Ben with ‪@406garage3‬ got some new ‪@YankumRopes‬ synthetic winch line to replace the worn out old steel cable on the back of his rollback tow truck. So I headed over with my antique car to help him get it changed out, and to show you all how simple it really is

I love that you said to support your friends businesses because I’m tired of people asking their friends and family who start a small business for the “friends and family discount“ if you are friends and family, you should pay full price because you want to support them.
@JoeMorrison
@JoeMorrison 5 ай бұрын
Best business practice I have seen is that give the friends and family price to anyone who asks for it. The friends and family price should be 110% or 120% of the regular price. Actual friends and family either know not to ask or don't mind paying the extra.

Personal question refering to Casey's 'last' point when he said he would prefer buying a "sacrificial rope" from harbour freight before accepting discount from a friend on a rope he knew he would "beat up". My opinion until now was i'd rather give my money to a friends business than to a big faceless corporation even if it's not full price (expecting he would still make profit and no loss. What would you prefer.

Casey and Ben, I'm going to reiterate others' comments and thank you for taking the time to discuss the importance of supporting small/local businesses. This is something that I find myself repeating to my Grandkids, their father and quite a few younger folks. The get it today/tomorrow practices and the "sales" that the national chains offer are great and, at times, that may be the only way certain parts are available, but knowing that there are local guys and gals who will more than likely go above and beyond to earn you business and take care of you is a better way of supporting our communities.

I am glad you both talked about paying your friends to do jobs. I have been in business for over 20 years. I believe in supporting local business that my friends work for or own. There are many times we both do a freebie for each other, such as I am sure you helped Ben with the winch line. But doing an actual tow or recovery I am sure there is money exchanged. Smart business is not free! To stay in business a fair deal is what helps both parties. As I always say, a person is either an asset or a liability. I always try to be the asset.

While I agree with supporting your friends and family by paying them when it is their business and livelihood you are getting services from, it ain't always that simple. Such as when needing help you absolutely cannot pay for, the money doesn't exist for you. Sometimes accepting discounted or free (to you that is) help is necessary and unavoidable. Obviously Ben and Casey are in a good financial position, they can easily afford the services they get. I've been on both sides of this sort of thing, been very grateful for help received and very happy the day I could do likewise for someone in need.

Loved Ben and you talking about supporting small business and not be asking friends in businesses (especially small businesses) to give you discounts. I'd like to add to that about tipping when out to dinner, etc. If you can afford to do out to eat you can afford to tip the staff! Sorry to criticize but Ben of 406garage really needs to replace his frayed American flag! "Dirty, ripped, wrinkled or frayed flags should not be used. Also, when flags are damaged, they should be destroyed in a dignified manner."

The idea of tipping was to show appreciation for the service that went above the norm, it should not be a subsidy for wages. If the service is not part of the cost of the meal then the restaurant is at liberty to add a service charge. maybe Ben's flag is a relic of some battle?

@@clivewilliams3661 kind of right. The practice of tipping has its origins in Europe of the Middle Ages (a period which lasted from about 500 to 1,500 A.D.) when the wealthy would give people in lower classes extra money for their services. That was not for service above the norm. It was to help people survive. The national minimum wage for tipped workers is $2.13/hour. (By law, restaurants must pay servers an hourly wage of at least $7.25/hour. That means if you don't earn enough tips to average $7.25/hour during a pay period, the restaurant must increase your hourly wage). December 2020 data says average hourly wage was $29.81 so even more now. But lest say you only make $20 an hour. That's still $17.87 an hour more thant server's $2.13 / hr. It all comes down to you not tipping means your server will not make enough money to live. They depend on your tips to survive! Is this right? Of course not! But not tipping is not the solution! "Relic flags" are supposed to be flown. Ben's 50 star flag is current USA flag, so obviously not a relic.
@clivewilliams3661
@clivewilliams3661 5 ай бұрын
@@LHW-kg9cp Your tipping practice only applies to US. In UK (and Europe) a tip is a gratuity. In UK the minimum wage is £11.44 (~$14.50) per hour and this has to also be set with the relative cost of living so that by comparison with US the actual minimum wage is £12.40 (~$15.60) per hour. Note that these are minimum wages and the actual wage may well be higher. I would feel aggrieved to have to pay the server's top up wages because the restaurant is too cheap to pay them a living wage. I want my gratuity to be seen as a true reflection of the service that I have received so I would rather pay above and beyond the basic, which my tip in UK ought to do. . The other point worth noting is that the server will be serving more than one table per hour so that the US restaurant can easily amortise the cost of a proper wage across several covers meaning only a small hike in the bill that I doubt the customer will notice.

