I like your top picks but you wear them with a hat, as seen in your water proofing test. Do you have any recommendations for a hooded version of any of the top picks. I have my Barbour Bedale for over 40 years. I sent it for re-waxing about 3 years ago and it still looks brand new. For water repellence it’s top notch. Cons, it’s a little thin for cold weather. I do have an original zip in liner but it’s also not too warm. So in the cold weather you have to layer up. Re-waxing was inexpensive. And I believe it you tear a Barbour jacket they will repair it.

If you are in your 20s, by all means try and pre-order a Ship John Wills jacket. I am old and will probably be on to the next life before mine would get delivered. My family would also be confused when a jacket showed up 3 years after my funeral. And here I thought ordering my Nicks boots for a 9 month delivery was excessive…

Lost a lot of weight and needed to replace my Filson Tin Cloth jacket. Bought another. Still not disappointed. I did get the short lined one this time instead of the longer one. I recently got my Workhorse V8 a few days ago and I've been wearing it nonstop. I don't normally buy expensive jackets, but this thing is a beast. Just feeling its construction immediately lets you know that Carl isn't joking when he says that triple-stitching waxed canvas is no easy feat. The triple seams feel like iron, and it amazes me how the jacket can feel so light and so freaking durable at the same time, it's like nothing I've felt on my Carhartt, Duluth or even 1620 products. Though I doubt I'll get to test its anti-water properties soon (living in SoCal) I can attest that this is easily the best jacket worth my money because it's insanely functional, well thought out, and even stylish.

Just wish it was made in the US. Im also really lucky to have won a Belstaff jacket at the LA distinguished gentleman's ride. I got it for a ridiculously good price but honestly I'd have happily paid full price. I've gotten so much joy out of it. I do tend to only wear it in the fall and winter---not so much because it's too warm for summer (I live in the Bay Area, so the summer is cold) but just the vibes are so fall/winter. I can't recommend it enough! Edit: for what it's worth, I definitely prefer that it has just buttons instead of a zipper from an aesthetic standpoint. Obviously it reduces the functionality somewhat, but this is just a jacket that should have buttons, not a zipper imo.

Oil cloth or sail cloth is what they used to use for sails on sailing ships. It's canvas. Not sure if Driza-Bone is the same company from 25 years or more ago. I have Filson Double Tin chaps made in USA when I bought them back in the 90"s for hunting and I reproofed them with Sailors. Even the double tin isn't as thick as my Driza Bone drover. You also have to remember that a lot of people don't want a hot liner in their jackets. Especially wool. I live in South Carolina. I want a waxed jacket for the wetter, chillier seasons but it doesn't get cold enough for me to justify buying any wool lined coats. I would not be able to wear it for more than a few weeks each year. I prefer it to be unlined so that if needed I can add my own warmer layer underneath. Less liner = larger customer base

Tin Duck FTW! I've been to the factory space in Washington and got to meet the owner/ operator Jason. It is a one man shop right now, and he's really great to work with. I got to see a bunch of prototype jackets hes been working on and try them on. He took my measurements for a better fit and let me add some features like the gusseted shoulders you mentioned (those are standard on his new Truck Rider model). It's really cool to support truly local businesses like this that aren't just outsourcing all the real manufacturing. I really hope he does well.

I've got a Tin Duck and it is great . It's custom made to my specs also . Can't say enough good things about it . The flint and tender is a beast for the price .

Thanks Carl! Monotone Thedi would definitely tempt me but I’ve been burned before with a custom jacket.

Everyone talks about the Ship John Will’s jacket, but the sleeper pick is the Ramblin’ jacket. I swung by the store to try the Wills for size and really didn’t like the fit. The Ramblin’ jacket on the other hand fit perfectly and wasn’t as bulky.

I have the Flint and Tinder waxed trucker and the only thing i dont like about the jacket is that if you have broad shoulders them it runs a little tight and restricts arm movement like if you where to cross your arms or something.

I actually got the halley stevenson waxed hudson jacket last year from flint and tinder. Such a great piece. But for this year I struck thrifting gold by finding an old avirex made in usa leather jacket

And I thought I had splurged on my Shaeffer Outfitter waxed brush jacket....guess I went cheap. But I'll keep it.

Over the years I have acquired a few, Filson, Orvis, Huckberry, and a Lands End quilted insulated one. The huckberry is the only one that is a button Trucker patter, mine has the original all cotton flannel. Its the most "wet" and has a good "look". But the orvis one I prob wear the most as its lighter and it uses a zipper, so its just easier to grab and go. The filson I just got, its a crewman but its more stiff and heavyweight than the rest, its a dry wax which is nice. The Lands end is insulated so warmer, I actually wear that a lot in the winter, the waxed canvas has held up nice vs a standard poly or nylon outer. I'm getting into sherpa lined jackets recently, looking at bespoke post, which is sort of emerging as a more affordable version of huckberry.

Great review Carl. But you picked the wrong Filson to review. I love my Tin Cloth Short Lined Cruiser Jacket. It's not perfect but the fit is great, it's comfy, and looks great. However, I wish it had a nice wool liner for real cold weather wear. I've been looking at the Freenote jackets, specifically the Riders Jacket Heavy Waxed Canvas Wool. Have you reviewed this one or do you have any plans to review it? Does anybody here own one? It's a beautiful jacket and I'm wondering how long they take to break in, how they fit, and how warm they really are. Love your channel Carl; please keep giving us great content.
