Cullen is a LEGEND! He did a clinic with my team a few years ago and he was such a good speaker and incredibly kind. Being comfortable with the uncomfortable is a big thing I've noticed a lot of swimmers have trouble with, when they feel uncomfortable or more tired doing something different, a lot of times they'll just stop. Thanks for the awesome video! 🏊♂

throwing the arm forward by your core and not by your shoulder muscles is a revelation to me. ive never heard or considered that. neither my swim coach has ever mentioned that (to be fair, i had only 2 lessons with him so far). i will definately try that.

Wow! What fantastic instruction. He’s got great analogies and timing. His focus points are brilliant. Swing the arms. Reach as far as you can. Now I know what to practice in the pool today! Thanks 😊

Great insights! But is this technique of swimming only relevant to 50m/100m sprints, or should one try to swim even long distances using this technique? Using the big muscles of the chest, back, and core/hip also consumes a lot of energy, compared to using one's shoulders to lift one's arm and recover with a very high elbow. So one wonders if this would be an ideal technique for swimming longer distances.

From reading the comments so far, the 'throw and grab' recovery gets the most attention - unsurprisingly, because many of us are taught 'high elbow', 'elbow-led', 'finger drag' etc etc. The 'throw' flies in the face of all this! But I can see the logic, your centre (hips and core) initiate the rotation and your arm just goes with it. Doubt I'll ever want to do that straight a recovery, but will try that drill on my next pool visit.

Tried this today in my workout. Good results (even if it was a little disorientating). Questions: 1) does this eliminate EVF? 2) is a modified version of this stroke style recommended for backstroke?

Would this be helpful for a long distance swimmer? Edit: another question here would the throwing arm thing work if you do a 400m, 800m, or the 1500m
@andresmullin49789 күн бұрын
I have the same question. I would think this only applies to short sprints. I hope so. I don't see myself doing this for an 800m

I’m guessing he’s teaching for speed rather than distance…but I’m happy to be wrong. Can’t wait to try that though and loved the bit where the S shaped pull is consigned to history.

Naturally. Jones was a 50m specialist, and his focus was, is, and likely will always be on the most explosive swimming within a very limited time. I doubt that the group in the video (Fares and perhaps a couple others excluded) aims at that. Much of his ideas don't really apply to any type of endurance swimming. However, some lessons are universally valuable such as focusing on a single point at a time, on technique, doing things right rather than checking the box, and so on. The drills are great as well - kicking on the side is probably one of the best ever, as it contributes to many different aspects - body position, kick, breathing etc. Straight arms and overreaching, otoh, are sprint specifics. To this day distance swimmers swim in a somewhat "Thorpian" manner simply because it allows to conserve energy.

Well the comment about catch up style not being good practice I do not agree with. Can't remember, but some reason like "practice like you swim". This would eliminate just about every drill there is.
@Mark-sh2ki15 күн бұрын
This video leaves out what happens after the "throw" and the catch, during the pull phase. If you continue the windmill style of this throw underwater instead of folding the wrist and forearm to face the end of the pool for the pull, I've been taught that you are pushing down on the water during the first part of the pull phase, deflecting your forward movement upward.
@richardtrass15 күн бұрын
Yes. I’d love to hear about the underwater pull push phase after the throw recovery he recommends
@albundy0612 күн бұрын
Short and simple. When you do this you don't push the hand forward slightly under the surface like hip driven freestyle. The arm enters with fingers down, way out in front and just goes straight to the catch to pull again. That's what sprinters do. You can of course mix it up and do it in different distances, leave it at the surface a little and then set the normal catch etc. Check out Leah Smith's stroke as an example. Also remember Cullen was a 50 freestyler. The 100 was going long for him. Some people take more of the 50 stroke and bring that up to 100. And some bring more of let's say traditional stroke and bring it down to the 100. Like Pan and David P as examples. Dressel is the other way.... Speaking of Dressel. Watch his stroke when he's swimming the 200 free vs the 100 and the 50.

He is great, a nice guy, and back in time top. No doubt. But rules of physics never changes, and long arm levers are never has been advantageable, opposite. Yes some still win races in this style. This will change after and after. His teaching, well, isnt real time analytically controlled, and so it is 2024 far away from acceptable in way of "best method available" - and he is informed 2023 about VITS, he should now it could be done better in 2024. He may not like it, he may reject it. I don't know. I don't want to criticize, I want to be kind, want to enlighten and inform, to wake people up and if possible lead into new era, especially people who are role models and heroes.
