I love that you said it’s a learning process- every time I cast and watch and talk to other anglers I learn. Fish on or skunked it is the always a good day when fishing❤️.

Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup kzbin.infoUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.

I like your honesty, and your conclusion, locals can teach you a lot about their area, you learn something new every time you go out fishing. Your guys fishing is different than us here in south Africa but the basic principals are always the same. Keep on fishing

That Old G. Loomis is the as the one I bought judging by the wiggle in yours it's a MF Action 10' 6". Mine is a spinning HF Action 10' 6" Gary loomis from mid 2000s. I married it to a Shimano THUNNUS 1600f Bait Runner. I have never broken either one or had too send for repairs. 14 years old I fish northern California coast line rocks, Rocky outcrops and 40ft bluffs.

There is a casting technique called "Hatteras Cast" on conventional/baitcasting reel and it was originated from there. I found using the "off the ground cast" is much easier to send out your payload but fishing a crowded place like that "Hatteras Cast" might be better.

Nice vid! Love throwing heavers. That 15 footer you got prolly wouldnt cast the weight (usually 8-10oz out there) needed to sit and stay on the ground. Most likely didnt really cross anyone's line bc of how close you were casting to shore. I'd say start off with a 12' that is rated an minimal, up to 10 oz. Most cases, it is 8 and bait. Most of mine are rated 6-12 oz for the drum rods. Get a bigger hook 9/10 J. Get a decent conventional reel (usually size 15 for drum). Shorten up that leader to the hook. You'll be bombing em out there in no time! Should have put a small chunk of that bluefish on. Drum love em. Always a good tactic to use what is presently in the water. Tight lines man.

Yep, same thing happened to me long ago, could never understand how these competition club anglers can stand on the same stretch of beach as I would, but they would just pull out one after the other. So one evening I met one of these guys, and he mentioned a couple of interesting things, besides the obvious things like weather, tides, bait and rigs for your target fish etc, he talked about the little things, such as using fluorocarbon for the hook leader line, braid for longer casting, and one thing he stressed above all : Make sure your hooks are super sharp, or buy chemically sharpened hooks.

I'll be going to Avon, NC in two weeks for two weeks. I have probably spent over a year of my life there and have never fished the point. Your chances of catching a large drum are much better there than other places on the island but I like to relax when I fish and that wouldn't be possible surrounded by so many people.

Yea i was in va beacj last year. If you ever go to the pier there theres a short loud guy named frank you cant miss him. Great dude and hes one of those that catched big fish after big fish, at the end of the pier we had a good 10 rods out and like you said just the same 4 people were cstchimg while everyone else including myself was watching. I even bought an open face penn and a 12 ft rod but never managed to land me a fish on that rod at all even with help from the local friends i made, location location location, the bait spot placement is everything

Great vid. My nephew fishes at Cape point a lot. He has more than one Hatteras Heaver. That is what you need. I go at least once a year to the OBX but have never fished at Cape Point because there are so many people. I've caught a lot of those big drum but I catch them in Pamlico Sound and Neuse river and Pamlico river from a boat. If you don't have a boat there are guides that can really put you on them. July, August, September and even October if it doesnt turn cold too early. Trouble is, you have to throw them back if they are over 27 inches. The slot is 18 to 27. You can keep one. They are excellent table fare. I like to blacken them. Google it. All of your ideas and reasoning were pretty much right. You just need a Hatteras Heaver.

Nice video man, ive been there . Its not easy at the point. There are only certain holes the fish are in. You just have to get in position to grab tge spot after tge guy fishing there gets one. But thats not easy for tge new guy. Its fun to be there. I never got a big red, but did get a 36" blue. Got into the reds in another beach further south in the fall a few years ago.. it was a good week.

I have a Seigler SM bait caster an open cage not a level wind that I use here in Florida a 12ft rod 20lb mono 40lb mono shock leader I can cast much further with this set up than spinning outfits plus a baitcaster gives you much more battle control over the brutes. It takes practice using this type of reel but once you do it will be your favorite. You can start with a level wind but it limits your distance cast and if a Tarpon is on the level wind can not keep up with the spooling and many fish are lost due to backlash .
