Thanks for all these tips Adam! It helped me pass my ten-pound brick dive just now! For anyone looking for extra tips as well, I found this to be mostly a mental challenge. I was fully capable of physically doing it, but was freaked by having to dive 3+ metres or so. Once you can visualise yourself doing it and get over that fear, it's a breeze, and the brick really isn't that bad to carry up once you've gotten a feel for it, so I definitely also recommend trying it out before your evaluation if you can. I was also more comfortable propping the brick up on my non-dominant shoulder rather than my chest, because I felt that it gave me extra control and freedom to use my other hand to tread water (we're recommended to do eggbeater in Canada, it also might be a little easier to stay above water with that than flutter kick), so try that if you feel the brick on your chest is really causing you to sink.

Hi Adam, I failed on the brick dive portion, however, the Red Cross instructor required us to hold the brick over our heads, sadly I ended up sinking down as I tried to flutter kick. Any pointers would be helpful since they won’t let us put the brick to our chest and flutter kick back.
@LifeofAdam
@LifeofAdam Жыл бұрын
If u have to hold it over your head, i would try breastroke kick or egg beater. bec the force of each kick will help keep u above the water, versus flutters is more for speed and side ways force. breastroke frog kick will help with ur head being above water

@LifeofAdam

When u grab it on the bottom of the pool,do a slight push off and flutter/brestroke kick up to the surface. Then when u are swimming on your back, keep ur chest out, hold the brick between ur neck and sternum and switch up ur kicks to keep u above. Brestroke will keep u higher each time u “glide” and flutters will move u straight ahead faster

Hi Adam, Thanks for you videos! I'm 43 and taking the course next weekend. I'm confident in my skills, but I'm worried about being fast enough on the brick dive. Any advice?
@LifeofAdam
@LifeofAdam Жыл бұрын
brick dive is timed at 1 min 40 seconds. That is plenty of time. I wouldn't overthink it. Go at a comfortable pace. retrieve and swim back to the start with smooth movements and proper technique. You will pass guaranteed. You could swim half way to the brick front crawl to get off to a quicker start if u are worried about time. But then i recommend u switch to breastroke and look above water to find the brick. Swim above it and align yourself with it. You should be all set!

Hi Adam! I’m a good swimmer and passed the 300 yard swim and the 2 minute treading without arms. I can pick up the brick but when I get on my back I sink towards the middle to end. Any tips on keeping yourself afloat? I heard it was my hips not being too high but I also did backstroke kick so maybe that was it? Thanks

hi! i was having the same problem and i lowkey still do but here’s my advice: take deep breaths and focus on keeping your abs tight and face as straight as possible. go back and forth between faster flutter kicks and slow backstroke of breaststroke kicks every like five to six kicks. just really reallyyyt focus on keeping that butt as close to the surface as possible. if you’re stiff as a board and breathing deeply you’ll be good! doesn’t mean it’s easy lol but it makes it easiER.
@briggleybroggley5859
@briggleybroggley5859 Жыл бұрын
it gets tiring when you do the fast flutter kicks bc your quads will cryyy in pain my friend. so yeah by going back and forth between them it makes it easier to muscle through it with having that count in your head! i hope this helps even a little!

I have been a lifeguard trainer for 35 years and still going strong in my 50s. It's a great job! I recommend if you do not already have these in your arsenal, try to learn either a whip (frog) kick, scissor, or (my personal favorite) the rotary kick (egg beater) Good luck, I hope you do great! 👍🏽

I would experiment with the flutter, breaststroke and bicycle kicks and sew which one gives u the most support. Also make sure u hold the brick over ur chest (not too high up near ur neck or low by your stomach). I have a feeling the breastroke kick may be the best for u

Hey Adam, I’m practicing at my ymca and I can dive to get the brick just fine but kicking back up is slow and I sink when I get to the top and get into position to take the brick back any tips?
@LifeofAdam
@LifeofAdam 11 ай бұрын
Light push off the bottom to help ur momentum. If u sink, stick out ur chest more when u are on your back and use both hands and hold the brick between ur neck and sternum. Play around between kicks and find the one that keeps u and brick above the most. U can always switch back and forth between any kicks want. The push off the bottom will help the weight transfer and will get u to that backfloat position to kick. Let me know how that works

hey adam i have my test coming up in a few weeks, and i practice the brick dive test with the lifeguard at my local ymca, i didnt understand how to float with it and was pretty much motorboat kicking and sinking, but watching multiple videos made me realize how off my form is seeing how everyone keeps there legs underwater , when i go back in monday, do you think it will be much easier with the bycicle kick?

Yes it will be! It allows U to get into a rhythm that’s sustainable. Keeps ur head above water and it won’t get u tired like flutter kciks

Hi Adam I have my very first lifeguard training class April 13th I’m extremely nervous there going to throw the brick into the deepest part of the pool so most likely 12 feet I’m very worried about how I’m going to get down there without feeling like I’m suffocating and start to panic any advice? I’m not worried about how heavy it is or how to get back up just mostly getting down that far.
@LifeofAdam
@LifeofAdam 10 ай бұрын
blow air out of your nose to sink faster, and once u are down there u can puhs off the bottom once u have the brick, that will limit your time in the deep part of the pool to keep u calm. i would recommend practcing beforehand to get used ot the feeling. its not comfortable going that deep for most, but its do-able

U have to experiment with what kicks work for you. And the reason I say kicks is because u can swap back and forth between whatever u want. I like breastroke kick to help me get vertical more so the brick is out of the water, flutter kicks to move faster horizontally, and eggbeater to support the brick (feels like a bike kick) practice at a pool and borrow a brick from them, and hold it over ur chest wherever if feels the most comfortable
