Although there is good support if faced with difficulty in Belgium, please be mindful that international students, especially from 3rd world countries would need to first prove financial capability to receive a student visa, most consulates require proof of funds for the entire duration abroad before granting the visa.

I thought of applying for KU Leuven back in 2015 but I thought chances are lower for me. In Germany tuition is free for public schools (some started charging tuition) and private schools are not free. I did not go to Japanese university (I was not smart enough to go there...) but got into college in U.S, Canada, and Europe. In my experience you can actually go to college for free of charge for tuition in these markets as well. When you go to college for undergrad, it can be a bit more competitive to receive scholarships from North American University but as long as you have decent grades and good academic background and did not miss the deadline, you can get some sort of scholarship. What I liked about European university was that if you take Erasmus program, many schools pays you to go for exchange program and tuitons are waived. For masters degree in North American college, usually you get some financial aids and many people I know actually got their tuition waived (not all of them obviously and it also depends on need based sometimes). But for international students who major in some programs might not be eligible for it.

Hi Oliver! Wow that's amazing! I hope you'll have an amazing experience at KU Leuven! It's completely possible to get a part time job alongside your course if you don't speak Dutch or French. Off course there are not as many part time jobs in English available but you'll definitely find one! Hey Laura, another nice video of yours. My question could be a bit out of the topic but, what is the current situation for international students who want to stay back in Belgium after their graduation? Is there a certain post study work (buffer) option to look for a job or, you simply need to pack your stuff once you are done with your studies? Thanks

Hi Sourav! I'm sorry for the delay of my response! That's a good question! As of now, Belgium still doesn't have a visa type specifically for finding a job in Belgium but you do have a few options! -You can try to get a job offer while in the final stages of your degree (a couple months before graduation) and through your future employer you can apply to get a work visa so that you can stay in Belgium after graduation/expiration of your study visa. -In the Netherlands and Germany they do have visa specifically for the period that you are looking for a job, and you can apply for it even if you study in Belgium. -The last option is a bit troublesome but it's also what I have done personally in Japan after graduation. When your study visa expires you can technically leave the country/EU, reenter a couple of days later for tourist purposes (so technically with a tourist visum) and in the period that that tourist visa is valid, you try to get a job offer and get your hands on a work visa as in option 1. Here's a link to what KU Leuven has to say about working after graduation, it has quite a lot of useful info I think! www.kuleuven.be/english/studentservices/studentcareercenter/labourmarket/working-as-a-non-eea-after-graduation Lastly, I can recommend going to have a talk with the student career centrum, I think they could recommend you also some thing that I'm possibly not aware of. Sorry for the long response but I hope this helps you out!!

Hi Kaypee! There’s actually no age limit to start a bachelor program 🤗there are quite a lot of senior citizens who study at Ku Leuven so regardless of your age, you won’t have to worry! 😊I do have to mention though that if you’re older than 27 you won’t be eligible for some student discounts like for the train etc

Hi Grace! Thank you for leaving me a comment and congratulations on getting accepted into KU Leuven for a Master's degree! I just checked the raised tuition fees since I wasn't aware of it myself but it seems like it indeed became more expensive for international students outside Europe, quite unfair if you ask me... But, I think you can still get the reduced tuition fee! I too applied for reduced tuition fees after being registered as a student so it's definitely possible and if you check this link (www.kuleuven.be/inschrijvingen/registration/fees/non-eea-student) you can see a lot of exemptions for paying the tuition fee even if you're outside of the European Union. If none of those exemptions apply to you you can still try and contact the student accounting and mobility services to try and negotiate to have your tuition fees reduced ;) I hope this can help you forward!

Hi Eldar and Alizade! I'm sorry to hear that your tuition fees are turning out to be a lot more expensive than expected! This video's content is based on the information of when I was a student there myself between 2016-beginning 2020, and since then they seem to have made changes to the financial aspect of studying at KU Leuven, so not all of the information is up-to-date anymore for students who will be studying at KU Leuven in the future. I also have a little disclaimer in the description that the information can always change based on KU Leuven's policies and decisions. I hope you can still get your tuition fees down and I'll be uploading an updated KU Leuven video next week with the most recent information so I hope that can be of help too!

