Can we talk about the use of the rear arm in combination with your compressing and extending of the body. I notice when you are pumping you swing your rear arm up and slightly behind as you extend and then over the top and forward/down as you transition to compression, in almost a front crawl type motion. I've found this is quite an effective body dynamic for pumping on the surf skate as its quite an easy que for the rest of your body to follow, plus it also helps to make you keep your shoulders squarer to where you are going rather than trailing your rear shoulder behind. Its something I'm going to focus on more in the surf.

Good simple information that explains something I've been trying to work on! thanks!. my problem is I'm natural foot on my surfboard and Goofy on my Skate and snowboard. I've got about 20 years experience on them all and out of the three would be surfing 80% of my boarding time. Also my favourite surfer is Goofy footer Craig Anderson. Hi Noel, whats going on with your weight distribution between front and back feet when you pump? I notice when come out of compression your back heel lifts. What happens in the moments before this, especially in the double pump bottom turn, are you driving off your back foot inside rail? (ie what weight distribution split between from front and back foot during extension at about 4:27 to 4:28 in this video). Also for viewers watching on chrome there is an extension tool called" mirror tube". Awesome for us goofy's to watch you surf right foot forward. Yew from Oz!

Every wave is different, You usually pump for speed in these 2 scenarios. 1. You need to get around a section. 2. You need to generate speed. If you don't have to do either of those then its time to start attacking the lip.

Hey Noel thanks so much for these. I picked up a carver recently and have been really enjoying applying you and Nick Carroll’s surf training tips on it. After around 10 days of being pretty into it and going 10 mins at a time a few times a day my lower back gave out pretty fantastically. Is there a likely culprit in form that you’ve noticed leads to lower back issues with the carver training?
@surfnshowreviews77774 жыл бұрын
Sebastian Royer Never heard of anyone having this problem. Maybe going 10 minutes a day is too much for your body at first. I think going easy at first is best.... remember your using new muscles and to work them hard can cause soreness, cramping, tightness. I do light stretching before surfing or Surfskating so I don’t get sore or hurt too. Sorry to hear about your back.... get better quickly.
@xabierxabi21994 жыл бұрын
Very nice explanation. When you are getting speed in frontside wave, do you go rail to rail? 4:25 minute. Because you do it with your skate after and in a footage of a flat sección, but you say that yo set your inside rail, in a non flat wave and it looks that you don’t go rail to rail, only compression and extension
@surfnshowreviews77774 жыл бұрын
Xabier xabi Mostly the inside rail surfing on a wave on your front side down the line. When you skate on a flat street it’s rail to rail. If you skate a cement bank it’s more like surfing a wave with mostly your inside rail and not your heel side rail on your front side. Skating a bank... when you go down your board is in a neutral state as gravity pulls you down.

Stoked to see you do a technique series Noel, been a fan of your board reviews and I can easily see you excelling in this area too! I have a question though, how do you get to the bottom of the wave from that athletic compression stance @4:40? Does that stance alone get you to the bottom or is there more to it such as subtle weight adjustments with toes, heels and rails? (Like a mini weight shift to outside rail?) Basically, what areas of the shortboard are you engaging in the wave to get it to go to the bottom from the high line once you're in that stance?

Amazing content top notch advice bro, although I fail to see how those carver boards help with surfing, looks like a fun toy but surely if you cant get in the ocean due to being landlocked etc your better off spending your time keeping your fitness up by surf specific swim training in a pool ie head up front crawl so when you get back in the ocean at least your still somewhat surf fit?
@surfnshowreviews77774 жыл бұрын
Piers Woodford If you haven’t tried a Carver then you need too. Very similar movements in compressing and extending and it’s an excellent tool to sharpen your surfing. I agree with swimming and staying fit but swimming and other sports don’t help your surfing technique much.

You don't have to use one to apply what I am showing you in each tutorial... just do it when you go surfing. Subscribing to our Patreon for $5.00 is the only way it makes sense for my brother Aarron and I to give of our time and talents to make each episode. We both have full time jobs and family's so doing these extra tutorials on top of our Surfboard reviews takes a ton of our time..... not to mention answering all of the questions from our community. Noel. I don't have a ton of time or the climate to get out on a board regularly. I don't want to spend allot of $$ upfront and just want to see if I can make it work with what I got. I have an old deck kicking around - it's about 40 inches. Do you think that would work if I just picked up the carver trucks and put them on that deck?
@surfnshowreviews77774 жыл бұрын
Allan Maybe...
@patrickdykmans73844 жыл бұрын
I have a 34 inch sector 9 and a carver, i bought the trucks for the sector and the main thing i would tell you is the clearance between the wheels and deck. You need a bunch of spacers? between the truck and deck otherwise the wheel is going to bite it when you carve. Those extra inches might be an issue for how tight a turn you can pull, but imo its worth it to get the feeling. I for one can vouch for the impact it can have on your surfing, it opens your eyes on what you have to do on a wave at any given moment. It just clicks
@surfnshowreviews77774 жыл бұрын
@@patrickdykmans7384 I agree... it will be about the spacers needed to keep the trucks from rubbing. I believe you get the spacers needed to use the Carver C7 or CX Trucks when you buy them from Carver.
@patrickdykmans73844 жыл бұрын
@@surfnshowreviews7777 yes, you do get a couple, but for that long of a board you need to really dig those rails so a couple more will come handy. The ones you get Allan are a bit rubbery, and special size to the truck, so you might not be able to use the ones you have on your board, but you could improvise. Good luck!

Stretch out your stance on your Carver. When your paddling on your surfboard make a effort to be way forward on your board so when you pop up you will be more centered or forward.

Not exactly... those seem to be a bit more front footed and the concept is a little different. Get yourself a Carver.... and let's get it going ASAP.

Pushing too hard off the surf skate I had the same issue too especially if you have weaker knees try to ease into it and work on hip and ankle mobility
