You can get laminate to stick to tile by taking 280 or 300 grit sandpaper and scuffing the surface of the tile first.

@@jodealode I used white high heat spray paint. The kind you use for painting fireplaces and grills. You can find this at Lowes or Home Depot.

Great tutorial thank you for this! I see on another video you used another material to sublimate onto clear acrylic. Would this method work on clear acrylic as well? Also I'm wondering if you originally cut that wood substrate out with your Glowforge could you more quickly cut that extra laminate away on the edges (and the center hole again) by putting it back in the laser cutter and use a jig?

I'm not 100% sure Carla, but I think it would be worth a try! I hear about people pressing HTV onto painted wood, but I'm not sure if the higher temperature would cause issues, or if any moisture from the paint would cause bubbles in the laminate. Definitely test a small piece first, but let me know how it turns out if you think of it! Thanks for sharing your idea! ---Becky

Great question and I'm just not sure. I actually think the heat to laser through the wood would cause the laminate to shrink away from the edges, and I'm not completely sure if laminate can be safely cut with a laser. I think I would consult an expert to make sure it is safe. Hope this helps! ---Becky

That's a great question! I found out when I tried pressing a piece of wood that wasn't dry, but it was a wood slice that was probably intended for decorative purposes. I would say any wood you are going to buy from a craft store would be dry, but fresh lumber (or DIY slices) will need drying. I wish I could offer more guidance! Hope this helps! ---Becky

Hey Staphany! I personally have not, but this method should work for the wood. I know of a company that sells sublimation acrylic and can cut clipboard shapes, but I'm not sure about sublimating acrylic that large because the heat makes it so flexible. Hope this helps! ---Becky

This is such a great idea! I love it! Do you have to cover the entire piece of wood or only where you're putting the sublimation pattern? For instance could you use a large 18 inch round and only laminate the center or bottom for a design there? Did you say this could be done on canvas as well? What about on painted wood (maybe the colors would show up better on white wood rather then natural)? Thank you again for a great video!

Great questions! You do not have to cover the entire piece of wood, but you will be able to see where the laminate sheet stops if you do not cover the entire front. You can do this on canvas, we have a video on that, I'll link it below. I have not tried painted wood but think the idea has merit. When doing sublimation, you need a sublimation printer such as an Eco. You also need sublimation ink and sublimation paper. You can’t use regular inject ink or printer paper.

I have heard that if you paint your wood white before you laminate, your colors will be brighter when you sub. I have not tried it yet, but I may.