Back when I ran a tow truck, (last in mid 80s) most local companies would roll their old cable up on a car wheel, tie in place with wire. Wire would break, get to job with a ball of cable to sort before use. I took a 13 inch TIRE, put large drain holes in sidewalls and tread. Stuffed cable inside tire with a rag tied to last end in. Walk tire to vehicle needing recovered, attach end with rag, then start back to wrecker. Cable would feed out of tire. When extended, pull service line to there. Run cable thru tire so if cable breaks it can catch some recoil.

I may try that tip to solve common rock crawler suck down winch problem, only with more lateral back and forth to reduce number of total wraps on drum. ..no matter how tight I tension the first wraps on drum, when pulling down front end on climbs (winch use 90% suck-down, the rest recovery) rope sinks (crushes) in to wrap causing problems when un-spooling.

I have a friend that is a welder, he never gives me mates rate, I never ask, and I always pay more than he asks, sometimes double, after all I’m passing it to my customers most of the time anyway! I do this on the basis that he seems to like laying under cars and getting showered in hot bits, I don’t, and he does it faster better and cheaper than I would! Here's a anti-chafing tip : Check periodically with your local city ( typically @ their maintenance dept. ) or Volunteer Fire Dept.s for "retired" hose lengths. They'll probably cut-off the Couplings for liability sake ( since the hose is now deemed "unfit" for pressure ) & cut some 3.5" &/or 5" hoses into 6'-12' Lengths to be typically stowed seperately on your rig. You now have extra TreeSavers &/or Abrasion Skins , feeding your line thru them when needed. ( keep a "snake-line" in them when stored ) If everyone in your club/group carries 1 or 2 , you'll always have PLENTY available when Murphy visits. { hopefully Murph will give ya a year or 2 to acquire them 1st 😉 }

They make a Rope Protection Sleeve for Rock Climbing rope that is bright yellow or red. Adding a section after the first few wraps on the winch drum would let you know when you're about to unwrap your drum. Either that or some Heat-Shrink tube or paint.

Thanks for this video. I have the Badlands 12,000 lb winch with a Steel line and have been wanting to replace it with the synthetic. Now that I've seen this it will be very easy to do. Again thank you very much. Always appreciate what you do and how you explain things.

Look at the Plasma Lock I think its from Red Winch. It is a simple bit of nylon to retain your rope on the winch. Fantastic product almost a must have.

Great job. I did wonder about what you said about not using the last 20 feet because I see most rollbacks having a vehicle pulled all the way up with the winch and the hooks on the rear to use as tie down ?

Fan of the International trucks. My very 1st truck was a 1969 International 2wd pickup.Had that truck for about 6 years untill i purchased my 1st chevy 1978 4wd pickup with snowplow . My favorite truck that i could Never aquire was a 1971 dually International truck. Guy had it half assembled with a cab sitting on top of the bare bed which was originally a dumptruck. Never could talk the guy into a good price which i would have bought it in a heartbeat. Ticks me off to this day that a few years later the guy went to jail & his exwife got rid of it for scrap to pay his bail out of jail. Would have taken very little work to have rebuilt it as a dumptruck or towtruck.

Only thing if you spool up this way. Be sure to stop or the line will come loose. What you could do is to put the first layer on as you did. Then put the end trough the loop on the drum. In this case when you get at that point it will spool up again.
