This hack does work…. The press temperature and press time is what I use. The butcher paper is not necessary because it doesn’t bleed through your garment. Lastly, what went wrong was you cured the film paper for way too long. It only needs to cure for about a minute at max, 30-45 seconds is ideal. You actually can skip the cure process altogether and it’ll still work. Curing it too long will cause for the ink to completely dry. This will cause for the press to try and transfer for ink that’s already been dried, causing for it to give the distressed look and not all the ink to come off the film onto the garment. So try the hack again, only this time don’t cure it more than a minute or not at all. Hope this helps someone…❤

I started doing this and you're baking it to long. What I've done is just heating (baking) till the powder melts a bit, usually 2 min give or take. I press at 385 for 45 seconds and then I peel fast in one motion once cool, not letting it get completely cold. Hope this helps and y'all do more videos on this :)

It's not glue, its TPU powder, which stands for Thermoplastic Polyurethane, its literally a plastic. TPU is also used for phone cases & 3D printing. Just a flexible stretchable plastic that melts into the shirt. You can 3D print a design with TPU filament & heatpress it onto a shirt. 3DLifeOn KZbin channel did this years ago.

I tried it just because, something to do besides my plastisol transfers I make. I used a grey shirt and it actually came out nice no distress at all. It looks no difference than plastisol. It's feels thick like a patch or vinyl. You'll get better results if you use a clamp heat press with heavy pressure. 380f 40sec. I shouldn't take more than a minute or two to cure the powder. When it turns from white back to the ink color it's done remove from heat and press. 👍

The DTF on 100 cotton works fantastic for me. What I notice is y'all love your cricut heat press. I ditched mine as soon as I got it. It just is not a consistent pro quality effect. I got the DTF film and taped it to a sheet of paper. After it printed I put the powder on the sheet like you did. The problem that I noticed was that after you put the powder on the sheet you didn't aggressively snap it to get the majority of the powder off of the sheet. Hold on to each end and then bring hands closer together and then snap twack :). You don't want a lot of excess adhesive. Also there is no way you will get a good result with the cricket hand press. If you have a regular heat press (swing away or drawer slide presses are perfect for this) you put it on the heat press for only a minute or two. When the glue starts to look like faux suede and not sugar granules. Sometime the presses don't have an even heat distribution so you can always rotate it halfway thru. I love it and have never had it stick like your. I think you probably just had so much powder it got on of the carrier sheet when you pressed it down turning your DTF into a heat transfer patch. I first bought the DTF sheets that ended up being 70 cents a sheet. Since then I have found a supplier at half that cost but my next move is to get the 300 foot rolls at $130 if I remember correctly. If you like I could send you the information. I don't want to overstep and put here in case you don't want it. The only downside is I don't have a sublimation printer with white ink. I bought the SG1000 specifically because of the ink waste tray. I didn't want clogged lines etc. That's my next work around I'll be exploring. I love you guys and your channel and really enjoy your videos...but I seriously hope that as far as you have come that you have an actual heat press :). Love your channel...Sue

Yes I saw that one also. I think because it was so quickly popular and everyone trying the first time - I'm sure she heat sets the powder now. This changes everything for us. We don't have to invest the $20,000 into a machine that takes up way to much room - way to much upkeep, way to slow. I can sub the film - coat and press in about 5 minutes. I just need to figure out a white ink hack and I'm all set. I was going to screen print...fail. I might be overthinking this anyway. Faded neutrals and tan browns are hot now anyway... 😀

@@blancagonzales2444 yes I saw that also. It would never have enough confetti. It was a good start though. I was typing a comment before she even got her next thought out about screen printing the white on the shirt first then Finishing with the design. I never do well with the screen printing. I always get ghosting or worse. Also I’ve watched a ton of screen printing videos and they say the white is the hardest to get right because of needing almost 2 passes. She got me thinking though. I could cut the easy subli mask as a cut file then get either those little foam rollers for trim work when you paint a room or a foam brush and apply it the screen printing white ink to the heat resistant backing Let it dry under the heat press and when dry apply it like HTV. I’ll try that Monday. I’m going to be pulling an all nighter. I have 100 Libbey 16 oz glass cans to make for tomorrow. As my backup plan. How much was the printer you bought. If you could let me know. I have the sawgrass 1000 and love it now that I found ink for it at $26 for the 4 colors. They got the new chip with it to so that the printer doesn’t know the difference. I just thought of something else to. There’s a print shop in Florida that does 15 cent transfers. I could order the entire sheet white and then cut it with my silhouette. Thinking about that now. I’m going to try that first. I really don’t want another sublimation printer at this time. I’ll be able to get 100 sheets and I can hang sheet it myself. I’ll have to see about that Monday. If you think about it. If your happy with the production of your other printer. You could make you new one have more than 1 white cartridge. That what the other shops are doing also. Then you don’t need to make two passes. Let me know how it goes…Sue

I think you might have over cooked it. 15 minutes seems long. I saw another video speak to this recently. I have tried this several times (385* for 40 sec, cool peel) and it worked great. You do have to do a second press after the peel to make the "plastic" feel go away. I had one not work, and I think it's because I over cooked the powder, too.

