Everything considered I think the best move I can make is walking away, or better still completely avoid getting into a situation where a fight is likely to take place. So far that strategy has served me well. Position, position, position. In my case that position is 20 miles away from agressive arseholes.

Deception is the key. As Miyamoto Mushashi said, "Do not have a depressed spirit. Do not have an elevated spirit. Do not let the opponent see your spirit." The other thing I notice about Seagal's choreography is that he always beats down the opponent's hands and arms before striking them - and only then does he do some fancy aikido move. In other words, atemi - strikes - are the primary element in his aikido - which is how it's taught in Japan, but not so much in the US, probably due to avoidance of lawsuits in the US which would be unthinkable in Japan. This is why aikido can be effective in a street fight - provided it is trained in that manner and trained against a variety of martial arts and street fight styles.
@alexanderbalekjian16035 жыл бұрын
You're mostly correct. I'd like to add a few words though. Aikido is taught the same way wherever you find it (Aikikai Aikido at least). In Aikikai we "don't have" a lot of striking but our teachers show us the open areas on the opponent so we can always have at the back of our head that there are plenty of areas to hit the attacker while executing a certain technique. What is not often taught is how to start doing a technique in a street fight scenario. But after practising Aikido for at least a few years you'll understand that without hitting the opponent, almost none of the techniques actually work. It's common logic in my opinion. So if you want to be a "complete" martial artist you should practise a lot of different fighting styles, because arts like Aikido are not that modern and weren't originally designed for street fighting.

He was married to Kelly LeBrock who was so gorgeous and sexy and then he had the #1 action film - he was a huge star basically overnight. And his backstory and his persona were all bullshit. He walked around with bodyguards whom he claimed he needed because of all the wet work he’d done for the CIA. Shit like that. But people loved it! Including me, man. I was 18, 19 and thought he was a bad ass. Loved those first 4 films of his, whatever it was. Especially when he had a real director like Andy Davis. Good old times, man.

These comments are the only non b.s. comments I've seen so far. Everyone else is just trying to bash Segal or this video and they have never been in a fight especially the ones saying " we've never seen him in a fight " we haven't seen them either. I do practice it but never use it because I make friends with everyone. People need to understand that unlike movies, when you do take someone down it's not as easy as walking away after that. People have guns, or their families come after you, that's real life. In the movies, you beat up the bad guy it's over. So trying to de-escalate is the way to go.
@zomb4525 жыл бұрын
moubear32 so have you ever taken someone down before? Not someone from your dojo or an untrained drunkard? I don’t think you have (or even have the skills to do so) I say this from first hand sparring experience, I’ve taken many people down that are trained in many different styles and I kind of know how it works and I can tell you almost every aikido takedown is utterly useless in a real fight (besides a few of the throws ripped directly from judo and even those are iffy if you’ve never done them on a resisting training partner) just take some wrestling, jiu jitsu and kickboxing/muay Thai if you actually want to be able to defend yourself against a real attacker don’t be fooled by clowns that tell you you will be able to strike someone 3 times before they even retract their punch (which almost all aikidokas don’t do, they just leave it hanging there while they LET their partner do their incredibly unrealistic attacks) just thought I’d let you know for your own safety, don’t trust movie stars to teach you self defense..

Today I am way older and have always had very fast hands, even among practitioners. Started training my son Matt’s hand speed with a nerf basketball before he was two. Twenty some years later he is one of the fastest on a basketball court. Was doing dream shake at 15.
@christianboddum87835 жыл бұрын
Steven Seagal has talked about an offensive use of Aikido, at the highest level. Normally Aikido is trained and practiced defensively, and it is at the core of Aikido. You have to take control of the situation, and I guess at a high level you surprise opponents by being pro-active so to speak. Now Steven has trained with some of the older Aikido people, and probably knows a lot about the older hard style that the students of O'sensei had to experience. He has been public about that some of the older instructors that had to travel outside Japan, were specially trained and knew a lot of "dirty" techniques in order to persuade other martial artist that were sceptical and challenged them, so they could handle these situations. Also if you study Budo seriously, you also study strategy, and I see a lot of that at play in his movies. Yes they are movies, but it still comes across as a part of his Aikido. FWIW

It's kinda cool when people learn from movies and find actual function in a cool scene for real life. It's not only possible, movies rub off on anyone who is REALLY into them. You know? Not people who give like 5 or 6 or 7 stars for every action movie they see, as this 'critic' movie goer, but like people who actually REALLY get into movies. So. This European dude kinda embarrassed me because he's really big into Seagal, and I've kinda been in denial about how much I loved his movies, before. Even Siskel and Ebert liked 'Above the Law' when it came out in like 1988. It's been too easy to do the 'pile on' thing with Seagal, since though. So. This is a cool clip. It shows that a skilled fighter knows of 'safe zones' before and perhaps during a fight, although the best 'safe zone' is being where trouble makers are not.

When you strike someone and it catches them off guard, you have a way higher probability of knocking them out. So deception can be very dangerous! Bruce Lee would feign attacks a lot to expose your guard and hit you with a strike you don't see coming. I tried it, I threw a jab to see their guard and he threw both arms up to block his face. So, on the next strike I threw the same jab while simultaneously drawing back a haymaker and his diaphragm was wide open. I hit him in the stomach and he went down to the ground and that was with 15 oz gloves.
