SW FL flats fisherman. Switched to inline 2/0. Tired of tearing up/blinding fish. Safer for me too. My hookup rate increased, surprisingly.

One of my first times striped bass fishing in an estuary after dark during the Spring Run, I landed a fish and attempted to grab the fish in the mouth with my hand so I could remove the treble hooks from the fish's mouth. I was using a big rapala lure with three treble hooks. The fish shook, and I got hooked in the thumb, while the fish was still attached to the other treble hook. Didn't have a head lamp at that time, so had to pull the hook out of my thumb and then the fish, while holding a flashlight in my mouth. Didn't have pliers either. Needless to say, I learned a few things that night. Won't make that mistake again! I was able to keep fishing that night, and the fish swam off, but my blood was all over my clothes and the rod and reel.

Excellent breakdown, thanks Dave. I wish there were an easy way to determine hook size, such as a manufacturer recommendation on the package, etc. I guess there’s too many nuances to make that dependable. I’ve been switching lures to single hooks, and the only way through this that I could find, was to buy an array of sizes, and compare, and contrast. Over time, I’m developing my own list, to suit the lures that I use.

Amazon has great deals on inline hooks if you shop. I get more hookups and greater retention with single hooks on Snook, Reds, and Trout, SW FL.

Unless someone is desperate to land fish or fishing for meat and know that everything they hook will go in the box, I don't see any reason for trebles to be necessary. Inhaling one or both trebles is dangerous for the fish (and likely lethal) and for the fisherman as well. Not good for conservation. Not good flopping around a deck. Inline hooks are the way.

I use daredevils a lot, and I have found that for some reason I failed a hook about half the fish that hit my lure. Once they’re hooked, they stay hooked, so much so that sometimes you kill them, taking them off the hook with single hooks on a daredevil, I hook up with a lot more fish.

I swapped all my lures to single hooks about 40 years ago, the damage to any fish is now very limited and I hardly ever get a hook in myself.

I enjoy watching your vids. Lots of good info. Where you out of Dave? Maybe we can link up sometime. I typically fish Boston up thru Newburyport, Lowell. Merrimack . Boat, surf & freshwater

We the fisherman need to call out the lure makers to start putting inlines on all new lures, the time of the treble hook needs to come to an end.

If I am snagging for mulet I am using a treble only. Other than that using a treble, I will use inline. You keep your line tight you minimize your risk of a fish throwing your hook, plusv the damage is minimized.

If you use a landing net, you will LOVE single hooks. No tangled hammock. Needle nose pliers make dehooking easy. Just grab hook and turn.

Yep I was reaching for the hook, and the fish flapped, the hook came out, and since the rod was bent, and my hand was in near proximity the kinetic energy sent the hook into the tip of my finger...it did not feel good, thankfully I had crimped the barbs on all my flies and lures. if the coffee or cold water doesn't wake you up...that sure will....lol

I truly think that treble hooks are the biggest scam the fishing industry ever had I’ve never met a single person who likes treble hooks they just deal with them cause it’s what comes on almost all lures but I’ve never met anyone who was like “oh yeah I love treble hooks they are so easy to deal with” I think more anglers need to be vocal to the industry for them to make lures with singles installed and even barbless options
@davedeefishing3 ай бұрын
Agree, even micro barbed hooks would be fine too.

Do the inline singles swim weedless...fish a fairly grassy area and get frustrated having to pull the grass off the treble everytime....
@davedeefishing8 ай бұрын
This set up doesn't totally mitigate weeds clumping up on your hook, just makes it less likely. I've only used singles in saltwater not in freshwater weedy situations.

If you enjoy foul hooking or jagging fish, use trebles. If you want genuine hook ups use singles. If you are into catch and release, there is no excuse for using trebles. I use singles and my hook up rate is not negatively impacted, probably the opposite in fact. But my 'harm caused to the fish' rate is much lower than those using trebles.

What type of fish is that in your pic? Looks like the sea bream I've caught out near California
@wellhookedWA16 күн бұрын
@@davedeefishing Hi mate, it's a Black Bream. Here in Western Australia, they live in the rivers and estuaries. They are a relative of the sea bream that you're referring to. We also have a fish here called Tarwhine which are essentially sea bream, very sliver in appearance.

you have to get a larger size of single inline

Worked ok. I only used it for a total for an hour last year and caught a few. I'm going to try it again this year with the single hooks.

Omg. I had a rig with a 2oz sinker and a single hook fly back at me at mach1 after a smallmouth shook loose and the sinker hit me on the side of the head and the hook stuck in the lobe of my right ear. Can't imagine a treble with a fish on it. I think I was like 8 years old when this happened.
