I somehow figured this muting technique out myself when I started practicing the 5 and 4 string chords, but I always thought that it was wrong and I probably shouldn't do it, because I didn't see anyone teaching it. As always, great video!

Helpful video! Thank you. I see your thumb is positioned over the 3rd fret (for baby D chord muting) which does make it easier to mute the E and A strings. The next step, ( more difficult physically for us small handers) thumb over the 2nd fret to allow the low E string F# note to ring while muting the A string! I can fret the F# note, but me thumb can’t reach the A string!! Oh wise and all knowing, teachath your disciples!! Cheerz!!

I rarely ever use my thumb and I'm in the upper intermediate class. If I need to block off the low E chord, I usually use the finger on the A string,. I only use my thumb if the chord requires it.

the one thing 'm wondering about this is that if we have the thumb over the fretboard, it might end up becoming harder to have enough strength applied to press down the frets correctly

the technic is ok for live performance. but if you are recording in studio, you'd rather strum only the allowed strings than mute the others. sounds much cleaner. also a technic to learn, maybe a bit harder

I have probably the tiniest hands you'll ever see someone try and play the guitar with, I'm talking so small that my thumb can not reach over the neck of the guitar simply due to size. Is there any way to mute otherwise? Or do I just have to practice not hitting the other strings? For example, with the A chord if I use just my index finger my thumb is too small to go over the neck. Or with the D chord I can not mute the 5 and 6 strings like you were doing in this video with your thumb. Also I can only stretch 4 frets. I'm worried for my future with guitar, but it is something I want to continue so badly.
@louisasausner5648 жыл бұрын
I have exactly the same problem. It's annoying me a lot because I want to become a good guitar player and my little finger is just too small to reach some positions. My thumb doesn't get anywhere near the lowest string. I simply try not to hit it and it works quite well but I think it will be a problem when you want to play really loud and with much energy.

i have four guitars and i was wondering will this help me the low e string for some chords(like the f chord)?
@CptSnakeshit9 жыл бұрын
+Felicia Studdard If you play F as a 6-string barre chord then you can mute the whole chord easily if you want by lifting your fingers slighty. If your play it of the four high string like 1123xx then you can use your thumb to mute the E and A strings.
@randyjbianchi8 жыл бұрын
Isn't it possible just to not hit those strings when strumming?
@frankym694 жыл бұрын
I play with my fingers. My used roommate used to steal my picks, so I learned to strum without it. It gives off a softer tone and I have more control over what strings I'm intending to strike.

Women and kids also have smaller hands. Why not just control the strumming?
@yourguitarsage7 жыл бұрын
Sorry Dee, I don't understand the question.
@DeeBroughton7 жыл бұрын
Two related ideas. It's not just unusual people with oddly tiny hands, it's a large portion of humanity who might not be able to wrap a thumb around a given guitar neck. Second, there seems to be this assumption among many players/teachers that a learner is going to do large full strums so they need to mute strings so they don't hit extra ones. But, why not just control the strum, still with even timing, so that you just hit the strings you want?
@Ruperth3167 жыл бұрын
its hard to be precise when you're feeling the spirit of music especially in Rock and Roll,hence the muting
