Dorms are expensive and can be annoying. BUT I found it convenient because I could focus on my classes and not have to worry about getting enough work hours to pay rent. i just have too much anxiety around not being able to pay rent. But I was able to work a campus job and make a little money while still feeling secure. A single room dorm would be nice tho lol FYI, my college prefers RA's don't have a job. So they can be more focused on the residents and their "pay" is free housing. Just something to think about if you want spending money! :)

living in a college dorm prepared me for working on a cruise ship. the conditions are basically the same. the lack of personal space, the noisy roommates, the nasty roommates, the horrible food, the policy on drugs and alcohol and the fact that the people you need to interact with at school or work are the same people you live with.

I’m an RA at Wright State University and I can attest to EVERY SINGLE MESSAGE! Sounds like OSU is massively more expensive than WSU, but I think living on campus at least one year is so essential to forming relationships with people and really being rooted with campus culture. It’s the last time you’ll be around a population of people who are the same age all there for the same goal! As for horror stories, my grossest story is this one from moving out. I checked out a bunch of my residents and unfortunately had to charge several of them because their rooms weren’t cleaned and needed repairs. One resident in particular had a room that was definitely being used as a sex den (two twin beds shoved together 🧐). He left a few frozen meals in the fridge, so I gave them to him and we completed the check-out. Hours later when I left to go to an end of the year RA Party, I used my building’s stairwell to get to campus, and you won’t believe what I found. That frozen meal splattered E V E R Y W H E R E. It was all over the walls, two sets of stairs, and the carpet. All because he was pissed that I had to charge him. I didn’t have to clean it up, but it was definitely a sour end to my first year as an RA.
@MyDriftingDesk5 жыл бұрын

The whole "no cars for freshmen" rule is insane to me. Maybe bigger colleges have more on campus job opportunities but my college doesn't have many and they don't pay well. This girl is paying for her own education and I work 20hrs a week on top of 12 credit hours, homework, and rehearsal because I'm a theatre major.

I feel you!! Osu is just so big and we accept so many freshman that if every freshman was allowed to buy a parking pass there would be no spots for any other class lol. We do have TONS of on campus jobs so that’s good.
@MyDriftingDesk5 жыл бұрын
Idk either!! but there has to be something, I agree!
@dabombdiggity465 жыл бұрын
Living on campus can be expensive, but I totally recommend doing it, especially and at least your first semester because dorming (and joining clubs!) is crucial to getting to know people! I saw both the good and bad of living on campus in my freshman year: terrible suitemates who never cleaned up after themselves and talked badly about me, but I also met some of my best friends in my building through hall events and getting involved in our resident hall association (the student government for students that live on campus). Living on campus is also great because you get a chance to acclimate to a whole new culture and the new reality of a college workload without thinking about getting up in the morning and driving to school AND the best part is being able to go back to your dorm and take a breather in between classes! Another tip to my incoming freshman: take advantage of your meal plan!! Most if not all schools require a meal plan if you live in regular dorms and especially for freshmen/first semester transfers so that being said get creative w the options they give you, take Tupperware and bring food back to your room, ask about alternative food options they might have! My school kitchens does the buffet style rotation of set items off a menu on a regular, but they also make smaller amounts of certain foods like grilled chicken, rice, and steamed vegetables every day for students w dietary restrictions and you all should check to see if your school offers something similar (perfect for picky eaters)
@MyDriftingDesk5 жыл бұрын

Some of this depends on your school. Last year (my first year which for me was freshman/sophomore) I was in a single and shared a bathroom with the room next to me, suite style. This year I'm in an on campus apartment which is technically a quad (4 bedroom, two bathroom, a shared kitchen, and a living room) but there are only two of us living here. There were 3 but one person only stayed the first semester (and then the two of us left both signed waivers to stay on campus after the school kicked everyone else out... 2020 is insane). Next year, me and three friends are going to share a quad apartment on campus, so that should be good. Also, at my school everyone is allowed to have a car as long as they buy a parking pass. And nobody is required to live on campus, it's actually mostly a commuter school though many do choose to live here. On the other hand, I didn't make friends with anyone in my dorm last year. There is a guy I became friends with prior to the start of school last year (an advanced math camp thing the week before school) who happened to live on my floor, but otherwise nope, all of my friends are either from math camp before school started or from welcome week events.

