын
I’ve got a load of free ones on my site (go to Free Tools), but Garage Band, Logic Pro, most DAWs have drum loops. Search online for some free ones too.

Hi Dan, are you still in a band or you just doing session work and teaching, if in a band what band and what are the names of the Albums, 👍🏽thanks again Dan, you picked up on something about all the Bass channels, it’s so true about information over load did it for a long time, I honestly achieved nothing but confusion and frustration, I’ve learned so much this last 2-3 years since subscribing to your channel, and I use one other channel, In my opinion it’s the 2 best Learning Bass channels on KZbin, 🔥🔥👌🏽💯

Thank you very much. No band at the moment (after nearly 30 years of playing in many bands!). I’ll get back into it soon though. I do remote sessions now and teaching. If you’re interested, this is my session site: www.onlinebassplayer.com.
