This is what i need in my life. Sick of losing spinners to sunken trees in the lake. I'll be in there with a metal detector late summer when the water gets low, claim some money back! But this is what is needed for now

Thanks for this! I mostly like to catch and release. Rooster tails seem to always be the hot lure, but I have killed more fish trying to get a swallowed rooster tail out than I can count. I never have that problem with single hook lures, and plan to start swapping them out asap!

I had no idea what it was either until I started getting into steelhead fishing. it basically is the exact hook you'd use on a bass spinnerbait for a trailer hook also.

Ended the day wanting to use a bigger lure for bigger fish and only had a treble hook blue fox, caught a massive fish, he broke off and I know for a fact he was massacred...felt horrible, stopped fishing lol. I need to swap out for single sidewashes and will be happy to catch some big boys!

That's a good idea to use singles, but I really would suggest another hook choice. First, the shape. Why not use specially designed for spinners and spoons, like Owner S-31 or S-61? They have a big eye it which split ring goes much better than this, and are curved in a different way themselves. To keep things less bulky, personally, I use split rings #1 of #2 on bigger Foxes.

Very helpful, thank you ... i'm planning to try this so I can put a small gulp minnow (scented plastic) on the single point hook behind the blue fox spinner. I've caught trout & salmon with spinners and with gulp minnows individually ... wondering how the two combined will fare with flash/sound/vibration/scent/soft body all combined in one sexy trout-catching package. Too much at once? Maybe. We'll see!

where is the barrel swivel so they dont twist the lure out of their mouth while fighting. Lure to splitring, splitring to barrel swivel, barrel swivel to siwash. I do this to all of my salmon & steelhead spinners & spoons. Spoons get a splitring & barrel swivel in front as well. As to barrel swivel/splitring being to bulky - its not - most ppl use oversized splitrings, barrel swivels & hk lengths. hooklength - order shorter siwash. Choose the barrel swivel thats 10 - 20 lb rating above line you use (this is a lot smaller than most ppl choose by eye). with splitring you may need to go bigger than lb test rating you need so you can feed it onto spoon. Just use smallest splitring big enough so spoon or spinner moves freely this will more than surpass your line rating. Good subject for a video I just swapped out all my spinners & spoons & reordered new splitrings & barrel swivels (Spro are the best I think).

I tie a snap swivel to the line then attach lures to that. It's a time saver when using spinners.

if say using a size 1 mepps aglia, a size 6 siwash will work great. a size 2 aglia, a size 6 or 4 hook works great. a size 3, 4 or 2 hook works well. a size 0 aglia? I'd likely stick to a size 6 hook but an 8 would work as well. Hope this helps understand the hook sizing. I mostly use Mustad 3366a sprout or the classis 3407 O'Shaughnessy hooks as they have large eyes, aren't too long nor too short..'Just right" Cheers!

@@bullyakker Good sizing info, thanks. Do you think there is any advantage to using a Mustad hook with an offset point?
@bullyakker
@bullyakker Жыл бұрын
@@thomascooper6679 I forgot to mention I bend the eye backwards a bit as they tend to stay right behind the lure in a more 'tuned' manner than when running a straight hook which will wobble back and forth and may miss half of the strikes (from trout). I haven't found the perfect hook for me yet but this works well and I bend them back with 2 pliers just below the eye. I loved the octopus hooks also but finding large eye-holes and small hooks at a price I like made me start bending my own like when I used to tie certain flies.
@bullyakker
@bullyakker Жыл бұрын
@@thomascooper6679 What I started out doing was finding a large eyed hook that was about the same size or slightly smaller than the treble hook and went from there. I primarily fish for trout and small salmon in the smaller rivers. I've tried different lengths and found that the bend was a big key as well as the split-ring size. If it "looks similar to the treble set up" it's likely going to work and it has. In all honesty, we're being nit picky as an hook stuck to the back of a spinner will work. IMHO a split ring and bent back eye of similar size to the treble works best here in New England and worked amazingly well in Idaho also. Cheers!

@bullyakker
@bullyakker Жыл бұрын
Some hooks have an 'open eye' which is large and as Joel showed, can be crimped on. You can attach them direct and they will work. (bend the eye back about 15*) I use split rings as it seems to be better but in all truth, it's not a big difference and mostly a preference.

Sometimes a large single can make the whole spinner spin, rather than just the blade. Thats not a good action, and it twists line. (I dont like using swivel for spinners). But sometimes they run fine with single.

Thanks for posting. However, why use a split ring, if the Siwash hook has a gap in it. Just put the hook on the factory loop and crimp the gap. To use hooks with closed "eye', a spilt ring is needed. There must be a reason for the factory to provide that size of hook. Perhaps to make the weight of both hooks the same.
