One downside is there's very little concealment. However, setting up base at the edge of the biome gives you all the advantages with little downside.

Very true. However, if you get lucky, the large rocks can spawn in such a way to give your base great cover if you decide to build next to them. Actually at 2:47 in the video you can see a base tucked into the rock which I was experimenting with.

Great video Jfarr! In addition to this, crops need a heater during the night if you want to keep the overall to 100% as it gets cold during the night. Having no heater will result in a slower growth compared to heated plants. A heater will need to be put on a blocker to only be triggered at night.

Yeah, that seems to be the case. Unfortunately when testing, the UI didn't seem to update the temperature value when I switched between night and day. Therefore, it appeared the biome always provided 100% temperature.

Great video as always. Even though I have about 200 hours of played time, I usually only get to workbench lvl 2 as a solo player. Your videos really make things make this more manageable, hahah! Have you thought about making a base building guide specifically for fishing/underwater gameplay in mind. I looked at your older base building guides, but I feel they might be a bit outdated. At night the temperature drop will affect your planters. If you are building a farm base in the dessert, I would suggest setting up heaters that turn on at night and shut off during the day.

That's the best approach. I didn't notice this due to the temperature value on the UI not updating when I switched the server time in console. Might have taken a while for it to refresh which I didn't account for.

agree with comments re heaters. Also desert is a great place to put your first bag as if you die respawns can always get more cloth from cactus to keep leapfrogging across the map

That's actually a great idea with the sleeping bags. Also yeah, it appears we will need heaters during the nights. When testing, I was quickly toggling the server time from the console and likely didn't give the temperature value on the UI time to refresh.

When testing, my crops remained at 100% temp even at night. It definitely could have been bugged for me and the UI wasn't updating. I will need to check this out further as it would make sense for it to drop temp at night.

It's a great biome for us. Only rocks are missing on our island but luckily we have stone quarry next to us, I love it there. Thanks for the tips!

Note -- the water from collectors is worse gain compared to mountain, snow and forest. So if you plan to build a farm, a source of water is 100% needed.

It's hard to say and depends on your playstyle. For most people, it's best to live next to one of these biomes so you can get quick access to the monuments or resources without having to deal with the negatives of the environment. Alternatively, if you prefer to distance yourself from the majority of the server population, building in these environments could be a good option as players cannot spawn there.

You forgot to mention the desert has literally zero stone node spawns. Major draw back as you can run for 3 straight map squares and see nothing in the distance. Huge L on Rusts part quite honestly.
