This is eye-opening to me as well, as someone who typically has been playing very "controlled" tennis. I have just recently figured out how much better the result is when I let go more. I would say that for me the mental note is to swing faster, not harder, since I have to stay loose and relaxed as well. Harder can translate to tensing up a bit. (I'm thinking faster, and breathe out as swing)

Thank you Ian. I've seen this in many levels, and I do see this in me too. Invaluable information. Cheers! M

It's interesting that the moment she was told to 'hit hard' her footwork to get set also became more 'snappy' and that allowed her more time for a full swing. When playing the evaluation points it's almost as if she told herself to get the ball in even of it meant swinging with bare minimum power, slowing down the feet and playing with tentative 'prods'.

Hi Ian, Why don’t you do a series about turning a kid into a pro? You are a good coach. I wish I could come to the US to work with you.

Good discussion! I think SWING FASTER would be the ideal title and you use these words many times in the video and I think it's the best instruction to give a student. A faster swing results in a harder shot. I'm afraid that the word harder can make people tense up and try to muscle the ball too much, and maybe also grip too hard. Buuuuut of course, it's so individual how we understand instructions, so who knows? Anyway... just thinking out loud with basis in my own learning process. What say you? Somewhat unusual video, in a really positive way!

Very nice video. Its a struggle for me to keep the intensity high when points are at stake. Default approach is to revert to the soft/safe option instead of playing harder and freer.

@@IanWestermann But by swinging more faster on the ball is she muscling it? For I rely on the Kinetic Chain of the body to drive the ball around and use the natural swing path of the racquet to drive and spin it so I don't use brushing, instead I use the pronation to drive and spin the ball. So i drive it differently than those who use brushing with the arm to try to drive. Which works but is more tiring to do to keep that high level of intensity up for hours in matches with all the fast swings to try to put all the heavy fast brushing on the ball. And usually tires players out. Because swinging more faster on the ball to brush it more faster is more physically demanding and tiring on the body. And I'm exhausted just thinking about it as I used to do years of this until i made the switch from brushing the ball to driving it with pronation.

Thanks! Last night I read the chapter - “swing like you practice” from your book - looking forward to taking these lessons to court. FYI to all tennis players - Ian’s book is amazing. Just get it. For that small investment you will have lifetime returns! Loving your book. Thanks Ian!

The girl is a top player that was playing around at the beginning to show his point. She was hitting the ball at shoulder level like a top player.

She needs spin on her shots to cross that rubicon. That allows her to let go of her fear because more spin offers more safety and you're not holding back.

Well…I hate say this, but tennis is not that easy. It looks like she can hit really well in the clip. That’s because, hitting with a ball machine, she knows exactly where the ball is going to be at. In real live hitting or real match, ball recognition is a big issue at the low level. Nice and smooth strokes doesn’t help if she doesn’t know how to read the incoming ball flight/speed/spin… to get there on time and adjust her swing/stroke to hit a nice and consistent aggressive shot back… That’s reality
