If you are in your 20s, by all means try and pre-order a Ship John Wills jacket. I am old and will probably be on to the next life before mine would get delivered. My family would also be confused when a jacket showed up 3 years after my funeral. And here I thought ordering my Nicks boots for a 9 month delivery was excessive…

Lost a lot of weight and needed to replace my Filson Tin Cloth jacket. Bought another. Still not disappointed. I did get the short lined one this time instead of the longer one. Came just in time as I got to wear it a day later out in the rain cutting up trees during hurricane Helene, while my son wore my old Filson Tin Cloth I handed down to him.

I recently got my Workhorse V8 a few days ago and I've been wearing it nonstop. I don't normally buy expensive jackets, but this thing is a beast. Just feeling its construction immediately lets you know that Carl isn't joking when he says that triple-stitching waxed canvas is no easy feat. The triple seams feel like iron, and it amazes me how the jacket can feel so light and so freaking durable at the same time, it's like nothing I've felt on my Carhartt, Duluth or even 1620 products. Though I doubt I'll get to test its anti-water properties soon (living in SoCal) I can attest that this is easily the best jacket worth my money because it's insanely functional, well thought out, and even stylish.

Really appreciate the work it takes to make this type of video. The information here is so valuable to people looking to invest in a quality coat. That said, I feel like the filson you chose really isn’t the right filson jacket to compare to these. Their short-lined tin cloth cruiser is their most popular waxed jacket by a country mile and would probably be better suited for this video than the one in here. Regardless, exceptional video and thank you for the work you put into this type of content. Cheers!

Great video and I really appreciate you going over your thoughts for the ranking, knowing why things land where they did really helps because we don't all have the same requirements/preferences. That said for the price the Iron and Resin is an excellent jacket I think should be closer to the Freenote in the placing. Two way zipper, action gussets, snaps, lots of pockets, it's excellent if it fits your body type. Bummer about not being made in USA.

I have my Barbour Bedale for over 40 years. I sent it for re-waxing about 3 years ago and it still looks brand new. For water repellence it’s top notch. Cons, it’s a little thin for cold weather. I do have an original zip in liner but it’s also not too warm. So in the cold weather you have to layer up. Re-waxing was inexpensive. And I believe it you tear a Barbour jacket they will repair it.

Great video, Carl! One of my favorites so far. A not so well known brand you could check out is Peregrine from the UK. Huckberry stocks them and they might fall in between Barbour and Belstaff. Slim fitting motorcycle styles. LL Bean just came out with the 1924 Field Coat in waxed Millerain and that looks/feels great. Lastly, Taylor Stitch always runs a few waxed jacket models, but I'm guessing TS would fall towards the lower end of quality spectrum. You should've showcased your Tensaw! I love my Tensaw and Kingsman waxed vest.

Really enjoyed this video. I own the Iron and Resin and was biting my nails when you were ranking it. Lol. Im on the leaner side, so the fit works for me and I enjoy the uneven wax, as it seems more rugged to my eye. I also feel like its fairly heavy and couldnt imagine wearing a 24oz beast. Just wish it was made in the US. Im also really lucky to have won a Belstaff jacket at the LA distinguished gentleman's ride. Its beautiful and a tank (mainly due to the armor), but its really flexible and not stiff at all.

Ive been wearing my Ship John Wills for over a year now. Love it and very often get comments, buts it's seriously heavy so really is a 4-5 months per year jacket here in the UK!

I'm uk too and looked at ordering one. Is it too warm for our weather?
@martinruffell4077
@martinruffell4077 5 сағат бұрын
I wouldn't say so. The perfect weather is cool and dry for it, but of course is waxed so is weather resistant too. If you just want one jacket for the year it's probably not it, but I certainly haven't regretted my purchase.

Great video. Would love to see you do Manifattura Ceccarelli if you get around to it. They have an awesome deck jacket and winter parka (I can’t remember if it’s their mountain jacket or fisherman’s jacket). I believe they used to be the factory that manufactured for Filson some years ago before launching their own brand.

Are you familiar with the brand Manifattura Ceccarelli? They have higher end (more expensive, at least) waxed shirts, jackets, and longer winter and mountain coats that may interest you Another Italian brand is Shangri-La Heritage. I don’t know how often they have waxed jackets, but also have higher end leather and wool coats/jackets as well as a custom option

Great video Carl! Did you get one of the Bradley Mountain jackets? Would like to see what that one looks like as I’ve heard it’s great…but cropped short which is something that’s a deal breaker for me.

This was a great video. Especially for me since I don't really like the look of waxed jackets so I'm not tempted by any of these! 😂

Over the years I have acquired a few, Filson, Orvis, Huckberry, and a Lands End quilted insulated one. The huckberry is the only one that is a button Trucker patter, mine has the original all cotton flannel. Its the most "wet" and has a good "look". But the orvis one I prob wear the most as its lighter and it uses a zipper, so its just easier to grab and go. The filson I just got, its a crewman but its more stiff and heavyweight than the rest, its a dry wax which is nice. The Lands end is insulated so warmer, I actually wear that a lot in the winter, the waxed canvas has held up nice vs a standard poly or nylon outer. I'm getting into sherpa lined jackets recently, looking at bespoke post, which is sort of emerging as a more affordable version of huckberry.

For me, Rouge Territory lined Ridgeline is the best fitting and sharpest looking. Satin lined sleeves and wool body lining. I grab this jacket first before all others in my closet. I have three from rouge. One lined, non lined, and black denim. All Ridgeline model. I love their jackets. James Bond wore one, enough said.

Carl I just noticed we have a new workwear brand that's emerged. Well I think it's new I haven't noticed it before and I inquired to them why they didn't sell a hat. It's Thorogood workwear.

Hey Carl, I really enjoy your channel. I'm looking to buy a waxed jacket, like you I'm a bit stocky (5'8, 180 lbs). I'm trying to determine my size based on your modeling. You seem to wear a large or extra large. Based on my stats would I wear the same sizes? Thanks for your help.

I have a Barbour (Bedale), Tom Beckbe (Tensaw), and a Heat Straps (workhorse). All 3 are good for the purpose I bought them for. The Barbour is amazing for a night out with the wife (not jeans a t-shirt kinds of places). The Tom Beckbe is amazing for light to mid weight daily wear. And the Heat Straps is FTS (F*** This S***) cold weather.

I have a Filson waxed trucker jacket and love it, but for some damn reason, the model they picked for the website was like six-foot-twenty, and the jacket looks like a bolero on him! Like the tall man from the Phantasm movies moved to the PNW..... Dunno who okayed that.
