If you have a young fruit tree that needs to be pruned, then the best thing to do is cut it back with the future shape in mind. This way you'll get more growth and can create a nice structure for the future. Older fruit trees need much less intense pruning, but still need some maintenance every summer. The video will explain what needs to be done for happy, productive fruit trees!

Nice job getting that tree back in balance. Looks like you took half the tree off to do it and the tree thanks you. Now I know what fruit wood looks like on my peach tree. 😀

Thanks Terri! My dad saw what I did to his tree and gave his approval too, so that's good! 😂

I’ve been watching lots of videos trying to learn how to care for some new fruit trees I just planted (and more I just ordered lol). I have no experience, and have been feeling really overwhelmed with how to prune without knowing what to expect adult trees to look like. This video is really helpful to see the new tree and the older tree and the differences. Thank you so much!

I wish you would have shown close-ups of the cuts you made. I've seen videos that show the cuts should be made at an angle depending on which direction you want to direct the future growth. Or, is that not important and were you just making flat cuts above the bud?

+Emily BH hi Emily! A couple things: the angle of the cut doesn't influence the direction of growth, but the terminal/top bid you leave does. Future growth comes from the top remaining bud on the branch, so have that bud on the side of the branch you want to cause new growth. Convention wisdom on cuts is to angle the cuts so water doesn't pool, but in practice this doesn't make a huge difference. Good to do, but probably not a big deal if you dont

Thank you for another great video! Maybe you could help with this question, I have many young trees that I have pruned as time goes on and I understand that part, but I have one massive citrus tree on the property that has been there for 30 years or so and has never been pruned . Can you shock the tree if you prune it too hard by cutting off big limbs or will the tree not mind? Thank you for any insight you make share!

General rule of thumb is not removing more than 25-30% of the canopy in a single year. Removing a big branch at one time should be just fine, so long as it isn't half the tree.
