I must say this is the video I needed to watch. I very very rarely comment on videos but this was the tonic my brain needed. I am what most people would call a liberal but I find it incredibly tiring listening to people who hold intractable views of any kind. I sometimes feel like should draw my line in the sand and start digging my trench like all these other people but something stops me. Your video eloquently described why I struggle to go full bore with any opinion of mine. I feel like the vast majority of people are like this. I’ve definitely noticed the algorithm trying to turn my feed into an echo chamber. Every other short or suggestion I got was just enforcing opinions I already had, but it got so prevalent that my feed nearly turned into an endless stream of curated clips from pseudo intellectual podcasters “dunking” on their guests-who usually embarrassingly lack the education required to engage in truly thought provoking conversations. It’s nothing but theater; it’s setting pins up and knocking them down. Over and over again, with not a chance of getting my own beliefs and opinions put to the challenge. I feel lucky to have noticed it, but I find it more than a little unsettling to know that there are countless people who will blindly dive into their echo chambers without a single thought of self reflection. Social media is seriously the most insidious enabler there is.

I will say that there are two kinds of 'centrist'. The first is as you're portraying. Where you spend time digesting information and thinking critically sbout everything. The second is when you simply go "I should be in the middle of these two extremes, as that is sensible". This type is what many folks criticise.

I've always called it "active" vs. "passive" centrism. An active centrist is usually a skeptic (epistemologically). Whereas a passive centrist, ironically, often affirms his or her position much more confidently with far less intellectual rigor or genuine investigation.

The problem is trying to make anything a polarity without recognizing the context within which it exists. Adding up a lot of things and taking the average in some sense, and saying you're in the middle, is totally different than being in the middle of all things. Critical thinkers can have very polarized opinions, they just consider the other side as well. Being in the middle isn't a virtue, it's just a way to start a conversation with someone who disagrees

@@MattAngiono Agreed. The issue I have with this train of thinking is effectively the constant pull in one direction for the sake of compromise. Ex. We should have the death penalty vs not. "Well both sides are right, so we should have just a couple death penalty offenses. Compromise between two extremes." 5 years later: "Well we should expand death penalty offenses a bit" or "We should leave things as a compromise."

As someone who is dealing with the misfortune of several loved ones becoming hyper-conservatives who are heavily involved in the culture war and overuse so many terms and/or don’t know what they mean, thank you (I tend to lean liberal/progressive on social issues while opposing more extreme aspects of it, but I stay out of the culture war). It just pisses me off how it got ahold of those I love That’s not to say I have dealt with genuinely “woke” types because I certainly have (though my “woke” criteria is significantly stricter than that of most others I hear irl), and they combined with bad influences taking advantage of the situation actually caused me to be some hyper-conservative culture war nut for a part of last year and I regret it In addition I’m bisexual but am distant from the community (I’d say since 2020) though I also can’t stand those people who talk loudly about “(traditional) family values” I’ve seen it all, been there, done that, regretted it, and came out a better person. Things will get worse especially with an election coming up, but this video served as help as I am slowly going insane due to the culture war being so influential irl (and had since come close to having several breakdowns from culture war stuff and dogmatism and toxicity in general). Once again thank you. I would go in depth about my points but don’t want to write a 5 page essay about this. Lol Edit: and it has gotten worse. And worse. And it will only get worse until at least 2025, but most likely until later than that. But I keep coming back to this video as it is helpful and provides a sliver of hope (That said though I do disagree with you on the part about tech execs to a sizable degree but otherwise good video)

For a long time, they've been saying that everything in philosophy has already been said, and I increasingly feel that this is true... you know how it goes: new clothes for old ideas. Nevertheless, I'm glad to see you striving to move away from simplistic dichotomies of the culture war. Perhaps a complementary approach could be our own stance towards social media technologies. @@evieeevee I don't want to because he didn't want to (I assume or he would have said it), but let's just say that there is the idea on "the left" (or liberals) that whatever a member of a marginalized community says about themselves has to automatically be considered true because of their "lived experience". An example would be if a gay person said that they were "born this way", and straight people had to agree based on that person's perspective that homosexuality is innate. I've seen huge wars over "born this way" vs. "this is my choice, and I'm damn proud of it!" With sexuality, this was someone of an open discussion, a tense discussion, but one wasn't automatically "wrong" for having one or the other opinion, and neither was equated with bigotry. With other, newer categories of identity, that's no longer possible.

