I immediately liked it. Most knife-defenses focus on the weapon arm, but that puts you at a great disadvantage! It's much harder to stab you, when you keep moving and when the attacker has to think of protecting himself from incoming attacks, whereas when you wait for the attack you give an easy target and you probably fail at catching the arm and you can do only so many blocks or evasions until you get hit... Someone dazed or at least distracted is much easier to grab, hit, or whatever. Just a few words of warning: 1) small knives are meant to be felt not seen. If you're a small woman and try to keep a junky at bay with a tiny blade, chances are he'll straight up ignores it, even if he impales himself, or punches into the blade! On the other hand, if someone tries to attack you with a small blade, you'll probably won't see it coming! He'll attack you from behind and even if you see his attack, it will most likely look like an empty-handed attack, and when you try to block it, you might get skinned! 2) Many people draw knives not to kill you, but to threaten you, either to rob you or chase you off, scare you, etc. Thus, any hostile action from your side might escalate it into a life-and-death scenario, where there are no real winners. 3) if someone comes at you with a knife, your best chances are likely, to either KO him when he still thinks that you'll be only be thinking on defense, or to run away.

... According to Hick's law the reaction time is the time interval between the presentation of the stimulus and the beginning of the response to it. In layman's terms, when presented with a stimulus, your brain seeks options to engage the stimulus. So, not knowing when and how the knife attack will come, means you will either overestimate the attack, underestimate the attack, or accurately engage the attack. So this give us, roughly, a 33% chance of blocking any assault. If you are engaging a trained knife player, you will get shredded because no knife attack comes in one move. I think this might work for the Sensei against someone untrained, but the best move against a knife assault, if possible is to run. I do think, that empty hand defense, Aikido can greatly benefit the practitioner. I did Aikido for quite sometime and moved to MMA simply because I wanted a broader range of skills.

I agree with the Michael Williamson comment. First: Great channel, great people, realistic fighting moves. These guys are real. I used to be partners in a gun shop in London, The Southern Armoury in the East end. And I used to hang at Elephant's Castle with crazy geezers so, I can tell these guys have been around. I'm an ex-cop from a big American city and have had many real fights, used knives as a cop, am a black belt in Kyokushinkai-kan, was trained by a WWII jiu jitsu instructor and jungle fighter starting as a kid. In a real knife fight, anything can happen and a trained knife person if his wrist is deflected, will immediately circle like a fencer. It also makes a big difference if it is a bowie, a 4" folder or a double edge dagger. I graduated the Koga school course of baton fighting and when I was armed with a regulation baton or blackjack, I don't care who it was, even if they had a knife, they went down and usually had a cracked skull. If they were not close, but needed only a couple giant steps to stab me, I did of course have the convenience of pulling a gun. The few times that situation occured, each offender dropped the knife so fast, like someone pulled it with a string. But please listen: if you have nothing and someone confronts you armed with even a cheap steak knife- Run if you can. Don't try any moves unless you have no way out. Run. No shame in it. It is not a contest and forget knife videos showing expensive knives that pierce car doors- even a 5.00 knife cuts human flesh!

Since watching the video, I have run across other KZbin videos depicting a very scary and uncommon type of knife attack, typical in prisons and such .. nicknamed "the sewing machine". As named, it involves the attacker rapidly thrusting their knife back and forth at their victim repeatedly, akin to a sewing machine needle being used to sew something. I did see various defenses to such an attack presented in KZbin videos, including at least one using traditional Aikido techniques (which, IMHO, I believe might prove to not be effective/practical on the street). Would be curious to see what our Aikidoflow boys come up with to defend against such an attack. Based on those videos out there and the past A.F. videos on knife attacks, I would envision it involving using the "x-block" with the forearms to stop the initial thrust, then grabbing the attacker's wrist forcibly with both hands to immobilize it, possibly a well-placed knee blow, and then finally finishing with the execution of a joint lock/throwing technique of one type or another to (break the arm? wrist?) and disarm the attacker. ? KEEP GROWING, AIKIDOFLOWERS!

You will be surprised how much red is on the T-shirt. Defending against a knife is seriously difficult and requires lots of training. Watching one KZbin video is not going to help in a real live situation.

What do you do if he has a knife and knows what to do with it? I quote the Great Master Richard Pryor ""Guy comes at you with a knife you run. If you can. If you can't run. *FLY!!!* But yeah, if that's not an option there's no such thing as "too much harm."

Oh. By the way. Don’t do like in the movie. Take out and just point. Take out and pull the trigger. Pull twice. Not once.

Please. Do not try this at street. Better run away if you have only this to defend yourself. Knife attack is much more unpredictable and its proven that those " blocks " dont work on the street - because knife attack is usualy frenzy hack and slash- not like this training dummy with left hand in pocket while attacking..

I was really lucky once. A guy who often used a knife had lunged at me with a knife. I saw it coming so I was able to turn sideways. The knife and his arm went passed me. The opportunity I saw was to grab his wrist with my right hand, my left hand onto his elbow and pushed him down to the ground by his elbow. At first he wouldn't let go of the knife.

What to do if i was attacked by a knife? Get a better knife holder for my kitchen. The knife must've fallen down off the side in order for the knife itself to of attacked me xD

how do you get the guy to stop the sewing machine attack and switch to something easy to defend?.. when you block that kind of attack in prison it repeats...if you get lucky and catch that cross block you need to grab that hand or push it farther back so you can grab it.I am not talented enough to give away ground like that. Here you can draw you knife back farther away from my hands catching it and controlling it, is not my style.

Can you make a video about how to deal with the Benny from the Bronx types people who will come back with a gun after you rough them up with Aikido with the intent to murder you?