Hi Laura, nice work!! I have some questions for you: - Do you know if "international scholars" (or visiting students that stay longer than 3 months) are able to have some part-time job on campus, or even off-campus? (I mean, maybe there is some problem concerning visa permission, etc.) - Regarding living expenses, do you think is it possible to find a student room for 350 euros? Is it possible for a student to live in Leuven with 800 euros per month? :D Thanks!!
@LaurasLifeInJapan
@LaurasLifeInJapan 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Guilherme :) Thank you for watching and leaving me a comment!! In regards to you first question, I'm not sure actually...I know that exchange and international students are allowed to work a part-time job if they apply for permission together with their visum but I don't know what the situation is like for international scholars or visiting students :) Maybe you could try sending the admission office of KU Leuven an email about it, I'm sure they can give you a definite answer ;) As for your second question, I think it's definitely possible to find a nice student room for 350 euro! That's about the average price for a room from people who rent out places privately. If you try to find a room through KU Leuven it'll be cheaper in most cases and sometimes bigger/better quality. If you're rent is350 euro or below per month that leaves you with 450 euro to use for necessities and I think it's quite doable! Say you use 50 euro per week for food, then you still have 250 left to use on things you want and transportation(although you can walk/cycle to almost everywhere in Leuven and if you want to go a bit farther there's also the bus and train which are cheap or students). So all in all it's definitely possible to live with 850 euro per month in Leuven as long as you don't spend it on lots of things or eat out every night etc ;)

The education system in Belgium is very different from the USA. You don't need SAT. However you do need a high school diploma that would give you access to higher education in your home country. If with your high school diploma, you could start at a university in your home country, then KU Leuven accepts it as well! English is of course important because that's the main language for international students. And extra curricular activities aren't a requirement but they can help you get admitted ;)

This video and u were what i was looking for, girl. I´m peruvian and in december i will finish the high school. Iwant to study in Belgium , in KU Leuven or maybe in U Antwerpen, but i want to study medicine and i know that people who want to study medicine in belgian universities have to take a hard test, i am sure i can pass the test and also i will take the IETLS test in september, i have a sister who has lived there for almost 20 years and i will live with her. But the problem is that i don´t speak dutch or french, i only speak spanish and english, do medicine students who are foreign have a lot of difficulties in exams and with the classes in general? And also, i need to apply to the university first to receive my visa, but how should i do that if i have to take an examen to enter to the university and of course i need to be there to take the exam? i dont know what to do because to get the visa i need to be in the university and to be in the university in need to be in belgium and take the exam. Its so confusing, but i am 100% sure that studyng there is one of my dreams and i will do anything. PLEASE HELP ME! THANK U ♥
@LaurasLifeInJapan
@LaurasLifeInJapan 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Carlita! Thank you for leaving me a message! It's really admirable that you want to study medicine! I'll leave you a link to a really useful website first with a lot of information about studying medicine at KU Leuven :) med.kuleuven.be/eng/education As you can see on the website, they currently don't have an English taught Bachelor in Medicine at Ku Leuven. At the university of Antwerpen they also don't have an English taught Bachelor in Medicine but both universities offer English taught Masters. So if you want to start with a bachelor of medicine in Belgium you will have to follow it in Dutch. You said your sister has been living in Belgium for 20 years now, does she speak Dutch? If she does she can help you out with learning Dutch in the beginning and with coursework as well. But I would really strongly suggest that you first study Dutch at least until intermediate level before starting your medicine studies in Belgium because I think it'll be practically undoable otherwise, you won't understand any of the classes or textbooks, that's why... But if you're super motivated and start studying Dutch now then I don't see a reason why it wouldn't be possible ;) Also about the visa procedures :) I think it's best to take a similar entrance exam for a bachelor in medicine in Peru and if you pass it you could send that entrance exam certificate to KU Leuven and have it made equal to the entrance exam certificate of Belgium! I don't know if they will accept it and what they will say about your Dutch skills but it's worth a try. If they accept it you can go forward with the visa procedures from thereon! And if not you can fly to Belgium, stay there for 3 months with a visitor visa, take the entrance exam in Belgium and await the result if you pass hand it in to the university and start visa procedures in Belgium, it's not the normal route to do it like that but it's permitted in some cases :) I hope I can help you with this! Have a nice Sunday Laura ;)

Then when they are going over your request for admission they will check your high school diploma and whether it’s up to the Belgian standard or not. But generally if you can go to university with your high school diploma in your home country, then KU Leuven will accept it as well (match it to a Belgian diploma) there’s nothing you have to do by yourself except for applying and waiting for the response 😊