I think we blame too much on algorithms, you curate your own algorithm. The algorithm is just doing what it’s meant to do, show you more stuff you like or interact with. If you only seek out one type of content, that’s on you. You can easily break the algorithm too, by just seeking out the other side or interacting with it, but that takes curiosity. Coincidentally this is why it’s funny when people talk about doing their research, people just google their point of view and grab first study that confirms it. Classes should be taught on this and hopefully people realize it’s more about them and their habits, then evil tech company. If you find yourself in arguments online often, it’s helpful to think “what will I get out of this,” usually it’s nothing but competition.

It's true that habits are at play here, but many people also downplay the addictive mechanisms behind these algorithms, especially on younger people who have not developed the kind of responsible habits that would keep algorithmic influence at bay. There is a book called 'Stolen Focus' by Johann Harri that has several chapters going into detail about the addictive mechanisms built into social media, from interviews with people involved in designing them. At Stanford University there is a place called the Persuasive Technologies Lab, where students learn how to design technology that could influence ones behaviour without realizing. Largely the study was based off of psychological study by B.F Skinner, who found that animals could have their behaviour changed by means of 'reinforcement'; that is, certain rewards for certain behaviours. Social media companies, in order to make money, require 'engagement', engagement is the total time spent using social media and interacting with content. To increase engagement, various reinforcements are provided, such as likes and hearts, when you post; generally a pleasurable feeling that your 'numbers' are rising. The same rush people get when they pull a Content posted is also a reinforcement; it is not simply that you are reccommended content you are likely to engage with, as well as the endless choice, and slot-machine like sense of possibility that 'this next video will be a great one'-- but the likelihood that you will consume said content is also engineered to be as frictionless as possible; letting you preview the video, putting other videos on autoplay, suggesting the same video insistently, such that eventually curiosity gets the better of you and you click;-- not to mention ways of mitigating this are rather non-obvious; many people are actually quite social media illiterate, when it comes to fine-tuning their reccomendations; I had to tell my friends about the three dots at the side of the video that you can use if you want a channel to stop being reccomended.

But you can still choose the strategy you want to support and I think the most successfull strategy for those who have the most interesst in keeping the status quo is, plotting one marginalized group against another even more marginalized group. And as long as they are successfull in doing that either nothing will change, (or more likely) things will get even way more worse for the smaller one of both groups.

I feel like there's still an issue for those who have supposedly transcended the culture wars with their metamodern zeticism or whatever. A big part of what drew me into all of this was the desire to understand the world, society, people, and orientate towards how I can live my life to better the project of humanity, but everything is just so staggeringly complex, and I have what I think of as a totally niche perspective that no-one cares to understand or appreciate. Plus, I could definitely be a better person to the people in my life, but I'm depressed, disconnected, and "living my values" requires more than I have in the tank on any given day and it all just feels pointless given that there is little in the way of a hint of the path towards doing anything other than pissing in the wind.

you don't necessarily have to tolerate, but try to understand where they're coming from-- and that doesn't mean 'understand where they're coming from' by hearing someone on your side badly explain their beliefs to you, but rather, try and hear them out directly and read some of their favoured literature.

Me desperately watching this for a solution at 2 AM. God, I hate this need to be informed and have a thought out stance on every topic. I can't focus half a day on my work without going down a rabbit hole. Worst of all, my nights are ruined with debates on KZbin that realistically have no effect on my immediate reality. Fuck this, I wish I was stupid and didn't care. Also, fuck these algorithms, one video and I am now in the alt-right pipeline. It's like KZbin is waiting for suck in. I wonder if there's a similar left pipeline, I have never seen it. Maybe cause I usually watch lefty videos, IDK.

Caring is a choice. Even if you do care about stuff, beyond voting there's not much for the everyman to do so you don't actually need to engage beyond that point.

@@Crispman_777 I wish I could reason with my impulses that easily. I think mindfulness is the way to combat this. I also adopted a core stance, I am generally for anything that will let any individual live their life without unreasonable negativity. Other stuff, I can debate myself when absolutely necessary.

you probably don't think there's an alt-left pipeline because the Overton Window currently favors the left. A video that makes Antifa out as stand up guys and Marxism as the way of the future is just normal, but anything more right-wing than Joe Rogan or Ben Shapiro (who are already called 'The Intellectual Dark Web'), is alt-right territory.

I became a socialist, which got me involved in my actual community, and now I avoid all social media except KZbin... Leads me to further believe the "profit at all human costs" ideology of capitalism is definitely bad. If capitalism is the root of that mindset, then capitalism has outlived its use to us as a species.

Could this approach be a cure for nihilism, or maybe the cause of it? I thought about what a friend said to me once, to "really think about what I believe," and I realized that I don't actually believe in anything. I'm not even an edgy-nihilist, I'm just too tired to care anymore.
