I just wanted to quickly point out that this is by no means a representation of what each university student's life in Belgium looks like! Some are way more busy with classes (me too during the first and second year) and have to be at the campus from 9-18! Others have even fewer classes than me or fill in their free time with student associations or sports etc. Also, life will be a bit different at other Belgian universities!

@LaurasLifeInJapan4 жыл бұрын
Hi Zain! I'm sorry for the late reply but thank you for your question! My major at KU Leuven was language and region studies: Japanonoly. For Japanese language classes, everything was taught in Japanese with sometimes a little bit of explanation in Dutch or English. As for the classes about Asia (politics, history, economics, culture) they were either in Dutch or English depending on whether the professor was Belgian or from another country. Most majors at KU Leuven are taught in Dutch + English but if you study a foreign language then that language will come on top of that. :D

Thank you so much for the very informative video! I have been enjoying your KZbin channel very much, as I am going to move to Leuven as an exchange student at KU Leuven (the faculty of Arts) this September. Actually, I am wondering which dormitory I should apply for. (Should I stay as close as possible to the campus? Which dormitory is comfortable to live in? Which dormitory has a good reputation? Can I apply for some dormitories as the first choice and the second choice?) I would be very very much grateful if you could tell me some advice on how to choose a dorm.
@LaurasLifeInJapan3 жыл бұрын
Hi nana! Congratulations! Leuven isn't a very big city so even if you live on the edge of the city, then you'll still be able to get to your classes within 15 minutes by bike! I personally stayed for 3 years at the student residence called Arenberg, located just outside the city and surrounded by green! I'll leave a link here to KU Leuven's webpage of student residences. All of the residences on this website are either managed by KU Leuven (like Arenberg) or have been inspected by KU Leuven. If you choose a residence from here you won't have to worry about somebody ripping you off or anything else like that! www.kuleuven.be/english/life-at-ku-leuven/housing/find-housing/students/residences

Hoi hoi, was getting into KU Leuven difficult or did you only really need your diploma from middelbaar? or is the admission as hectic as US'? Also, what is the Japan Winter School like?
@LaurasLifeInJapan5 жыл бұрын
Hi! Getting into KU Leuven really wasn't difficult! Before you graduate from high school you needn't worry about anything! Just make sure you've got that high school diploma and you can get into any Belgian university by applying online or going to their student registration office. The entire procedure won't take long. You only need to fill out some basic information as well as be able to prove you've graduated from high school. The only exception is if you'd like to study dentistry or medicine. In that case, you'll have to take a special entrance exam organized by the government in the summer (2 times) and if you pass you can register as a medicine student at any university in Belgium. Although getting into a Belgian university isn't very difficult or complicated, I have to warn you that staying in is a whole other matter. Belgian universities demand a lot from you and the level of education is very high so you'll have to work hard to keep on top of your classes and pass your exams. Basically a third or half of the students which start in a specific field of study drop out in the first few months or after the first exam period!

Hi Bita 👋 finding a master with Both language and math is a bit hard but I think that you’ll get both elements in masters in the economics and business faculty as well as the social sciences faculty! In Europe you’ll often need multiple languages and it the economic or social science field you’ll also need math and statistics etc so it might be worthwhile to do some research in that direction 😊

