I love the research you put into your videos. I had no idea how the oilcloth and waxed cotton were invented and came to life. I like to combine my Beaufort Barbour with a thick woolen sweater or a tweed jacket. Gives me a British countryside feeling while living in the US Midwest.
@SomeNotesonStyleАй бұрын
Thanks, Kay! Really love those combos - I fight to do the same kind of looks in Texas! I might only have a few days a year to be able to do it, but they're always the best days!
@CanadaFree-ce9jnАй бұрын
I love that you explain oil cloth vs waxed cotton from the start. I think a good degree for the public mis-information comes from companies still using the term oil cloth well after they switched to wax. I have a Barbour but if you let the wax wear, tends to look like a standard field jacket if you never knew the brand. It looks more proper as a Barbour when you have a fresh coat of wax on it. Thanks for the styling tips. love old school rain gear.
@SomeNotesonStyleАй бұрын
That's so funny to hear you say - I've been thinking the same thing about my own jacket! It rarely sees any rain, so I usually don't pay too much attention to how much the wax has worn away. But the other day I was looking at it, thinking - this thing just looks kinda flat. I bought some wax, watched the tutorials - but I've honestly been kind of intimidated to dive into the task! But after looking at a bunch of beat up old Barbours - I kind of get inspired to begin the journey myself!

@@SomeNotesonStyle I’m looking for a waxed jacket as we speak, I want the vintage green Barbour and vintage polo.
@SomeNotesonStyleАй бұрын
@@bubbie23jw ahhh well, understood on the pricing. Mostly I’ve had to start the Patreon up because I can’t seem to get monetized by KZbin when I found out my earlier videos had too much copyrighted imagery. So now I’m trying to take that image research I used to present and send it to followers directly to avoid any issues with KZbin. Patreon said the $5/month was the most common pricing, so I thought the seemed kinda fair… As for the Barbour jacket - sounds like you’re looking for a good choice! eBay always has some great broken in vintage pieces, but you’ve gotta dig cause a lot of people still price them pretty expensively. Or if you want a new one - I saw yesterday that GQ linked to Backcountry.com who had the Beldale $100 off

I'm for the UK and I can't say I've noticed any connections between Barbour and far right here. I do see Barbour at the football (soccer), mostly Barbour lnternational. Although it certainly exists in some of those circles, I wouldn't say football lads here are predominantly far right.
@SomeNotesonStyleАй бұрын
Well this a relief to hear! I had never really heard of this myself prior to seeing that post by Die, Workwear!. And you know, its interesting, now that I go back and look at his post, he's kind of modified it now, removing some of the previous images he posted of a bunch of kids with protest signs all wearing Barbours. Maybe it was fake internet lore spread by Belstaff! 🧐😂
@Kuytus-lx8heАй бұрын
@SomeNotesonStyle Definitely Belstaff stirring up some trouble 😂 Those pictures could be from a recent farmers protest against a new land inheritance tax bill. The Farmers love a Beaufort over here.
@Philipk6523 күн бұрын
@@SomeNotesonStyle Then why did you even have to get political about it in the first place? It's a style video.
@LairdDavidson19 күн бұрын
Lefties in the UK media were connecting Barbour waxed jackets with the right wing because of the farmer's protests. Barbour jackets are very popular with UK farmers, it's what they wear everyday so they showed up to protest in them. The left in the UK paint anybody who doesn't go along with their ideology as being far right. So farmers protesting being taxed out of business by a socialist government are considered far right whatever their actual political beliefs might be. Keir Starmer called every UK nationalist far right. It's an insult they throw around at anybody they don't like.

Cor i can remember when i bought my first ever barbour, a solway zipper way back for a tad over 15 pounds, the only other i saw then was the game fair jacket , thats when they made them to last and were used for what they were designed for and not a style , EYES ROLL.
@SomeNotesonStyleАй бұрын
Woahh - now you're talking, my friend! Now that's the true glory days of hard wearing utility wear - when they could take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. It's nice to see guys today wanting to appreciate them more, but you just hope that the brand doesn't get lost in fact that most wearer's today will never slog them through the mud and the rain. I always think brands like this should differentiate their line so that guys who want the real deal still have a chance to buy the pieces they can trust and guys who just want the look and just get a version that minimally checks the boxes for their needs.

@@SomeNotesonStyle By the way, there is a crowd that's to be found in Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and even Boston's Beacon Hill that wears their Barbours with those classic salmon colored "Nantucket Reds" pants (made famous I believe by Murray's Toggery) and usually tassel loafers or something similar. Odd, but it works... and not so odd at all when you're aware of the historic/ cultural streams that flow together to create that sort of pairing.

I recognize the first two tartans, but unsure about the one w' the red / yeller stripes. I have the matching hat for that heavy Stewart tartan jacket, but don't know where t' get the jacket. I imagine it's plenty warm w'out the raincoat o'er the top already!
@Highland_PaddyАй бұрын
My waxed cotton is a bit more no-frills and about a size too small, but should be fine for casual use if I e'er get the right weather for the thing, but I mostly let the coating dry out so I could use for hiking and such but found it a bit cumbersome for hiking and such compared t' lighter weight military twill, etc.
@OlyfrunАй бұрын
@@Highland_Paddyno offence, but you should know that affecting skipped letters by replacing them with apostrophes (and thus not saving any effort, but making it harder to read) can come across as somewhat forced.
@SomeNotesonStyleАй бұрын
Yea, I think the tartan with the red & yellow is just some kind of variation on the Stuart tartan, I'm not 100% sure of its official title. The jacket I showed is an old Ralph Lauren one I got from an outlet mall a few years back - its not the best of quality. And you're totally spot on about the warmth level. I'm very thankful my mannequin friend never seems to complain, cause I'd probably fall down from heat exhaustion from half of these looks! I just try to explore the visual contrasts of different pieces and try not to get too wrapped up in where you'd have to live to make these these looks practical.

The Barbour Sapper is a nice middle ground to Belstaff -- not as edgy, but not as potentially fuddyduddy as a Beaufort. The breast pockets and standing collar give it a more urban look too, especially in black or navy.
@SomeNotesonStyleАй бұрын
Hey now that's a nice piece! Totally agree with the collar and the pockets - love those proportions on those guys. That bit of edge with the zip and I really like that drawcord at the waist so you can get a little bit of shape in there too so it doesn't just hang on ya like a sack! Now I'm drooling!

Unfortunately, these coats have cuaght on such that you have a category of young men buying these who don't "get" what they're about, the history, etc. and wear them with some gaudy, clunky modern sneakers, skechers or whatever. When wearing these, first do no harm 🙃
@SomeNotesonStyleАй бұрын
Ugh! Yea, that's a pretty tough group to convince to put a little effort into their looks. I guess, just wearing them in the first place is at least an attempt, but you just hope they don't give these classic pieces a a bad name! Sometimes, I try to laugh and think - I wonder if there were guys in the 1980s looking at the guys wearing them over their suits shaking their heads then! 😂
@Leif-s9wАй бұрын
@@SomeNotesonStyle In regards to your last sentence, I was mulling it over. I was a teen in the '80s, and yes, I remember seeing here and there, men wearing outdoor coats over their suits and finding it too "oil and water". In other words, the old rule was, when it's cold and you're walking to the office from your parked car, wear a more formal overcoat or trench coat over your suit.
