I met Tom last spring at a Trout Unlimited function and he is one of the nicest people that I've ever met!

Tom is one of the best fly fishing teachers and authors. I started my fly fishing career learning from his books 30+ years ago.

I agree! He is a legend.

i wasn't going to even watch it until I saw it was Tom. edit: oh and same on the books. just turned 41. I remember his books in the mid-late 90s when I was learning. "Reading Trout Streams: The Orvis Guide" I remember getting that in the mid 90s and read it so many times. A bunch of others too. The cover to that one just brought back so many memories though. I think I'm going to buy it.

Thanks a lot. Walked a small river this weekend with this setup. Tied a professor and patridge and orange. Caught 10 small Rainbows and one Brook covering about 3 km in 3 hours.

That was a really good tutorial on swinging wet flies. I've been doing it for years but you've really simplified it. Well done!

Glad it was helpful!

Thanks for the short tutorial. I forgot how much fun I had in the past swinging soft hackles on the Big Thompson in Colorado. Before bead head soft hackles were popular, I used a fabric pin, put a bead on it and tied it to the shank, then tied the fly. The fly rode hook up in the water like a modern jiggy soft hackle. It worked great in a caddis hatch in the evening, and when no hatches occurred.

I'll have to give this method more of a chance and see what happens. My eyes do glaze over when I see that much space in such a beautiful setting. Half the fun (and battle) for me is coming across a fishable area and then seeing if you can even make entry or decent casts to it. Another wonderful video and keep 'em coming.

Nice video Tom 🎣. I tend to use the top tag of line. To attach my second fly , as it stands off better.

With wet flies, Do you use anything to sink the line like a slow sinking leader or split shot?
@zachstarling114 ай бұрын
You shouldn’t have to, I never ever use split shot personally. If you’re fishing fast water and having trouble getting the fly down tie on a weighted fly

do you recommend using a strike indicator with this set up?
@newflyfisher Жыл бұрын
No, you should only use an indicator for nymphing
@Bridgeman-bg4jl Жыл бұрын
There are times with certain presentations that a strike indicator may work. I have used a float to swing a balanced leach into a tight spot on many occasions with great success. Never say with absolute certainty that “no,you should only…” . I recently caught a large landlocked salmon set up under a tree with an undercut bank doing this. This trophy had been safe from standard presentations.