This really depends on where you go to school, the only thing I could really relate to was crappy school food. I got to pick my roommate and even when they do pair people up it isn't random (they use a survey to match people up), our room was pretty big, we were really good about sharing space and respecting each other's schedules (in terms of being noisy at night or early in the morning), neither my roommate nor I drink but it is pretty easy to have alcohol in the dorms because RAs only check our rooms during breaks and they aren't allowed to go inside our closets which all have doors, housing doesn't cost too much at my school but we don't really have the option to live off campus (they make exceptions but it's rare), parking is only $85 per semester, and everyone on my campus can take part in all activities whether they live on campus or not (I go to a pretty small school). I really love dorm life but it sounds like we've had vastly different experiences.
@MyDriftingDesk5 жыл бұрын
But essentially the survey still makes it random. You don’t know them prior to moving in or getting assigned. You definitely got lucky with your roommates and RA’s. But you’re right, everywhere is different!!

I am going to be a sophomore in college and my biggest thing is to not overlook community colleges. For my freshman year, I was able to get a single room in a pod-style dorm super close to my classes since the campus is smaller. Everything is cheaper, parking passes ($90 per year), housing ($5,000 triple, $6,000 double $7,000 single) per semester. Opportunities are much easier to get for amazing things on campus like jobs and office hours and smaller classes. But the best part is that if you want a 4-year degree if you start at a community college and transfer you will get the same degree as everyone else but you saved so much money the first two years.

I’ve been taking classes all summer, but still, I can’t wait to go back to college lol. Summer school is just not the same. My campus is kind of small, and I lived on the edge of the campus, so I had to work for socialization while there was nothing going on during the weekends. This fall I’ll be in a more central part of campus and we have a new student body president, so hopefully we will have a better social and weekend presence this fall. Plus everything outside of class will be closer to me this time. (I was close to class but far away from social stuff last year)

Summer is definitely different than fall campus life!!!! I hope you have so much fun in central campus!!!!

Do you have any tips for commuter freshman? I really didn't want a randomly assigned roommate and so I am living at home. I'm a little bit concerned about getting involved and making friends, though. So, do you have tips for commuter freshman at OSU? Thanks!!
@MyDriftingDesk5 жыл бұрын
SUCH a great question!!! Not many people talk about this!! I would definitely love to make a video about some tips for commuters and what to expect commuting!!!
@listay15 жыл бұрын
How are you commuting? By bus, train, or public transport? I commuted from two suburbs over, via bus every day at one stage. I ended up moving closer to campus to save travel costs / walked to university.
@bekahkrull20215 жыл бұрын
I have a car so I'll be driving to campus
@MyDriftingDesk5 жыл бұрын
Travel costs can be pricey for sure!!

i’d suggest just staying on campus. unless it’s a money issue, staying on campus is great as a freshman and running the risk of getting a bad roommate isn’t a great reason to stay at home. it’s a good time for exposure

I have a question you probably dont know or won’t answer, but is there ANYWHERE to use a stove or oven on campus? You know for people who can cook?

at OSU there are full kitchens in every* dorm in the lobby area that you can use.

I know, and it’s not like the first two years of college are hard it’s just a slight bit of more workload. My one professor told me that university is so much harder like there’s so much more to remember. So I’m nervous.

Things definitely start to pick up your junior and senior year, so it may be a bit harder or a larger workload, but you seem like the kind of person that can handle it and will do great once you get to college!

@MyDriftingDesk4 жыл бұрын
If you go to college with a high school friend yall can request each other on some school's housing applications! so there is a possibility to get to room with someone you already know, however most people "go random" which just means they aren't already requesting anyone so they will be paired with someone!

My college has on campus suite style apartments for upperclassment so you still get to pay with loans and its not paid monthly rent-style and you get to be living on campus and have all that, but you arent required to be on a meal plan and you have your own room like an apartment (even though youll still have 3 other suitemates) and the 4 of you share a bathroom and kitchen and everything.
