Dry bags. Dry bags will compress your gear thus enabling you to fit stuff in your rucksack easily and will keep your gear dry as an added bonus.

Im doing this but I really don't like alot of different foods. I feel like I won't be able to have dinner there becuase I will just not know if I'd rather stave or eat something horrible
@BetterThanADaydream8 жыл бұрын
+LUCKS SEEN Yeah it's tricky if your not a human dustbin like myself. Pasta? Nearly impossible to mess it up. Even if you just eat it on its own, boring af but at least your getting some calories. What will you eat? maybe we can come up with something, cause I can't recommend starving!

+BetterThanADaydream I really don't like pasta XD I'm sure I'll be able to figure out something soon enough, plus I have until October till I go on the camping part

@BetterThanADaydream7 жыл бұрын
Don't feel worried that you haven't done bronze, as long as you think about what you pack and how you look after yourself when you out there you shouldn't have and big problems. It's good to see you doing your research, It'll pay off. Hope you enjoy, and learn from, the experience.

I've recently competed my bronze DofE and wish I had found this sooner as it's very helpful and I totally agree with everything that's mentioned in the video (a specially that it's hard to fit everything in your bag 😄) I'm now moving on to silver and so glad I've got this video to share with my friends who are joining me as they're new to DofE 😊

I'm doing my DofE bronze practice in April, any tips I don't know what kind of clothes to take cause Scottish April weather is über un predictable it could be raining snowing sunny gale force winds and hail all in 2 hours
@BetterThanADaydream8 жыл бұрын
+Devon B Breathable one of the main things, clothes designed for sports/ walking will keep you comfortable, especialy if your wearing the same stuff for 2 days in a row (which is no bad thing, and it saves space and weight in your pack). A good set of waterproofs is exremley important, as you've said Scottish weather is very changeable, keep dry or risk getting cold. Remember to layer up, go for a few thinner jumpers and a non insulated waterproof top. That gives you lots of control over your body temperature. Oh, and never go north without a wooly hat! Hope that helped, any more questions just give me a shout :)

Porridge Pots are Decent, but they split in my bag, and My everything was covered in porridge oats. Ok for Bronze, but Silver, not so good :)

Hi I'm doing my silver in 2 weeks and because it is October, it will be really cold in the mornings. Do you have any advice on how to stay warm but not take up much space in my bag?
@BetterThanADaydream7 жыл бұрын
Oh good question. Think about each individual layer, so a couple of micro fleeces are probably equivalent in warmth to a big cotton hoodie (which if your really weight savvy you shouldn't take in the first place) and they'll take up half the space. Always try and go for synthetic clothing rather than cotton, it’s way lighter and drys much quicker. I've often used skiing type base layers, which are cheap in somewhere like sports direct, and roll up pretty small. A good warm hat is a life saver, and gloves too, with gloves make sure you have enough dexterity to do things like turn a stove on. Now I know you probably don’t want to break the bank, but if you see a silk sleeping bag line in a sale or something go for it, they lower the comfort temp of your bag by around 5-10 degrees and weigh virtually nothing. Even little things like taking the time to make a hot drink in the mornings or wearing think socks and a hat to bed make a world of difference. Hope that helped, have fun :)

How do you stay a little bit hygienic? After my first day of the silver practice, my face felt so oily and I really needed to wash my face. Wet wipes perhaps?
@jammey60096 жыл бұрын
Swordeye yes wet wipes as a scout leader I have gone almost a week with out a shower and still stayed somewhat clean using wet wipes. Also if you are taking deodorant roll on is alot less risky as it can't accidentally go off in your bag without you noticing. Ask me how I learned that lesson.

Can't find a solution online, how do you waterproof your hiking boots for crossing rivers? Are gaiters still useful when crossing a river stream?
@BetterThanADaydream6 жыл бұрын
Hi. The problem with river crossing in boots is no matter how waterproof the material, there's a great big hole in the top! But just keeping on top of boot maintenance by cleaning and waxing/ treating as appropriate will help. As for gaiters I don't use them, I think you'd need to spend a fair bit of money to get some fully waterproof and well fitting ones to make any sort of difference, Cheap gaiters are more of an annoyance than a benefit. The best thing to do is ask yourself if you really need to cross? Or to try find a better place to cross. A bit of planning ahead will often avoid soggy feet all together.

Are you allowed to bring porridge pots? I thought you had to make it on be trangea
@BetterThanADaydream8 жыл бұрын
+Megan Thomas Yep, there is nothing in the guidelines that says you aren't, and they are very convenient. Go for that or sachet 'ready in 2 minutes/ make in a cup' type things, which are much less bulky, but you have to wash your mug after. Same stuff just different packaging. Old-school porridge made in a trangia pan takes forever, and you always get oats burned on the bottom, so I'd sack that right off! :)
@shammayounus97178 жыл бұрын
what would be a good food to bring for lunch? (ik pastas are good for dinner :) )
@BetterThanADaydream8 жыл бұрын
So you can have sandwiches for the first couple of days (any longer and they get manky) after that id switch to substantial granola/cereal bars or breakfast bars (tend to be higher in calories), peanut butter ect. I found having a bag of trail mix/ nuts/ dried fruit in my pocket to graze from worked well. You don't really want to crack open the trangia at lunch time :P

This may sound kinda dumb but I’m doing my bronze duke of Edinburgh in summer and was wondering about toilets and whether or not I would need to go to ‘go’ in the open? Any answers would be deeply appreciated!
@BetterThanADaydream6 жыл бұрын
Hiya. Depend where you are doing the exped, but at bronze you probably wont be a million miles from somewhere with facilities. I don't remember needing to break out the trowel on bronze or silver as the campsites we were staying at had loos. Your route may even go through a small village with a public loo, which would definitely be worth making use of. Make sure you go in the morning and evening and you should be fine. Just don't get to hung up on it, everybody poops!

i'm about to do my silver practice in two days and may be on my period during then, is there any way i can deal with that?
@BetterThanADaydream8 жыл бұрын
+eLLE LMizgeek Ok so definitely use tampons instead of pads (or both, just in case you can't change as often as you'd like). Because of that it's worth using more absorbent tamps than you might use normally. Be sure to use both at night to avoid leaks in your sleeping bag, just make sure you change first thing in the morning. One of the main problems is keeping hygienic, although at silver you'll probs be staying at camp sites with toilets which makes things a lot easier (be glad you're not wild camping!). Shower if you can, but bring wet wipes just in case the site doesn't have them/ their broken or manky af. Make keeping clean and comfortable a priority. It's also especially important to keep well hydrated when your on, and make sure you pack some pain killers for if you get cramps. Hope that helped, let me know if you have any more problems. Good luck :)

...you think it would be a good idea to bring a trangia stove?
@BetterThanADaydream8 жыл бұрын
+grampa liam Sure, trangias' are standard kit for most DofE programs. I only used my own gas stove once I got to Gold. Trangias' are practically indestructible, slow but reliably slow (ie they don't just not work). As long you split it and the other group kit between everyone, they aren't a bother. Honestly, I think using a trangia on DofE is a right of passage! Hope you have fun :)

@BetterThanADaydream8 жыл бұрын
I really can't recommend trainers, that would pretty much guarantee wet feet and some sort of ankle injury. Try your best to track a pair of boots down or get some cheap.