Hi Laura. I live in Belgium myself but i'm interested in the study of Japanology. What do you think about the study? Kind regards, Nick Cardeneo
@LaurasLifeInJapan4 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick! I'm sorry for the late reply! I hope I can still help you out! I've actually studied Japanology myself at KU Leuven for three years (bachelor degree). I can tell you a little bit about my experience! I started Japanology during the fall semester and didn't really have any knowledge of Japanese before starting. (I only knew the hiragana alphabet and katakana alphabet). During your first week, a lot of focus is put on learning hiragana and katakana as fast as possible so you can start learning Japanese properly. If you decide to start studying Japanology I highly recommend you to learn hiragana and katakana already before the start of the semester because that will give you a huge head start and make the beginning so much easier! During your first semester, there will be Japanese courses such as: -Japanese grammar theory 2h -Japanese grammar exercises 2h -Japanese speaking 2h -Japanese listening 2h -Japanese writing 2h -Kanji study 1h -Japanese video 1h Also, there will be other classes related to Japan and the Asian region such as: -History of Japan (either before 1868 or after/it depends year by year) -Some electives (for example introduction to Chinese culture) -Introduction to Japanese culture -Sociology or Law etc The first semester is the hardest I would say! You can expect to be in class a lot (most days between 9 and 18) but you finish early on Fridays (usually by 1pm). So you could say it's a big workload and there is quite a bit of homework as well because of the language study. But I can tell you that if you work hard during your first year (especially the first semester so that you have a good basis to build further upon) the rest of the way will be a lot smoother. During the first few weeks of the semester, there are already a lot of people who drop out because the study is very different from what they had expected it to be. Usually, these people were expecting to learn a lot a lot about either anime or manga, and while those topics definitely pop up from time to time in our classes and you'll even study about the different anime genres and the development of manga in Japan throughout history, it's not the main focus. During the first year, the focus is on developing your Japanese language skills so that they may be used and honed in the following 2 or 3 years. So If you were to start studying Japanology I really want to recommend to you to do the work in the beginning, go to class, ask questions, do the homework and study the vocabulary, the grammar, the kanji, the history and speaking with fellow classmates in Japanese, because you will really thank yourself for it later. In my case I worked really hard during the first year to have that basis of Japanese ready and it paid off big time! I had not a single retake exam, 3 months summer vacation, and the next 2 years were so much easier because the basis was already there! Sorry if I made this all sound a bit scary but I think Japanology is a great study! You'll easily get close to your classmates, professors and teachers are generally kind and do care about you so you can ask them questions and they will help you! And for those who work hard, there are also many opportunities such as summer schools in Japan for example or other Asian countries, the chance to go abroad and study in Japan for a year (mostly during your master's but exceptionally also during your bachelor if teachers believe you deserve it! And it also just an incredibly interesting subject so I hope I could help you a bit with this lengthy response haha If you have any more questions you can always leave them here for me!

Hi Aqib Huda and Katy Katy, I'm sorry for the late reply! I didn't see this comment until just now. Maybe by now you've already been admitted to KU Leuven but as long as you have a decent grasp of English and a High School diploma you probably won't have any trouble getting admitted. The hard part starts when you've been admitted because courses are difficult and professors expect a lot of you. In return though you get a really great education and a valuable diploma :)If you're in the region around Brussels, Leuven, Antwerp and Gent, there's tons of job opportunities, even in the more distant coastal and Eastern regions of Belgium you can get really good jobs but there are less jobs available for English speaking citizens. As for the city Leuven itself, it's a middle-sized city where you can even walk from one side all across the city to the other side in 30 to 40 min. Since mostly students live there and it's an old city with many historical buildings, the city has a very cozy feeling to it :) Also you don't really have to worry about getting around with English in Leuven, or other cities in Belgium (I don't really know the situation in Wallonia though)! If you're interested in it I might make a sit-down video talking about life as Belgian (international) university student (practical stuff like admission, commute, classes, cost, food, finding parttime student work etc)

Do you have any idea about faculty of economics and business? Am going to apply next intake which will start september. And i have some questions please let me know How many classes per day? Duration of each class? THANK YOU IN ADVANCE ❤️
@LaurasLifeInJapan5 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thank you for leaving me a comment! I've never been a part of the faculty of economics and business, but I can tell you what I know about it! The faculty of economics and business is one of the bigger faculties at Ku Leuven I don't know the exact numbers but during the first or second year you can expect to sometimes have lectures together with 100, 200 sometimes even more students! There's no set amount of classes per day. (Lectures can take place anywhere between 9 in the morning and 8 at night). How many classes you have will depend on the number of credits you pick up for 1 year. 60 credits per year is the standard so say you take 60 then you'll probably have 3 to 4 classes per day, especially during first and second year. Most classes are 2 hours long but some might just be 1 hour long, or 3 hours! When you become a more advanced student, the number of classes will drop and you might have some days during the week where you're completely free (there are never classes on Saturday and Sunday).
