I was in the US Coast Guard, stationed in Buffalo for 1 summer. If a boat in the river gets into the rapids above the falls it will most likely get hung up in the rocks and not drift all the way to the brink / crest. We rescued a 22 ft boat one night with 5 drunk fishermen, who thought they were going the other way. Their boat was caught in the rocks, and we took them off one at a time with a Canadian Parks Dept jet boat (no propeller). The operators at both dams on the falls also have the ability to open the water intakes full and purge the water thru, to reduce the flow of water over the falls. That is partly why their boat was stuck, the intakes are normally open at night, and the flow of water over the falls is greatly reduced.

I live in Niagara Falls, NY and it’s beautiful. However, people need to realize that the bigger waterfall, The Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side, has less rigid and massive sharp rocks at the bottom whereas Niagara Falls, the US side, is almost 100% impossible to survive due to the massive sharp and rigid rocks at the bottom. More people survived going over the Horseshoe Falls than Niagara Falls! And DUH, there are strong railings to keep you from “slipping” or falling off as long as you have a brain, it’s safe. I would highly suggest visiting both the US and Canadian side and experiencing the Cave of the Winds (only US side) that let’s you take a walk right under Niagara Falls and the Maid of the Mist (both US & Ontario, Canada) where you ride boats right up close and almost under the Horseshoe Falls & Niagara Falls. The natural whirlpool is also phenomenal! You can go over it on a cabled trolley from the Canadian side only and it’s so worth it!

Journey behind the falls is cool too, but the best thing to do there is the helicopter rides.

Waterfalls are beautiful but also deadly. In Idaho we have Shoshone Falls (212 feet high), the "Niagara of the West". And let's not forget Multnomah Falls in Oregon, at 620 feet high.

I've often wondered about the likelihood of survival if someone launched themselves over the falls at top speed on a jet ski, but also had some type of miniature hang gliding contraption or suit that would allow them to glide long enough to ensure they cleared the rocks below (FYI, they would let go of the jet ski once they went airborne)

@prairiepucker93923 жыл бұрын
Were you high??? There's nothing there that even remotely makes one want to walk on the water. The first time I visited there a young boy and his sister were in a boat that had problems above the falls and fell into the water. The girl was just barely rescued 20 feet from the lip. The 7-year old boy went over and miraculously survived. The operator of the boat went over and was killed. The whole atmosphere was crazy. The best view is from the Canada side.

If you are in the Niagara River above the falls you better have a good anchor and a working marine radio, and use them long BEFORE you get to the "point of no return"