I'm really sorry you still have to think about stereotypes that exist about people form the region you come from, I wish everyone could just be accepted for who they are, not based on where they come from... But to answer your other question, it won't be harder to get a scholarship because the bureau of admission and social services which does the scholarship procedures in very fair in its procedures and doesn't discriminate based on race, religion, country of origin etc ;)

Hey, thanks for that video. I am gojng to apply for KU leuven, however, i have a different bachelor background and i'm a bit afraid they won't accept me. Can u tell me, have u heard cases like that? That they accepted people from different backgrounds who want to study different things for master? I have a relevant work experience for 1 year. 2.And the second question, is that possible to have two scholarships at the same time? Like the Belgium government's scholarship and aldo this financial help from social center? 3.does Belgium Government scholarship cover all the tuition fee and goves monthly allowance too? Thanks u a lot in afvance ^_^

Hey Mariam! Thank you for your comment! What kind of bachelor did you already have? If you’re interested in starting a Master’s degree of japanology at KUL, you’d need to have a bachelor’s degree in japanology first (or something similar like Asian studies) and be able to prove your proficiency in Japanese. Lots of classes are solely taught in Japanese or Dutch so it might be hard at first.

As for your financial question, I’m sorry but I’m not really familiar with the Belgium government scholarship so I don’t know if it would cover all the tuition fees… I’ve heard cases of people having more than one scholarship but often it would be a Belgian scholarship in combination with a scholarship from their home country.

Hi Laura, thank you for the video. My name is Carlos, I'm from Lima - Perú and I've been recently admitted to the MSc Human Settlements for this year intake (September 2020), and I'm awaiting for the VLIR-UOS scholarship results. ¿Do you know this scholarship? If so, ¿could you please share your thoughts about it? If everything goes well, I will have news at the end of May.

Hi Mansi! Congratulations on getting accepted! 🥳May I ask which country you come from? My boyfriend who is japanese had to pay the same as me (for bachelor) as a regular Belgian student so it might be that there are different tuition regulations in place now... 6000 a year is indeed very much! Maybe you can consider making an appointment with the social services office? They can inform you more in detail about reducing tuition fees, scholarships that are applicable to you . 😉

Hi Moidu! That's amazing! Astrophysics is such an interesting and important field of science :D Let me answer your questions one by one. 1) There are scholarships available but you'll either have to find one specifically from India for studying in Belgium, or in Belgium for Indian students or have to contact the social services office of KU Leuven because they can inform you really in detail about scholarships that you might be eligible for. 2)Yes, you can still find jobs even though the covid-19 out break isn't yet under control. It might be harder to find a job but scientist are in high demand in Europe so it's definitely possible. Moreover, by the time you'd be graduating from the astrophysics major at KU Leuven we're a couple of years further down the road and by then Covid-19 is most likely already under control :) 3) All course at KU Leuven are super high standard and they're great. Other countries all over the world know too that students from KU Leuven had an amazing education. KU Leuven is the best university in Belgium so you definitely won't have any regrets studying Astrophysics there ;)

That sounds like a very interesting advanced master’s degree! I’m pretty sure the requirements are the same for it as other masters degrees: having a previous bachelors degree, proof of English proficiency and the means to support yourself while studying in Leuven 😉good luck!! 👽

Hi Lenny! That’s why I have a disclaimer in the description box about it :) I’ll add at the top as well that for 100% accurate information they should contact Ku Leuven instead

Hi Arya gupta! Wow I didn't know even people from India watched my videos! I'm glad you left me a comment :) In your case I suggest contacting the social services first to ask them if you can get the reduced tuition fees and after that apply to KU Leuven so that when you're accepted you don't have to pay the full tuition fees of 947 euros but the reduced one of +-110 euro. For scholarships that are not granted by the Flemish government but by private organisations , you have to apply up front and wait for the result. If you get one of those scholarships, the money will generally be sent to you before university starts. But for the scholarship of the Flemish government you'll have to wait until university starts before applying for it and pay for initial expenses up front. I hope I could help you a little bit with this, if you want to know more you can always leave me a comment :)

@@chikannoli Hi Chika I checked for you with KU Leuven and according to this website of Ku Leuven you need to show/give proof that you have 700 euro per month available for yourself to live in Leuven (1400 euro for the first month). This is as proof of solvency to be able to apply for a student visa through KU Leuven. If you have a grant or scholarship you don't need to have 700 euro per month.