No matter what settings for print, copy paper attached, or anything else I tried, keep getting roller marks. I have tried different DTF films and still get roller marks. Besides this channel, watched every other videos and used their techniques and still get roller marks. Have no issues with any of the printers using standard sublimation paper, only for the DTF film. Any suggestions or your thoughts for my situation?
@elizabethmx
@elizabethmx 3 ай бұрын
Did you resolve your situation with the rollers? I have the same problem
@LouRao
@LouRao 3 ай бұрын
@@elizabethmx Hi. Yes & No. Never worked for me and allow me to explain. Let’s start with why "no." As a long-time crafter with 22+ years in IT, I can testify with certainty that it will not work. I'm not an expert in crafting, but I definitely understand technology. There is no way ANY converted EcoTank printer will process DTF films 100% reliably; it is hit and miss. Why? After further investigation into the type of rollers most general printers use, they are not designed for sublimation inks and DTF film sheets. The infrastructure of print rollers captures the paper from left, center, and right. This means that while general printer ink is designed to dry before touching the rollers, sublimation inks do not; they are still wet and leave portions of inks on the rollers then causing roller marks on the DTF film. Some folks will remove the rollers altogether to make a non-sublimation printer work as a hack. In theory, this should work, but it doesn’t. Where this fails is with the print heads and ink tubes. Non-sublimation EcoTank print heads are not designed for sublimation inks and, in due time, will ruin the printhead or clog the tubes. As a KZbin Content Creator myself, I would never feature this video or from any other content creator on my channel. When I do product reviews, they normally go through testing before any recommendation, and I never follow the hype. If this were me sharing a hack, converting an EcoTank printer into sublimation to do DTF prints, I would have at least done a 6-month trial before recommending it, regardless of the social media hype. Also, besides experiencing roller mark issues before investigating, I also had two Epson printers converted to sublimation many months ago, and the heads went bad. Therefore, here is the solution or "yes" to my answer: DON’T convert any printers into sublimation; buy one made for it. I know most folks don’t want to hear the truth, but the only way to do DTF prints is to have a DTF printer that is made and designed for DTF films. A DTF and Sublimation print rollers, print heads, and tubing are totally different from those of a general printer. Note, a sublimation printer like Epson SureColor F170 or Sawgrass that is strictly made just for sublimation and NOT DTF is a better choice than trying to convert one. Then there are DTF printers that are designed for just DTF Film and nothing else, which is a better choice than trying to convert a printer to print on DTF film. Yes, the cost for a DTF printer may seem expensive, but in the long run, it’s not. It will pay for itself in two ways: increased sales and being free of hassles from a converted hack printers. If you just want to do non-DTF prints but only sublimation, the Epson SureColor F170 or any of the Sawgrass models will fit the budget for anyone instead of doing a hack. The bottom line is to buy the right tools that are meant for the projects. Don’t do what I did and what thousands of small businesses did: listen to these hypes. There are times when certain tools can be used for something else, but for printers, that isn't the case. I ended up throwing out the hack printer and purchase Epson SureColor F170. As for DTF printing? For me, it’s best to outsource since I don’t print in large quantities. If I did, buying a DTF printer is the smart choice. I hope my long answer helps. 😎

DTF stands for Direct To Film. This uses a special printer with special inks. However, I believe that you can get the same results using any printer that accepts the GhostWhite Toner cartridges. DTF printers will only work if using the PET "polyester transfer" film, then apply the glue, and cure it, then apply it to the garment.

Stop using the circuit press. That doesn’t work. You need a clam press or swing away. Works every time. I tried the cricket press with the same results. Then used my clam press and it worked great.

What do you guys do when you get pizza wheels on the image? I get this when using the dtf film … I just ordered another brand to see if it was the film. I don’t get pizza wheels when using ASub paper tho. Any suggestions??

Me too! I am going to try a couple different films and see if that helps. I've tried every print settings under the sun with no luck.

First of all you need decent DTF film. There are 100s of different ones now and most of them are trash for this type of application. Your one is not even peeling properly. Secondly, decrease the distance between the heat press and the transfer. Cure for 3 minutes at 150C. Press for 15 seconds at 150C with medium to high pressure. Peel when completely cold if you are using cold peel film. Finally, if you have a compatible printer model, print using rip software. Then you will be able to apply a bit more ink. More ink = more liquid for the powder to stick to = thicker/smoother adhesive layer which will peel better and survive 50 wash cycles. If your colours turn out dull, press again at a higher temperature to active the sublimation ink. Sublimation ink activates at a higher temperature, but at the same time, 220C is way too high for DTF film. So you end up with this sticky mess that can't be peeled.

I am so confused as to what the hack was. What did you do differently from the first sample you did to the last? TIA 🙂

DTF can be used on cotton shirts vs sublimation is for polyester shirts. The hack was the use of sublimation with the DTF powder on a cotton shirt.

Have you try black powder? What's the difference? Can we do on dark fabric? Love your videos

Due to the sublimation has no White ink, the color would be pale and unseen with black fabric.

And I've heard it needs a lot of pressure with a heat press. Doesn't work as well with Cricut Press. Not enough pressure.

@@LorraineCastellon-Rowe there are a lot of things that you need an actual heat press for and I mean there are so many things I mean yes it's cute if you're making something simple or want to do some HTV or some light sublimation but it's not going to be as clear as it could be with the heat press for sure

I think you better use sublimation primer on cotton fabric. There is no need to powder. Color and detail just as good or better when using sublimation primer.
